Ok, I know this is a trip report about a Princess cruise, but since disney is going to Alaska, and we were in vancouver, Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchikan, I figure that there might be some information that may be helpful to some future alaska cruisers.

A little about me...We have been on 3 disney cruises, and have loved them all. My family genrally travels with my parents, and this trip was no different. So, our group makes up DH(38), Myself (35), DS (10) and mom and dad, we will just say 60's. I will skip the part of us getting there and start the report in Anchorage. I hope that this will be helpful, and nobody will be mad that I am putting a Princess Cruise on a Disney site....here it goes anyway...

We arrived in Anchorage at about 6:30pm their time, which is 1 hour earlier that our time. We were all a little tired from our long day of traveling, so we headed down to the car rental counters and picked up our Mini Van from National. This was very painless and soon we were on our way out of the airport…one interesting point is how tiny the “road” out of the car rental parking lot was. I thought we were on a walk way, and it was obvious from the paint scrapes on the walls that we were not the only car that felt it was narrow. Once out of the parking lot we followed our GPS to our hotel. We had booked the Fairmont Inn and Suites by Marriott.
DSCF0075.jpg

It was not a very fancy hotel, but it was nice and clean. They had a breakfast in the lobby every morning, nothing special, but it was nice not to have to go far to find breakfast. We have stayed at the Residence Inn in Port Canaveral many times, and their breakfast and rooms are a little nicer. We checked in and went searching for dinner. We got something to eat at TGI Friday’s which was just around the corner. Then it was back to the hotel to call it a night.

Day 3 – July 4th
Portage Glacier and Alyeska Tram

When we got up this morning, it looked like it had rained the night before, but the weather was still not too bad, it was mainly just heavy clouds. It was during the night that I realized that I had forgotten my jacket…ooooppppssss, luckily DH is meticulous and packed 2, so I wore one of his. We had booked a 45 minute tour of portage glacier for noon. After breakfast, we decided to go drive downtown Anchorage and look for the train station, as we were leaving from there the next morning. For a city, Anchorage was not that big, and we would have like to walk it, but we did not have enough time for that on this trip. So we found the train station, and headed towards the airport, as the men in our family wanted to see the aviation museum. It was not a huge museum, but it was pretty cool. I think they guys would have liked to stayed there, but the women in the group was ready to get back on the road for our 1 hour drive down to portage glacier. The drive down was beautiful, there is nothing like the scenery in Alaska. We got to portage glacier and checked in for our boat ride out to portage glacier. Now, this ride was relatively (for Alaska) pretty inexpensive, but it was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. It was a little chilly so I was glad I had stolen one of my husband’s coats. We took the Ptarmigan out to the glacier, had plenty of time to take tons of pictures, and learn about how the glacier had retreated. They brought a chunk of the glacier aboard, and showed us ice worms.

We really enjoyed this little tour. When we got back we drove up to Girdwood and had lunch at a little shopping mall type area before we headed up the road towards Alyeska.

We made it up to Alyeska to ride the tram. When we got there we were greeted with a ton of fire trucks and ambulances. Apparently when one of the trams was on the way back down, a person had a medical problem on board, and shut down the tram for a couple of hours. We took the opportunity to wander a bit and take some pics. Eventually the tram started running again and we were on our way up. The tram was really exciting, and the views were breathtaking. There was still snow on the ground at the top, and of course my DS ran straight for the edge to look over. This was one of those heart stopping moments for me. After a few unhappy exchanges he came back away from the edge, and all was good. We wandered around for a bit and headed back down.

We were planning on stopping a crow creek mine after we had done Alyeska, but it was starting to get late, so we headed back to Anchorage for the night. The boys hadn’t had enough of the airplanes, so we picked up some Subway sandwiches and headed to Lake Hood. We drove almost all the way around the lake and finally found a parking lot right on the water’s edge to watch the float planes fly in and out of while we ate our sandwiches.

We had made train reservations the next morning with Alaska Railroad to ride down to Whittier. There were five of us in our group, so we were trying to decide the best way to get to the train station and then get the van back to the airport. We finally decided that instead of trying to do it all the next morning, we would just take the car back that night, then take a taxi the next morning. So DH and I dropped off my mom, dad and DS at the hotel, while we returned the rental van. Our hotel had a shuttle from the airport, so we hopped the shuttle back to the hotel and turned in for the night. It was all a pretty easy and painless fun filled day.

