Alaska tsunami warning

I just saw one was posted for coastal Alaska. I wonder what the procedure is for cruise ships in the area.

Well at least the Wonder is safe, seeing as how I had to debark her in Vancouver this morning
And I looked up where the island is and it looks like it's out near Russia...

Was wondering the same. This is what I saw:

ALEUTIAN ISLANDS (CBS SF) — A tsunami warning has been issued for parts of Alaska after a magnitude 8.0 earthquake was recorded near Little Sitkin Island. Additional aftershocks as large as magnitude 5.9 continue to rock the Aleutian Islands, some closer to populated areas.

Tsunami.gov issued the alert for coastal areas of Alaska, warning that “significant inundation is possible or is already occurring.” Residents of the area were being warned to move inland, or to higher ground.

Hypothetically, what would happen if the ship were in port?

I assume the safest place for it to be would be out at sea. If they get a notice like this, do they just pull up anchor and split?

I see that this is supposed to affect just about every shoreline on the ocean to some degree.

Out to sea is the safest place for a ship in a tsunami, so I would imagine they would head out to sea. However, I don't run a cruise ship so...take it for what its worth.

It would depend on the port.

I believe it is the Big Island but it could be a differant island in Hawaii, that has a port that amplifies any and all tsunamis that come in. Natural underwater formation.

Ohau on the other hand, tends to be more protected from the tsunamis because of it's position in the island chain. So the ports there tend to be more protected.

The ports here in Okinawa have concrete barriers designed to break up the wave and disrupt the damage it would do.

Other factors that effect tsunamis and ports are coral reefs, ocean depth, shoreline, earthquake type/depth/strength and direction tsunami is coming from.

Out at sea would be safest, the tide height would be lower. But it would be a very hard call to make. If the ship/boat was not already out to sea, it might not be able to get far enough out to sea to ride out the tsunami. Not a call I would want to make.

As of right now Japan, has no tsunami warning/watch. We might have a bump in high tide or see a lower low tide.
