hotels and car rental are now booked for our New England extravaganza. Should be a blast. Going to Manchester NH, Portland ME, Burlington VT, and Boston. Any place in particular that I shouldnt miss?

Any amazing diners or restaurants? Places along the way that I should make sure to stop in? I am open to suggestions

Keeping in mind I will have my mum and Aunt with me (both in their 70's) so they have to be family friendly.

We are thinking of going up to Freeport to see LLBean and have a long list of stuff in Boston.

We are going on the 15th through the 20th of October.

Salem Ma kin October is so much fun!!!!! Go on a weekday if you can, less people! Go to the witch museum and take some haunted tours. Salem Ma is the most fun place to be in October! You will love it!

google Salem Ma Haunted Happenings, I cant post the link for some reason.

No recommendations, just wanted to say it sounds like a beautiful trip! Have a wonderful time!

oh I agree go to Salem, it is not to be missed in October, the entire month is Halloween!
personally I would skip manchester NH, unless you have a specific reason to go there?
or if you want to veer a little northwest from manchester the Lake Sunapee area is gorgeous.
here is the link for Salem

I agree not much to see in Manchester. I would go a little further north to the White Mountains. Lincoln/Woodstock or North Conway are both nice areas.

I'm guessing you're flying into Manchester? If not, I agree with others, there isn't a lot in Manchester.

How about stopping in Kennebunkport, Maine for a few hours? That's my hometown.:) Kennebunkport is a beautiful little town right on the coast. If you're headed up to Portland, it's right off the Maine Turnpike or Route One.
It's very "New Englandy" looking.:) There are a lot of shops and restaurants all within a small area, easy to walk around in. There are some very good seafood restaurants. Alisson's Restaurant, The Landing and Federal Jack's are some of our favorites. Allison's has a good view of the town center, and the other two restaurants have excellent views of the boats coming and going in the harbor. The Clam Shack has excellent seafood (a favorite of the Bushes when they're in town:)) but you'd have to eat your food standing up by the bridge or on a bench somewhere.

The downtown area of Portland isn't too exciting. The Old Port area has a lot of restaurants and shops and can be fun to walk around and explore, though. The waterfront area is scenic. I recommend Dimillo's Floating Restaurant for a good meal with a beautiful view of the water. Good food in a unique setting!

If I can be of any help, or answer any questions, please ask! You're going at a beautiful time of year. Fall is the season I miss the most out here in the desert.:sad2: Have a great time!!

Ohhh...ITA w/luv!!! My DSis lives in Kennebunk and my M&D spend their summers on Drakes Island, Wells. :sunny:

Wanted to mention for breakfast a tourist all time fav restaurant is THE MAINE DINER on Rte 1, Wells, Me. Portions are great, the service is great and the food is YUMMMMMY!

And like luv, there is nothing, IMHO, better than Fall in New England. The scenery is amazing. I miss Fall as well. :sad1:

My Great (X7) Grandfather built the Mill in Bedford, thus the purpose of trip. Thanks for all of the ideas! Keep them coming!

Kennebunkport is on my list that sounds beautiful :)

Most of the shops and restaurants are within easy walking distance of each other, so it's easy to park your car and get around on foot. The biggest, and most convenient lot is behind Alisson's Restaurant.

Be sure to take a drive down Ocean Avenue (easy access from the center of town). One side of the road has gorgeous views of the ocean and the other side has some beautiful homes. Ocean Ave takes you past Walker's Point, where the Bush compound is located. There are places along the road where you can pull over and get out for a better view. There are usually artists set up along the road with their paints and easels, too.:)

You have my number, Robin! It sounds like you are coming right through my town. :)

Just chiming in to say that I am jealous. We had a short trip to Boston this summer and I would love to go during the fall. I wish I could move there. I love that city! Have a great time! :)

thanks so much for the great ideas!

Now I have to ask, am I going to be in trouble on the 320 through to Burlington at this point in the season? I dont want to get caught in a snowstorm. It didnt look like it when I was doing the research but I trust you locals more LOL

Just south of Burlington is Shelburne, VT. There you will find my idea of heaven...Shelburne Farms. Nestled on the shore of Lake Champlain between the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The architecture...the landscape...the feel I get when we go there is like no other. I literally love to be there.

Take a peek...and think of me if you decide to stop by! :cloud9:

Robin, snow is pretty unlikely this time of year. If we do get some, it's an overnight dusting that won't stick on the roads.

Thanks :)

We are getting really excited. Ive copied down everyones suggestions and am sending it all on. They pretty much left it up to me what we do. LLBean though seemed to be a hit and they would like to try to see the Trapp Family lodge.

They will get to Manchester the day before I do so they will have time to look around and see whatever it is they want to see there. I'm interested but they both have more of a connection to that side of the family than I do.

No recommendations but I just wanted to say that this trip sounds wonderful!! Please post pictures when you get back!

Ohhh, you might like to visit Ben & Jerry's in Waterbury, VT, too. We enjoy a cone (or two!) during our Vermont vacations ~ and the factory tour is fun. We visited the Trapp lodge our first trip to Vermont. It didn't really do anything for me, but we have some great photos of the scenery up there! And Stowe is a great town to visit...fun and friendly!

Oh, I'm jealous...I want to go with you! ;)
