On Dollar's site the have the following:

There are toll roads within this area that have converted or will be converting to all-electronic tolling or cashless tolling

They are trying to sell the Pass24 system.

My only concern is getting on one of these toll roads without knowing it.
Are there any all-electronic toll roads in Orlando? If so are they marked so you can avoid them?

We are renting through Dollar in Oct...I noticed the same thing. We are flying into Sanford, same as last April. I will say that I didn't run into any all electronic toll booths between Sanford Intl and WDW. But, I do know the push is on to convert the toll booths to all electronic.

We are arriving in Sanford on the AutoTrain. I went to the main website for SunPass and they have two transponders to choose from. One works w/ rental cars ($25) and the other is a single vehicle sticker ($4.99) that I don't think will work well w/ rental vehicles.

Apparently they are both sold at both Publix and CVS which are prevalent throughout the area.

We plan on stopping at either a Publix or CVS before getting on the highway and picking up the $25 transponder. We will have our own vehicle, but don't want to place a sticker on the windsheild forever!

I'm not from the Orlando area, but here in Chicago if you get on the tollway and forget your transponder there is a website you can go to pay tolls that you may have missed. To me I don't seriously know how they can convert everything over to transponder only and not have some cash only lanes. I can see it maybe being exact change lanes with no one manning them, but not to provide a cash lane for those who don't have a transponder especially in a tourist-laden area? That doesn't sound right.

I would get on their website (Florida Highway or the SunPass site) and see if there is more information than what Dollar is giving to you. Dollar may simply be trying to "scare" you into purchasing the transponder. If the website doesn't have anything call their number direct and ask them.

According to the SunPass website if you do not have a transponder in your vehicle, or have a rental as part of the program, ... then they will use your license plate number to send you a bill. They call it Toll-by-Plate.

What if your rental car has a transponder and you buy a transponder - how does the system know which transponder to bill?

This is from their website:
SunPass Customers:
SunPass customers using a rental vehicle may have their tolls applied to their SunPass account. Customers with SunPass Portable transponders may use their transponders in their rental vehicles. (It is strongly recommended that SunPass customers access their online SunPass accounts or contact the SunPass Customer Service Center to add the rental vehicle subscription to their account for the rental period.) Please remember to remove your transponder upon return of the vehicle.
SunPass customers that do not have their transponders in the vehicle are subject to the tolls, fees and charges set forth below and in their rental agreements.

I recommend you head to the sunpass web page https://www.sunpass.com/index it explains toll-by-plate and how violations are handled

As I recall when you purchase a transponder you need web access to activate it and that can take up to 24 hours. You can buy in advance of your trip via the web page.

Thanks, although the description seems to speak more to those who have a transponder and are renting a car that does not come with a transponder. I guess I'll have to give them a call to get a clearer answer.

it is my understanding that the rental cars all use toll-by-plate so you either sign up to pay the company up front or get zapped for it later. If you use a transponder the rental company should not get a bill for the toll-by-plate.

This is my UNDERSTANDING tho and have not tried it

as far as the presence of cashless tolls around Orlando.

For the most part no, there are no cashless issues around Orlando (yet). There are a couple of exits off 528 (the road from airport to Port Canaveral) but you would have NO reason to take them. There isn't so much as a gas station for miles!

For the time being the cashless toll issue is in Miami and there, it is the turnpike extension which runs west of Miami as the by-pass to the Keys; & the rush hour car-pool lanes on 95 in Miami are now toll too and cashless.

If there are others I am not aware of them....

There are no mainline toll points in the Orlando that don't have a cash option, and I'm pretty sure they all have at least one attended, full-service booth. At most mainline toll points you do need to keep to the right and take an exit ramp to the toll booths; the thru lanes are electronic only.

I know of only one exit that does not take coins: that's a shortcut off of either the Turnpike or 528 (can't remember which) near the Florida Mall. If you don't have a transponder, you just need to stay on the highway to the main exit a half mile or so further down. The exit is clearly marked, "Sunpass Only."

Most on and off ramps do not have attendants. As long as you have a couple dollars of quarters handy, you'll be OK.

Rental cars in FL are almost always setup for SunPass/PlatePass and each agency has it's own process. I just use the car rental and platepass service, the toll charges are passed through to the renter, plus a small per day administrative fee.

We are driving from Sanford (Amtrak station) to Davenport, back up to Port Canaveral, the port to WDW, then WDW up to Sanford.

Do all of those major roads have tollbooths?

There are no toll roads around Orlando that have gone to a cashless system and nothing anytime soon either. As was mentioned, there are several toll roads in the Miami area that are cashless only plus one in the Tampa area. Rental car companies will either offer you a SunPass transponder to the Toll-By-Plate program.

Joelkfla, the one cashless exit in the Orlando area you mention is a shortcut from southbound Florida's Turnpike to westbound TOLL 528/Beachline Expressway. It is SunPass/E-PASS only. It's exit #265 and because it confused so many motorists, it is now signed only as the Consulate Drive exit and makes no mention of the Beachline.

Well Sanford to Davenport would be on I-4 which is free. But from Davenport to Port Canaveral and back would be via TOLL 417 & TOLL 528 which have staffed toll plazas 24/7.

Ok I got my Sunpass transporter. When I get to airport and get my rental car I just go online and add rental info correct?

This is what we've done to-date but I want to compare getting our own transponder vs. paying the rental car agency $2.50/day + tolls every year.
