Aliens, F&W waddle & food porn-Oct2014 BCV & 1st time DCL (Updated 19Apr2015)

Saturday – 10/04/14

Today we are docked at Disney’s private island – Castaway Cay. FYI, it is pronounced “key”, not “kay”. The ship docked earlier and we took a peek outside

I had to try out my new telephoto lens. Note to self – don’t change the lens inside and walk outside or it will fog up

Cabanas anyone?

Nope, that’s not a palm tree

We are scheduled to ride these later today

As we disembark, we notice they are doing a little touch up work while docked

We have arrived!

I’m glad we decided to arrive by ship instead of plane like these guys

On our way here

You can’t paint a prettier picture

Is the water clear enough for you?

(Continued from previous post 2)

You don’t have to worry about crowds on a private island

Wanna parasail?

Yup…there’s our room

She’s a beautiful ship

Up next for us…or is it?

Nope, it wasn’t to be. The winds started picking up and a few jet ski passengers fell off so they canceled our excursion. Damn! I was really looking forward to this but it is what it is.

After eating lunch on the island we shopped a bit, walked around and took in the sights and eventually started back to the ship.

Riding the tram back to the ship, a young boy about 5 or 6 sitting with his parents looked at DW’s cruise room key card on her lanyard and pronounced her name. I was duly impressed that someone so young could do so well. Then he looked at my card and pronounced my name. He paused for a second, deep in thought and said, “Since both of you have the same last name, you must live together.” Out of the mouths of babes… His parents were embarrassed but it was just too cute.

Back onboard, we attended a DVC promotional get together just to see what inspired others to buy DVC while onboard. There were no special deals to be had so we passed on adding points. We did get to talk to the presenters about other DCL cruises, especially the Disney Wonder to Alaska. It didn’t take much but we were convinced that this would be our next cruise.

More entertainment in the main atrium

Tonight is an optional formal night sooooo

On our way to the restaurant, we stopped by the Future Cruise desk. Maybe it was the fact that I had told DW I suspended my life insurance for the cruise or maybe she was having a good time but either way, DW had not pushed me overboard. As a result, I surprised her by booking an Alaska cruise for later this year! We are sailing on the Disney Wonder leaving Vancouver, Canada on 8/24/15 for a 7 night cruise! We will fly out a few days early to Sacramento, CA and see DS2 and then fly to Vancouver the night before the cruise. We are already looking at excursions to go whale watching, ride an old steam train through the mountains into Canada and take a helicopter up to a dog sled camp on the glacier and then mush our way back on the dog sled! This should be fun but I don’t know about a warm weather Southern boy so far up north!

After getting our 10% cruise discount on the Alaska cruise (saved $552!) for booking onboard, we go to our restaurant for tonight - the Animator’s Palate. Here is their menu

And our food porn for the evening

And our server Bertram.

This man was great. He was always there when you needed anything but never hovering around. More of our meal for the evening

The dessert menu

My dessert

(Continued from previous post 4)

Now here is where Bertram went the extra mile. During our first night at Enchanted Gardens, DW and I were talking about a crème brulee she had at a restaurant in New Orleans that she really liked. Bertram must have heard us talking because when DW said she didn’t want any dessert, he asked her if he could bring her a dessert not on the menu that he thought she might like. Well of course she accepted and in a few minutes, Bertram brought her this

Is that first class service or what? Bertram had such a huge smile on his face seeing the pleasure he brought! It is service like this that can make an entire trip something special.

That was the meal and it was just as good as we had at Enchanted Gardens the first night. My rating? Another solid

A

Why not an A+ you ask? Well, for the same reason as before, our table mates. Paulo and Vicky from Brazil joined us tonight as we expected. Just as we experienced the first night, conversation was limited. Bertram found another server that spoke some Portuguese and brought him over to translate the menu for our two table mates from Rio. We asked how they enjoyed Nassau and Castaway Cay and explained that we missed dinner with them the previous night because we were at Remy’s. At some point Paulo asked me a question and the conversation went something like this…

Paulo – Have you heard of 51 area in the United States?

Bill – Do you mean Area 51 in Roswell, New Mexico?

