We were in Minnesota this weekend for the triathlon and our dd wanted us to pick up a bottle of wine at Walmart. We must have circled the store a few times and came out empty handed.

When we got to our dd's boyfriends parents house, they laughed at us and told us you could only get wine etc., at Liquor Stores. Leave it to Wisconsin to sell alcohol in almost every established grocery store, gas station, department stores etc. We will probably be like the country of Germany and have beer for sale at McDonalds in the near future.

So the question is, does your state allow alcohol in your grocery stores and gas stations.

In NY you can buy beer and wine cooler type drinks in grocery stores. Wine and liquor has to be bought at a liquor store.

Texas sells beer and wine in grocery store and gas stations. Hard alcohol can only be purchased in a liquor store. No alcohol before 12 on Sunday and liquor stores are closed on Sunday.

In Nebraska they sell everything at the grocery stores and gas stations any day of the week.

Both at home in Michigan and here in Arizona, you can buy beer, wine, and liquor at pretty much any grocery store or gas station. There are liquor stores as well which obviously have a larger selection.

Yes. ;) :rotfl:

Yes, gas, grocery and convenience stores. Not only that, we have drive-through places that sell alcohol too, there are 2 within blocks of my house.

In PA, you can only buy wine & spirits in a state-run liquor store. You buy beer in cases at a beverage distributor, or in six packs at a deli or certain types of restaurants. You cannot buy either in the grocery or convenience stores. It's insane.

I lived in NJ my entire life, until I moved to FL three years ago. I'd visited FL numerous times before so I was aware that alcohol was sold everywhere, but it still took me awhile to adjust to being able to buy it in the middle of my grocery shopping and errands. In NJ, you can't even buy beer unless you go to a liquor store.

Virginia is very similar. However, I noticed they started opening some ABC stores on Sunday. Beer/wine at the grocery store makes it so easy for stocking up for parties, etc.

I have never seen beet at a McDonalds here in Germany. Its just about everywhere else though, and my DD will be able to legally buy her own when she turns 16 this winter -- which is kind of an odd thought to me :rotfl:

As far as where alcohol is sold stateside, yes it seems to vary tremendously from state to state. Everywhere we have lived is different.

We were in PA many years ago and pulled into a gas station mini mart to buy beer and they guy behind the counter looked at us like we were crazy and said "dude, this is gas station!" LOL

another time I went into a grocery store in CT at about 8pm on a Saturday night. I thought "oh how nice...they put a plastic curtain over the beer to keep it cold"...any employee saw me carrying through the store and said "you know you can't buy that this late" LOL...this late...it was 8PM!

We had to drive to Rhode Island!

The state I was born in allows all kinds of alcohol in grocery stores and most have a great selection. However, many convenience stores opt to get only a beer license because it's far cheaper than a full liquor license. The state I live in now allows only beer in the grocery store. Wine and all other liquors have to be sold in a package store. We have a few stores where the wine and liquor store sits right next to the beer store. Same owner, same operator, separate stores. One of the major warehouse stores here has their wine and stuff in a separate little store with its own little entrance and registers. Oh and they don't sell Alcohol of any kind on Sundays.

You can buy beer and wine in gas stations and grocery sores here (Ohio) and liquor that is 40-proof and under. Some grocery stores have state liquor stores in them so they can sell it in those separated sections.

Liquor stores in Ohio are owned by the state government but they are run by private business owners who pay part of their profits back to the state.

True. I live in Ohio and even I'm surprised by how easy it is to buy beer, wine, and low proof alcohol. The grocery store I use the most has a liquor store inside of it. (I didn't know that about the private ownership, though) I didn't realize it was different in different states. Of course we have a few "dry" counties around. Don't try to go visit the Amish and buy beer!:rotfl:

Not totally true anymore! Our Giant Eagle has wine kiosk you can use and they also have a beer section. Most pizza shops around me sell beer.

I forget about it though and have never gotten wine there. I did pick up DH a 6pack once.

Illinois is the same way.

They aren't so much dry counties as they are townships. Trust me, I work in Amish country and could walk to a liquor store from my office. ;) The next township over? Won't even let a restaurant serve wine with dinner.

I too have been foiled at trying to buy beer in PA, stopped over in Erie for the night, pick up a pizza and think we'll just run into the gas station for a 6 pack, wrong! :(
