Aldi is not "all that".

Funny, I just went to Aldi's today as their ads have been shown a lot. I went a long time ago and found nothing so I thought I'd give it it another chance.

Milk: $2.50 a gallon (same as Wegman's and actually more expensive than some other places).

Eggs: $1.20 dozen. Target had them for 99 cents last week.:confused3

I looked at a variety of other items waiting for some great deal to jump out at me, but it didn't. Even the 5lbs of sugar was equal to or higher than my local grocery stores. Not sure what's going on.

Edited to add: They had a GREAT deal on Halloween pumpkins. They were beautiful, quite large, and only $3.99. I didn't buy it because it would have rotted before Halloween.

The aldis in NJ ran in a bit of trouble maybe 4 years ago. The state accused them of taking expired meat and repackaging them as fresh. Tons of bad press and I stop going after that.

We'll meet in Talledega, I'll bring the gloves and you and my wife can duke it out for that title. :rotfl:

Like others here, she hits Aldi's first, then Kroger or Walmart for the remainder. We really like the bacon wrapped filets. My sister will have us pick up the max number of gallons of milk for her (she has 5 kids) when we visit because they're cheaper than anywhere else she shops.

LOL!! I won't duke it out with her, I'd just go shopping with her!!:cool1:

I do the SAME route, Aldi's first, Kroger or Publix for 10 for 10 or b1g1, then to Walmart for the onlyatwallyworld stuff.

Now I have to try those bacon wrapped filets!

The nearest Aldi's is about seventy miles away, but we go every few months and stock up of certain staples. It certainly pays to know your rotating loss leaders and such, but I do save on cream soups (for cooking), canned diced tomatoes, tomato sauce and a few other things.

You are soooo right on Avocados! I love them and sometimes can get them at Aldi for 50 cents each!!! That is INSANE!!!!

I guess Aldis charges different prices in different regions? :confused3

Avocados are $0.29 and milk is $0.99. Eggs are almost always $0.49/dozen. You can't really beat that anywhere ;)

Since there is an Aldis directly across from my favorite grocery store I now always stop at both for my groceries. I get produce from Aldis and some snack type items but buy my pet food, deli meats and other household products at my usual store.

Some of the seasonal items Aldi gets are OUTSTANDING. My 86yr old grandmother from Germany can not stop raving about the Stolen (yech!!) I picked up for her last week. She said it is the best she has had since childhood :) I picked up another to freeze until Christmas (typical holiday treat).

They can be hit or miss but really do have dirt cheap prices. At least at my local store.

Your Aldi's sounds a HECK of a lot nicer than mine. Maybe they just don't do well in the DC area.

That's it. I'm moving to Texas. If I can find avocados anywhere around here for less than $1.50, I'm in luck. Eggs-never for under $1.25 and that's on the cheap. I can't speak to milk since i only buy organic, but WOW!!!!

My aunt will agree with others about Aldi's produce. She likes cauliflower & at Aldi's it's priced per head rather than per pound. At a local Copps grocery today, that would have cost her almost $4 & as I remember Aldi's was charging a dollar.

I've seen good produce there too, but since it's just DH & me I don't buy any. However, once winter comes I'll get bananas because I should be able to finish them before they get icky. In the summer I only get 2 at a time & Aldi's only sells big bunches.

Their seasonal stuff can be good too but overall I wasn't impressed.

Milk & Egg prices vary by state because some states have a minimum that they can be sold for. If I get milk from my local Super market it's $5.69, the gas station is $3.99 Aldis is usually $2.99

We don't have Aldi in SoCal but when I was home in August went to an Aldi in Northeast CT and thought the prices were awesome!!! I thought the whole 'shopping cart' for a quarter was cool because you had no sc's running amok in the parking lot!!! :thumbsup2

My parents shop at Aldi in Florida and they love it as well!!! :thumbsup2

Don't like the Aldis either. I can find milk, eggs cheaper at Wegmans! (and I still don't have to rent a cart!)

If you are looking for inexpensive goods, Aldis is the place. However, I can do better at Wegmans all of the time.

Oh yeah to the PP who mentioned the carts! I love the rental carts! Saves them overhead because they don't have to pay people to go collect them and you don't have loose carts all over the lot! I admit I am biased, I like just about everything about Aldi.

To the Texas poster, 29 cents is lunacy! In regular stores around here they can go up to nearly $2.00 each at times so 50 cents is just crazy!

I love Aldi flower bouquets and stop in every other week fora bouquet all winter. Where else can you get 1/2 dozen roses for $4? I'm also a fan of their nuts and dried fruits which I pick up when I'm there for the flowers. All their flowers last a long time and are a huge mood lifter:goodvibes. Much better than meds for the winter blues IMO

Love Aldi here too- get milk, eggs, cereal, canned stuff (cream soups, tomatoes, spaghetti O's (rare)) also frozen vegetables, yogurt, cheeses and snack stuff- they have nurti grain type bars, fiber one (the ones with chocolate) and other stuff comparable to the name brands- I try something new each time and really haven't found anything I wouldn't get again at least not that i can remember!

I think a lot of the reasons people don't like aldis are kind of silly. Not being able to use a credit card, having to put a quarter in a cart. :confused3

ITA!!!
And you get the quarter back!!! :thumbsup2

I don't like to carry cash. I never have more than $10. I maximize my credit card use to maximize my air miles. Secondly, if I use my debit card, I have to remember to log it into my check book. I don't want to be bothered. I didn't even see putting a quarter in a cart. I just took an 'abandoned' one. That would have annoyed me also. I have four supermarkets within 1 mile, all of which actively compete with each other selling the brands that I like. Today for example, buy one, get two free. I bought three frozen pizzas, used three $1 off coupons and got all of them for free. Buy one 6 pack of diet coke, get two free. That resulted in 18 can of Diet Coke for $3.99. I bought 4 cases.

Why is it annoying to put a quarter in and get a cart? You get the quarter back when you put the cart back.

Not trying to be snarky. Genuinely curious. I found it odd when I first started shopping there because it was just new to me, but never did I find it annoying.

ETA I don't carry cash or change either. But, because I shop at Aldi frequently, I keep a quarter in the car to use for my cart. benn using the same quarter for over a year.

again, just curious. No antagonizing meant.

Since I took an abandoned cart, not knowing that they had to be paid for, if I had a full cart, took it way out in the parking lot, would I have had to return it to the front of the store where I picked it up? If so, that would have been very inconvenient. It was pouring today. All of the other stores that I shop at have "cart corrals" in the parking lot. I try to park fairly close to one rather than close to the store.

Well, I'm in the "I Love Aldi" camp! I get lots of basics for my pantry there, and I get their 2 liters of diet soda, since they're only like 39cents or something like that. Plus I like that they charge for bags - I see a lot more people using reusable bags, which is awesome. :thumbsup2

Yes, you have to return your cart from where you get it. I guess if it was raining and you didn't feel like walking back, you could leave it, but you'd lose your quarter. They do it this way so they don't have to hire extra people to patrol their parking lot for carts - it saves them some money, and it really isn't that inconvenient for customers.