Paulo – Sim, sim (apparently this means yes in Portuguese). Do you believe in aliens?

Bill – (In my head: Oh hell, where is this going?) Uh, I’m not sure if I do but I do know there are things that cannot be explained.

Paulo – She (pointing to his wife) does not believe but I do. I’ve seen them, twice.

Bill – (Politely smiling and wondering if they were his kinfolk) Really?

Paulo – Sim, sim. Aliens been here long, long time. 12 meter tall aliens built pyramids.

Bill – (Take a drink of water and try to figure out what to say next. 12 meters tall?! That’s 39+ feet tall) Uh huh

A brief lull in the conversation ensued and I was hoping this was over but noooooo

Paulo – You see President Obama on TV?

Bill – (Okay, I know some believe he wasn’t born in this country but I didn’t think it was that type of alien) Uh huh

Paulo – You see men around him wearing dark glasses with wire coming from ear?

Bill – You mean the Secret Service detail?

Paulo – Sim, Sim…they are aliens.

Bill – Really? (Shut up Bill, in the words of Elsa, let it go, don’t encourage him)

Paulo – Sim, sim.

Thank God for our server Bertram!! At this point we had finished our meal and he came by to thank us for sailing on his ship and wish us well as we disembark in the morning.

We quickly said our goodbyes to Paulo and Vicky and practically ran out! As we exited the restaurant, DW, in a moment completely apropos for the situation, stated, “Holy crap on a cracker!” (For you Big Bang TV series fans, you know this is a favorite saying of Penny when Sheldon does something so totally head shaking incredulous!) I don’t know what else to say about this. I was so flabbergasted that I forgot to leave the tips I had in my pocket for Bertram, Winaya, Ivan and Foster! I meandered around waiting long enough to make sure Paulo and Vicky had left. Here is a pic I took while waiting

I slipped back into the restaurant to find Bertram. I gave him our gratuity envelopes, thanked him for his excellent service and bid adieu.

We decided to take in the show, Disney’s Believe, at the Walt Disney Theatre. It is a Broadway style show that tells the story of a dedicated botanist that is so involved in his work that he forgets his daughter’s birthday. The daughter makes a birthday wish and the Genie from Aladdin appears to make her wish come true. Numerous Disney characters join in the fun (including Cinderella, Peter Pan, Mary Poppins, Belle, Rafiki, Princess Tiana, etc.) to help the father realize that magic is real. It was VERY good! If you are a Disney fan, you will enjoy this show much more than you expected.

After the show, we head back to our room to see Foster had been busy again

And that my friends is the end of our last full day onboard the Disney Dream. To say I was pleasantly surprised with our time on this cruise would be an understatement. A lot of the people I know personally have cruised but most have been on Carnival or Princess cruise lines. Based on the stories they told, I had no desire to go on a cruise. DW has been talking about going on a cruise for several years now. As I stated earlier, I raised an eyebrow when she mentioned going on a cruise because of the news stories about someone mysteriously going overboard. :scared1: Maybe she’s waiting until a later cruise to put her evil plan in place, but she didn’t do it on this one so we will go again. The food on the Dream was top notch – even the Cabanas buffet. The regular rotation restaurants are all excellent and Remy’s would definitely deserve a AAA 5 diamond rating. We could not have asked for better service from our room steward and our dinner servers. The room was spotless and not worn at all. We did not partake in all the entertainment offerings onboard but the show we did see was as good as any I’ve seen. We didn’t get a chance to see the Golden Mickey’s or Villain’s Tonight but I suspect they will be just as good as Disney’s Believe. There were also movies showing in the Buena Vista Theatre that we did not see. A 3 day cruise is great for a first timer like me but it is not long enough to do all that is offered. We enjoyed it so much that we have booked an August, 2015 7 night cruise to Alaska on the Disney Wonder and an April, 2016 7 night western Caribbean cruise on the Disney Magic. The only thing to do now is find a cruise on the Disney Fantasy and we’ll have the entire set!!

Nice pictures with the zoom on your camera, Bill, of Castaway Cay. Castaway Cay is the MAIN reason I want to do a cruise.

