Alcohol packing tips (for flyers)?

We don't have time before the cruise or a way to buy alcohol once we land in FL. I want to pack a bottle of champagne and vodka in my luggage. Any tips?

We're flying in a day early (staying at Contemporary and going to MVMCP) so I'll be able to take the alcohol out of the checked luggage before we take the transfer to the boat.

We have used wine diaper bags several times. Luckly we have never had anything break to check how well they really work. We also put our bottles that are in the diapers in an XXL ziplock bag. We then use that bag as a laundry bag while onboard. When the cruise is over I squish all the dirty laundry down and close the bag and throw it in my suitcase. All my dirty laundry is in a handy dandy carrier for when I get home.

I recently used the wine diaper bags for all my alcohol. Good thing I did! I had leakage! I was planning to mix up batches of Hippie Juice so I pre-measured my liquors into rum runner flasks. I then slid my rum runner flasks down into the wine diapers and sealed. The largest rum runner (had a full batch in it: approx 2.5 cups total) did leak about half its contents. The wine diaper functioned perfectly and absorbed all the fluid. I had no leakage outside the diaper. I knew it leaked because I could smell the watermelon vodka when I opened the diaper pouches to inspect them.

Obviously for bottles of wine or champagne I'd just slide the bottle into the wine diapers. For hard liquor I'd transfer to rum runner flasks then pack in wine diapers just to have a better workable, solid shape. No wasted "air". Also, mini bottles travel well in the wine diapers.

Can you tell I'm now a believer in those things?!?! LOL!

((Ps. I used coupons to buy mine at Bed, Bsth, & Beyond. Is there a better, less expensive place to get them?))

I have never heard of wine diaper bags. I have brought home many bottles of alcohol and just packed them in the middle of my checked it bag. I will have to check these out before my cruise.

LOVE our wine diapers, but also have just used clothes to wrap around bottles. Obviously the wine diapers are a safer bet. We've used gardengrocer.com, too, but not for alcohol. I prefer to bring (lots) of my own, and be ready to rock 'n roll when we get on board!

I always use the wine diapers and have (knock on wood) had anything break. I also am sure to put the bottle in the middle of my suitcase tightly surrounded by clothes.

We have brought back limoncello, wine and olive oil from Europe with no issues using the wine diapers! Watch your luggage weight though.

I would like your recipe for Hippie Juice, if you wouldn't mind sharing. ;)

How much were they at BB&B?

It seems I got a good deal! WooHoo!

Sure! Very simple!

1 c. Watermelon Vodka
1/2 c. Triple Sec
1/2 c. Coconut Rum
Pink Lemonade mix (2 qt. portion)
Sliced strawberries

Dump liquors into a 2 qt. pitcher (or carafe, container, etc). Mix in the pink lemonade mix until dissolved. Dump in strawberries (I use about 1 c.). Fill to top with water. Refrigerate. Enjoy!

I know the logistics might feel a bit weird trying to pack supplies and all so I'll explain how I accomplished this on a cruise ship. ;) I pre-measured my liquors into the collapsible rum runner flasks. I used Crystal Light 2 qt. pink lemonade packets so those were easy to slide in with the liquor flasks. I did ship a box of other cruise stuff to the ship ahead of time because I traveled with 2 small carryon size suitcases. In my ship-bound box I had my 2 Rubbermaid carafes, my Tervis tumbler, etc. BUT, I think the carafes would be great to slide those flasks in to pack then wrap in a heavy mil plastic bag for travel. In the place of the carafes (because some people might not be so okay with leaving them behind) you could also use 2 qt. size orange juice jugs from home. I was in a 00T room so I simply asked our concierge to put in a request for a dish of sliced strawberries to be delivered at a specific time & day. I had intended to either find strawberries somewhere onboard, ask my servers at dinner about them, or call room service. I was prepared and okay with the thought of perhaps paying extra for them if need be but that detail worked out. I mixed my 2 carafes the afternoon before Castaway Cay. Right before we headed out on the island I wrapped each carafe in a towel and slid it into my beach bag. We had a cabana so I was able to shuffle a few things & load both carafes into that refrigerator for the day. I shared with my travel party. Made for a nice beverage to sip the afternoon away. When you get to the bottom, those strawberries are the best part. ;)

Thank you! Goodness, that sounds delicious.

If you have a Tuesday Morning where you live, occasionally they have turned up there. That's where I got mine and they were dirt cheap! I mean like $2 each cheap.

I always double up on ziplock bags, wrap in towels, then put them in plastic grocery bags before they go in the suitcase.

This time around? boxed wine.

I didn't think you could take liquid (unless little bitty travel sized) on a flight. :confused3

You can't take anything over 3oz in your carryon, but you are allowed to pack larger bottles in your checked luggage. Hence the problem, since checked luggage isn't treated delicately, it increases the chances of a bottle breaking or leaking.

ETA: DCL requires that beverages be in carryons and not in luggage that is brought on by the porters. So if you are flying and packing beverages in your checked luggage, you will have to get them at baggage claim yourself and transfer the bottles to your carryon.

Oh, Good to know! I didn't realize you could have it in checked luggage. Yeah, the way they throw luggage around I would be scared to put it in there.

I think I have read that DCL checks your checked luggage for liquids but am not sure on the rules for that either. I usually just have it in my carry on but then it is SO heavy till we get in our room.

I love how I learn something every day here! :goodvibes

Does DCL confiscate alcohol that is in checked luggage? Has that happened to anyone?

I see that you like to Keep It Low Key. ;)

I wish they made boxed vodka. Lol