Up next....boarding the ship

Day 4 – July 5th
Boarding the Island Princess

We awoke early, the weather seemed to be pretty good today, there was even some sun out our window. We went down and had a quick bite to eat, then finished packing for our cab to come pick us up. Interesting fact here….Anchorage taxi’s are allowed to only carry at most 5 passengers. This wasn’t something I had found out ahead of time, but we were lucky because there are only 5 of us traveling. We had a terrific taxi driver, and made it relatively quickly to the train station. First thing we did is leave our luggage outside under a tent with a Princess representative. We would not see it again until it was delivered to our stateroom. Now, about this time, my husband was tired of me stealing his rain jacket, so as soon as we got checked in for our train, and handed our boarding pass, DH was off to the gift store. The first thing he found was a rain jacket for me. Needless to say, I have a new Alaska Railroad rain jacket. He was happy because he got his back. We hung out for awhile and then boarded the train by train car assignment.

When we got on board, our train car was pretty empty, so we had lots of room to stretch out and wander. The train followed the same highway we drove down the day before, but it was still really enjoyable to take in the scenery from the train. Somewhere along the route, the weather turned and it got very cold and was dumping rain. I was glad I had my rain jacket. By the time the train arrived at the ship, it was pouring!

IMG_1447.jpg

We got off the train and walked across the street to the cruise terminal. Check in was fairly easy. We filled out an “I haven’t been sick in the last couple of days form” and got in line to check in. All went very quickly. After checking in and getting our cards, we went thru security and then were allowed to board the ship.

This part is going to be about the princess ship…..skip forward if you don’t want to hear the cruise ship part.
As soon as we walked on board, we immediately got our pictures taken. I was a little surprised because immediately as we walked away from the picture stand, we were bombarded with crew members selling drink cards…now this definitely is different than Disney because you can go get a soda whenever you want. DH and Dad got a soda sticker, but my mom, DS and myself were fine with the coffee, tea, and water that they allowed you to get from Horizon Ct, that was open all the time. What was annoying is that the sales pitch didn’t end there, they were in the hallways and also up at the buffet place, for the first two days I felt everywhere I turned there was somebody there to sell a drink card. It was also pushed at the beginning of the welcome aboard show that night.
What was neat is that our stateroom was ready the second we were on board, so we went down and dropped off our stuff and checked out our rooms and headed up for buffet. We had a mini-suite on Dolphin deck, and I have to say that they were quite nice. Also, our room steward was probably the best we have ever had on any cruise. We headed up to horizon court buffet for lunch. It was a really nice area with lots of places to sit. The food stations were kinda spread out so there wasn’t really a “line” you just ventured around to where you wanted to go and grabbed what looked good. We ate all breakfasts and lunches here, it was a good buffet. After that we walked around the ship to get familiar with it and soon it was time for dinner. Due to the late onboard time and departure time, regular dining schedules were thrown off, so it was pretty much anytime open seating for dinner that night. We dressed and went to dinner. The food was extremely good on the Island Princess, we really enjoyed most meals. After dinner was lifeboat drill, then we set sail. Setting sail was a non event, there was no big sail away party or anything like Disney does, so we just watched from our balcony as we went out to sea.
DSCF4888.jpg

We went to the Welcome aboard show, where there was a lot of talk about the stuff offered followed by Kevin Hues, who was a really good comedian. His opening act was really good, and we made sure that we saw all of his shows onboard. It was back to the room and lights out. Tomorrow would be a day at sea followed by Hubbard Glacier in the afternoon.

Next up…..Day at Sea, Hubbard Glacier

Day 5 – July 6th
Sea Day, Formal Night, Hubbard Glacier

Woke up in the morning glad that I had my Bonine with me as the ship was rocking and rolling and had been all night. I was quite surprised at how much movement I felt on this ship. I was up before the boys in my cabin, so I got dressed and snuck over to my mom and dads cabin. Dad and I decided to use the coffee cards, and headed down to the Patisserie for Mocha’s and Coffee. This became an almost every morning thing as my boys like to sleep in. We brought our coffees for the whole family back, and watched the rain pouring down outside our stateroom onto our balcony. After awhile, we got dressed and headed up to horizon court for breakfast. After enjoying breakfast DS decided he wanted to go swimming. DH took DS to the swimming pool while my mom, dad and I did a scavenger hunt. We were to be entered into a drawing later that day if we got the whole card filled out. We had a good time doing it, and it helped us get familiar with the ship. After the scavenger hunt, I joined my DH by the pool while DS swam. I got some much needed reading in. I am not sure how Disney is going to do this, but I have to say it was very helpful to have a covered indoor pool. Even though it was cold and pouring down rain outside, swimming was still an option. We spent most of our day relaxing by the pool. We headed back to the cabin in time to go to the scavenger hunt drawing. Just as we were leaving to go, I got a massive bloody nose. I fought with it for awhile and then joined my mom and dad for the drawing. I had just sat down when they drew my name (can you say lucky on the timing!). I went up and drew a card and ended up receiving a free massage from the spa. We went back to our rooms as we were starting to go to Hubbard Glacier. The ice fields in the water we so beautiful, it is hard to describe.