You and DW sure look nice all dolled up for dinner. :)

Way to go Bertram on the special dessert for the Mrs. :thumbsup2

Oh my...that conversation sounds like complete agony. I don't know if I could have handled it.

Bill, I have to tell you, that I've kind of have wanted to do a cruise, but it wasn't a top ten thing on my list. However, reading about your short cruise and the good time you had, I've moved it up a bit. I'm thinking a 3-day might just work for us. I may be coming to you for questions.

Thanks Kat! CC is so nice because it's Disney, it's not crowded, it's clean and it's Disney!

You and DW sure look nice all dolled up for dinner. :)
 Thank you ma'am

He was great but all the CM's on this trip were top notch and go out of their way to help in any way.

We are booked for another cruise this August and I don't know whether to request a US/Canada/UK citizen as a tablemate or roll the dice and possibly have another story to tell! :scared1:

As I've mentioned NUMEROUS times in this TR, I was apprehensive about taking a cruise. I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it and we didn't do half the things we could've done. A 3 or 4 night cruise is good for the first time to see if you will like it. If you like it, you will say it's not long enough. We have already booked an Alaska cruise for August, 2015 and a Caribbean cruise for April, 2016 so I guess we liked it! :rotfl2:

Did they explain why "Cay" is pronounced "Key" rather than how it is spelled? Always puzzled me.

really a bummer that you didn't get to do the jet ski excursion - that would have been fun

I love this picture! i could totally see that on like a promotional flyer for Disney cruises

Congrats on booking the Alaska cruise ... the helicopter/dog sled excursion sounds really cool! (pun sorta intended)

What a bizarre dinner conversation. So does that mean the Aliens didn't really like Abraham Lincoln since they let him get shot?

Your meal looks very nice and what a nice gesture by Bertram - you are right that acts like that go a long way towards making a vacation memorable

Glad you enjoyed the cruise so much! We definitely want to do one some day but want to wait until all the kids are old enough for the kids club ... for now targeting 2018 to coincide with my 40th birthday

No one said and I didn't ask but it's always puzzled me as well. :confused3

It would have been nice but we had so much else to do. I've got it penciled in for our next Caribbean cruise!

Thanks...it just proves that if the subject is beautiful, even a novice photog takes decent pics!

LOL That is the excursion we are most looking forward to trying.

It could be why...one never knows. It's funny as it can be now thinking back but at the time it was oh so strange!!

ALL the meals we had on the Dream were excellent and the CM's were on the same level!

If the budget allows, it is a definite must do! I can't believe I've been missing out on this all these years! It just proves that DW has a good idea every once in a while but don't tell her I said so...she might get the "big head"! :rotfl2:

I am so not used to this new "alert" system because I can only figure out getting alerts if I log on! We were down your way yesterday to see "Mary Poppins" at USM...OH MY GOODNESS!! It was so incredible!! They did an amazing job! At some points I thought "you cannot cry!" not because it was sad but just so good!! LOL I'm such a sap sometimes!! We will have to let you know sometime when we make it that way with extra time!

So to your report...uhm...no words for the dinner conversation...i just...can't....o_O But the food porn...that looks so good!!! Great pictures of the cruise. I have cruised on Royal Caribbean and know the value of longer trips which is why I haven't done a 3-4 day Disney cruise. One day though I will because all I hear are amazing stories! Alaska will be amazing!!!

You're kidding me, right?!?!? We were at that performance last night for the 7:30pm show! When were you there? It really was good, wasn't it? The orchestra was fantastic and we thought the actor that played Bert was the best performer by far. It was a bit strange watching the stage show because of the differences from the movie version but they really did great!

The dinner conversation defies words but what a story to tell, right? :rotfl2:
The food was so much better than what we expected. It's almost worth the cruise just for that!

Such a great time it seems you had on the Dream! Remy is so amazing!

Okay...you've ALMOST convinced me. Maybe since we aren't planning a DW trip next year since the plan is to move to Florida we can plan a short cruise. I'll have to put my thinking cap on.

Thanks...we really enjoyed the cruise and Remy went beyond expectations!

