Yeah, I know I'm pathetic. Algebra I in the 10th grade, but I digress.

I don't get rational and irrational numbers. My teacher isn't very hands-on, which is how I learn thing easiest.
In the book, the definition says a rational number is when "a" and "b" can be put into a fraction, then it has some symbol (it looks like an equals sign with a slash thru it) and it would equal 0.

Where are they getting "a" and "b" from? Examples would be greatly appreciated!!

Isn't the equal sign with a sign in it mean not equal to?

Anyways, I was just under the impression rational numbers were real and ended. Irrational numbers are like pi, they don't end.

ok so a rational number can be put as a fraction meaning a over b. the equal sign with the slash is read as "is not equal to". it says that b cannot be equal to 0 becuase u cant have 0 on the bottom of a fraction. not lets say the number is .56 this ia rational because you can put it as a fraction. 56 over 100. a being 56 and b being 100. another example could be 4. it could be 4 over 1. a being 4 and b being 1. did this help?

yes.
so a fraction like 1/0 would be irrational?

well it wouldnt be irrational becuase u can never divide by zero. like if you put that in a scientific calculator it will say that its an error.

What about the negative fractions, are they still rational?

=/= means not equal to.

Thanks guys. I now realize some of my questions were kinda stupid, LOL.

Shelby, I know that symbol. This was not that, it was one = with a / through it.

its the same thing, except computer keyboards don't have that symbol, so you write it using two equals signs instead of one, but its read the same way. it means not equal to.

there.
That's your not equal to sign.