DSCF4888.jpg

It was ice raining pretty hard here, so we just bundled up and stood on our balconies watching the ice in the water and listen as the calving glacier got closer. Now, tonight was formal night, and our first night being seated with our wait staff. Unfortunately there was some really bad timing here because just as we were touring around Hubbard Glacier, it was time to get ready and go to dinner for our first seating. My mom and dad went ahead and went to dinner, but I didn’t want to miss the glacier. So it wasn’t as enjoyable as this could have been as I felt rushed to get dressed and rushed to look at the glacier. We saw what we could and then ended up late at dinner with bad formal night pictures as I just didn’t want to take the time to really get dressed nice. After dinner, there was a magician show going on, so we headed down to the show. The ship, which had been rocking and rolling since we left, seemed to be getting worse. We weren’t at the show to long when DS felt queasy and needed to head back to the room. While the rest of the family watched the show, DS and I hung out in the room and watched Harry Potter. After DH returned to the room, we tried to head to bed, but the rolling of the boat seemed worse when trying to lie down. Eventually, we let DS sit up and watch TV on his side of the cabin until he fell asleep.

Next day Glacier Bay…

Looking forward to more of your report! I did this cruise in the Southbound direction 4 years ago, on the Coral Princess, sister ship to the Island Princess. I loved that ship, and completely loved the cruise!

I hope Glacier Bay was a better experience for you than Hubbard Glacier! That's really too bad they timed it that way!

Sayhello

Loving your report and just wanted to thank you for taking the time to share with us! I visited Alaska a few years ago with my sister and absolutely loved it and have been wanting to go back and do a cruise as well. We also went to Alyeska on our trip and I'm so jealous that ya'll saw snow! We were there around the same time but there was no snow. :sad1:

Thanks for your comments..yes Alaska is absolutley amazing. Next year I think we are going back in the summer and purusing the land portion. We fell in love with it up there, how can you not!

I did love every part of this vacation...Glacier Bay was amazing...I will post shortly.

Alright, here is the next one...lots of pics in this one, I hope you enjoy it...

Day 6 – July 7th
Glacier Bay

As usual I was the first one up and dressed again. I snuck over to my parents room to find that even my mom was still asleep. Mom hadn’t really enjoyed the rocking of the ship and now she was also queasy and didn’t sleep well. Dad and I snuck off for our morning coffee and came back and drank our cups while the rest of the family was sleeping. While heading toward Glacier Bay, we got our first look at Humpback Whales playing out in the water. As Dad and I were relaxing with coffee, the rest of the family started to wake up. Eventually after everybody woke up, nobody really was up for breakfast so we made a food run to horizon court and brought back some danishes to go with the coffee. Since there were two in our group feeling a little icky today, we decided that it would be a good in the cabin on the balcony, rest and relax day. It was beautiful outside, so most of the day was lounging around watching a taking pictures as we headed up to glacier bay.
Here is a pic cruising down towards the Glacier in Glacier Bay:
DSCF4952.jpg

Again, the scenery is amazing, pictures just don’t do it the justice it deserves. When we finally made it and were parked at the end of glacier bay, in front of us stood this huge wall of dirt….yep, apparently it was ice and a glacier, just really dirty.

I was trying to figure out what all the hype with glacier bay was when the ship started to spin. And then there it was , on the other side of the ship was Marjerie Glacier. It was very pretty, and there was a crazy guy in a sailboat sailing right next to the calving glacier.

We kept waiting for ice to break off and hit his boat, but luckily that never happened. We stayed there for awhile and then headed back out of Glacier Bay. Everybody was feeling a little better so we went ahead and went to dinner. After dinner we returned to our stateroom only to see hundreds of Humpback whales playing out in the water in the evening sun. It was such an amazing site, I couldn’t take my eyes off of it.

