All about the Autotrain

We had a good trip. Got into Sanford at 8:30. Full train-just over 400 people. I do have an issue with the wine and cheese and the lounge car. Why do 2 people sit at the booths made for more and spread out and refuse to let anyone sit there? It was packed so we took our wine and snacks back to our room. We actually saw someone ask if they could sit with a couple playing cards and the guy said "no". Last time I checked we all paid for the train. That plus when we went to dinner at 7, almost every single table was still occupied by the same people. There were also a lot of snowbirds and I saw quite a bit of attitude from them too. It's been raining here. Almost all morning and a couple of times this afternoon. And it's going to get worse tomorrow and Sunday, yuck! We're here in Orlando for my DH's company annual trip/business meeting that's held in a different city each year. Don't think it's going to be as fun this year if we're all stuck with a lot of rain.

Anyway, train was full, we did meet some nice people and enjoyed the bedroom so much more than the roomette. Beds were a lot more comfortable and it's easier to sleep lined up with the train than parallel and rolling with it.

We have only done coach seats so far, but I'm wondering if we did decide to book a room, can we add that later, or is it like the seats and it just keeps getting more expensive as the trip approaches?

We upgraded to a deluxe sleeper when we checked in on day of departure and it was an extra $607, coming back we upgraded to the same two days before returning for $560. It is a little cheaper coming north, which I thought it was the other way around. So, if they have empty sleepers you can get one!

Gosh, sorry to hear that people were hogging the booths. I might have been tempted to just sit there anyway or hover over their table.:rotfl2:

Glad you got a bedroom and enjoyed it!

Just wanted to post some info regarding the Autotrain in case it can help anyone...

My mom and I took the Autotrain down and back in July. Going down we had coach seats in the lower level (easier for my mom....). We really liked the location and the openness of the coach car. Based on the info from the Dis, we asked for the last seats in the car. This was great because you had no-one walking by you, and you had room behind the seats where you could put some of your belongings. The man from the couple across the aisle actually put his pillow and blanket behind their seats and slept there all night (loudly snoring, I might add!) There are not many seats, and it was mostly very quiet. (There were no children in our car, mostly older adults.) The seats have outlets, trays, and leg rests, and are quite comfortable. There is a door that separates the seats from the stairs and the restrooms. We did not get bothered by anyone coming down the stairs and using the restrooms, and no bad odors. In the other part of the car, there is a handicapped restroom available that is larger, and also a ladies' restroom at the end that had an outer area with double sinks, a big mirror, and two stools, along with the restroom.

However, both my mom and I could not really sleep, even though the seats are large and roomy. So, when we got to Sanford, we upgraded right away to a roomette ($190) for the return trip. The seats themselves are not as comfortable in the roomette, and it is quite small, and hard to move around when the beds are down. Also, someone needs to be somewhat agile to be able to climb up to the top bed, and it can be claustraphobic, because there is no window up there. However, I don't mind, and having the actual beds and the privacy make it worth it for us. The train was on-time both directions.

My husband and I will be going on the Autotrain round trip at the end of January. We were able to move 60,000 miles from our Continental One Pass account to Amtrak. When we called Continental to transfer the points, they said that Amtrak needed to transfer the points. When we went back to Amtrak, they said Continental must do it. We finally found someone at Continental who knew about it and they transferred the points with no problem. They said it would take 10 business days, but it only took about 3-4days. It is a 1 for 1 transfer. I do not know how this all will be affected by the merger.

We were told, to redeem the points, that it is 10,000 points each way for the car (we have a regular car - don't know if oversized is more), 15,000 each way for a roomette, and 20,000 each way for a bedroom. We chose the bedroom, so it was 60,000 points total when we booked the tickets. (You don't pay separately from the accomodations for your tickets as with a regular reservation.) I know that, going down, for our dates, the bedroom was something like $890!!! We do like the bedroom MUCH better than the roomette, and it has its own bathroom. However, usually it is more than we are willing to pay. As other people mentioned, it is cheaper the earlier you book it.

I really enjoy the Autotrain, and we have had mostly positive experiences. My husband prefers to fly, but doesn't mind the train. We always meet interesting people, and love not having to worry about packing and like to have our own car.

Hope this helps! :goodvibes

Anyone know the refund policy on Amtrak? I'm asking because the auto train is the only expense that I can't pay off a little bit at a time. I can purchase park tickets one at a time and pay the resort in payments. I was thinking if I book the auto train or regular Amtrak when I get my taxes back for maybe a $500-$600 amount, then wait to see if the auto train sales come out late April, I can book those using the $500-$600 already in tickets. Is this possible? At the very least I'll have to add alittle but what happens if I lose a little (which I doubt, at the very least it will be myself and 4 kids and an oversized vehicle). Thanks.

I'm not really sure what you are asking but. When you "book" the autotrain, you pay for it in full. This amount is fully refundable until you are "ticketed" on the autotrain; which for most people is when you show up at the station for the trip. I booked our fall autotrain trip back in March, and ended up changing dates, and got a refund for $45 because the new date was cheaper. So, if you book now and the price goes down, you will get a refund; unlike an airline ticket.

We just booked the train for our trip next August.
I as checking the prices this morning and the round trip price dropped about a little over $600 from when they were first listed in Sept.:thumbsup2
The return trip is now the same cost as going down where it was originally about 50% more.
The price on a roomette dropped from around $260 to $129 going down and some ridiculouse price around $390 to $129 coming back.
The trip with 2 roomettes would have been over $2000 earlier in the week is now less than $1400 and this include labor day weekend.

That price drop is amazing! I just checked also at it went down to 1200 from 1800!

Four our last trip, we watched those room prices go up and down a few times. When I did finally book, I did not get the lowest price I had seen at one point for the roomettes...but we did okay.

I've been contemplating a one-way trip in March on the Autotrain but really can't seem to get myself to pull the trigger on that one. With the room prices, we'd have to do coach right now and I guess I figure we could do just as well driving back instead.

BTW anyone have ANY idea when they will release more rates for 2012. I am looking to travel over Thanksgiving week in 2012 and just keep watching and waiting for rates to show up for my timeframe. Right now they only go through September 2012 and not even the full month. Was curious how often they release new rates online? :confused3

We are going this year for Thanksgiving and are using Amtrak points. What I love about this is no matter how expensive your ticket is to go coach always used 5,500 each way per person and the car is 10,000 each way. The fares were very expensive the day we are going but we used points so it did not matter.

we have points left over also so I will have to see for our next trip - if the prices are inexpensive we might save our points and pay for our tickets.

on the train! Boarded without a hitch, sat in the lounge car and played cards, had a great dinner. Watching a movie in the family bedroom..then jammies and bed. Everyone on the train is so friendly.

Bookings open up 11 months out. For Thanksgiving 2012 you need to start looking sometime around Christmas.

Just booked for July/August 2012 too!!! Shocked when I checked the prices this morning that they were the same both ways!!! The car went down over $150 too!!! Saved over $500.00!!! :cool1::cool1::cool1::cool1::cool1::yay::yay::yay::yay:

Peanut1 -- hope you have a great trip!

To all those with price drops -- woo hoo!!

I'm going to check my January trip...I'm sure it didn't go down (since it decreased a month after I bought so I saved $200-300 then), but it's worth a check!!

We did..it may have been our best ever. The train ride home was so relaxing and enjoyable and I actually slept. We got in early at 8am.