If you're thinking, you're planning...next is plotting followed by doing! It's practically a foregone conclusion now! :thumbsup2

I'm back!!! Literally and figuratively. Took me a while since bookmarking my space to actually having a chance to start reading the report. And we just returned from a brief trip to the Dark Side, so I have been catching up from that!

I have read through your arrival and first day.

Glad you discovered that you needed to go back for the medicine bag before you were too far away. That is my concern when we are flying- we will forget something at home (like passports) and need to go back home. At least you didn't really have a "deadline" to meet.

That's cool that you got an upgrade to a suite at the Radisson, but why couldn't that happen on a longer stay???

Good picture of you as you boarded the ship.

What an awesome view of Cape Canaveral. We cruised out of Port Canaveral once, but we didn't see that. I think a Disney ship was blocking our view!!! ;)

Good start with the buffet lunch and it looks like you have a decent looking stateroom. The cheese plate was a nice touch. It looks awesome and has a nice selection of treats.

I love your pictures of the Aqua Duck in action!

******************************************************************

MMmmmmm!!!! Dinner at Enchanted Garden looked fabulous. We must have very similar tastes because you both ordered pretty much what I would have gotten.

Too bad on your table mates. The assigned seating is one of the downsides of cruising. Sometimes it can work out, but what are the chances.

We have taken 3 cruises- the first was when Mark and I were in our mid-twenties and we were seated with a middle aged couple (the husband was an air traffic controller) and an older couple. The funny thing was, Mark and I had been married 5 years and the older couple were honeymooners.

The second time was a family reunion cruise (42 members of my family, paid for by Auntie Jeanne. We love Auntie Jeanne) and we were seated with cousins that we don't see often, so that was really nice to spend some time with them.

The third cruise was just the four of us and we were seated with another family (who never showed up) and a couple in their sixties. OK, but we didn't have a lot in common.

What is the towel animal?

Beautiful moonlight shot to end the night!!!

:goodvibes:

Oh my goodness! We were at the 2pm show. When we left I told Madison I wish we had tickets for the next show because 1. it was so good and 2. to compare how the different actors/actresses portrayed the characters. Mary Poppins, the children and Bert were all different from your show, I believe. Our Mary Poppins gleamed from the stage. And Jane was adorable. Bert was really good and I saw glimpses of Dick Van Dyke. I agree about the differences between the stage show and movie. We had watched the movie that morning since it had been a while and we really took note...but it wasn't in a bad way at all! BTW: One of the trumpeters (?? do you call them that?) was in the high school band with Madison. So we had a connection there...super kid and wonderful trumpet player, so talented! But at times we were in awe of the orchestra!

ETA: DIS edited the name for Van Dyke....o_O

Really enjoyed your report, thanks for all the great pictures and details, Remy is very wow!

I just found your "dark side" TR and subbed in. Can't wait to read more.

I have read through your arrival and first day.

Deathly hallows fear here too (in honor of your dark side TR!) If DW forgets her meds we might as well turn around and forget the trip.

That's cool that you got an upgrade to a suite at the Radisson, but why couldn't that happen on a longer stay???
I mean really, right?!? On second thought, I'll take pixie dust in any volume I can get it...usually I get coal dust!

Good picture of you as you boarded the ship.
Thank you ma'am

Well if your view has to be blocked, it might as well be something great like another Disney ship or maybe your celebrity crush!

Good start with the buffet lunch and it looks like you have a decent looking stateroom. The cheese plate was a nice touch. It looks awesome and has a nice selection of treats.
The stateroom was great and there was an ulterior motive for the cheese plate. No comment on the results!

I love your pictures of the Aqua Duck in action!
A 3 night cruise is just not long enough. We never had a chance to ride the AD!

Keep reading about the table mates...it gets better. On our next cruise I'm going to roll the dice again. If it gets too bad we can always request another table and if not, we'll either make some friends or have a good story to tell (or they'll have a good story to tell about us!! :scared1:)

What is the towel animal?
The 1st night was a turtle.

Beautiful moonlight shot to end the night!!!

:goodvibes:
Welllllll, with the cheese plate and the moonlight..... :dancer:

Awwwww....we need to communicate better so next time you're in the Hub City or when we're near the Capital so that we can finally meet in person!