After the Whales, leaving glacier bay:

I stood on my balcony for hours watching and taking pictures of the whales and scenery. After awhile, we settled in and headed for bed. We were tired from the lack of sleep the night before and we had an early morning excursion the next morning. We did have a bit of time to squeeze some laundry in before bed : )

Next up….Skagway

Day 7 – July 8th
Skagway

I was up before everybody else…again….at least the rocking of the ship had slowed and everyone got a good nights rest. I opened the curtains to find sunshine…and a big decorated rock outside off our balcony. Note…It never got dark on our cruise. It was day most of the time. At first I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to sleep with the light, but everywhere we went, there was room darkening mini blinds and sleeping in daylight wasn’t a problem. Everyone was up this morning and we went up and caught a light breakfast at horizon court before getting off the ship and heading toward our excursion meeting place. We grabbed our keys, and our ID’s just in case needed, but on Princess, they take a picture of you that goes with your key card, so when you get back on the ship all you need is the key card, and not an ID. This is helpful when your hands are full to just dig out the card, and not have to go searching for your passport also. The other thing that was neat is that every time we got off the ship at a port, they had some sort of picture station set up, so they have pictures of you at every port of call…it was a neat keepsake.
Anyway, we got off the ship, had our picture taken and was on the dock looking for our tour meeting place. Disney has this one hands down. Disney is so easy to go on an excursion, Princess seemed like a jumble of people, in one place, looking for 1 person holding a sign with your tour number on it. It seemed pretty disorganized, but we found where we were supposed to be and headed for the train where we booked the 3.5 hour White Pass Railroad train ride to the summit thru the cruiseline. We got in the last train car which was lucky, because we were able to stand on the back of the train as it went up the mountain. The history and the scenery on this tour were fantastic. To see the train rail built on the side of the mountain, and then go across it and look down was really beautiful. DS got a little bored on the train, but I really enjoyed it.

After we returned to the dock, we went back on the ship for a quick lunch, and then back off again to explore the town of Skagway. It was sooo hot there it was about 80 degrees, but felt warmer. We loved wandering the shops in Skagway, and got an ice cream. When we were done, we headed back to the ship and let DS swim for awhile till it was time to get ready for dinner. After dinner mom and dad took DS up on deck, and right next to the boat, at the dock, was another whale playing right next to the ship.

Playing Whale:

They watched for awhile and then came to tell us about it. We grabbed our camera and went to watch, but by the time we got there, he was out playing away from the ship. We headed to the back of the boat, and watched as we pulled away from Skagway. We headed back to the room and called it a night.

Next day Juneau...

Day 8 – July 9
Juneau Day

Staying with the pattern, I was first one up and headed down for the morning coffee run with dad. We sat and drank coffee while everyone else got dressed. Headed up to buffet for breakfast again, then went back to our rooms to start packing for our excursion today. We had booked Taku lodge float plane excursion with island wings thru the cruiseline. We had a meeting time downstairs at 10:30, so we headed off the ship and walked down to the little stores that were there at the dock. We shopped for a bit, and then when we came back outside saw the island wings bus. DH and I walked down and met the rep, she had us write down our weight on our tickets, and then we got to go weight on the shuttle till the rest of our group showed up. Island wings had the down to a science. It was all very well organized. They drove us thru town to a little building and watched as our float plane landed and docked. They broke us into groups of 10 and we followed our pilot to the plane. DS was the first one to board, so he ended up getting to sit in the cockpit with the pilot.
DSCF5092.jpg

DSCF5097.jpg

This was the highlight of his trip. We flew over the top of several glaciers on our way to Taku lodge. This was one of the best ways to see the glaciers, it is amazing how big they are, and they go on for miles.

We landed in the water and taxied to the dock. We got off the dock and mulled around the area for awhile.

NOTE: The mosquitoes are thick here, make sure you wear your repellent. DS had fun smacking them off of DH who refused to put on repellent and was the only one in our group of five that walked away with mosquito bites….6 of them. Soon we headed to the lodge and a wonderful bbq salmon dinner. They claimed bears came to the lodge, but we never saw a bear. We even went on a little hike in the woods after lunch…still no bears, just bear droppings.

Our planes came back for us, and we made our way down to the dock to board for our flight back. This was the best excursion, Wings airways did a great job.
All aboard was at 3:30, so we had about an hour and a half to walk thru town back to the ship. We hit a few shops and made our way back. It was about 3:00 when we got back to the ship, and as we were getting ready to go thru the first set of people to get to the ship, dad realized my mom had taken his key card on the ship earlier with her. They held him on the pier while I went on board to get his card. By the time I made it to his room, grabbed his card, got back off the ship, he was gone. I asked if they let him on and the guy checking people in didn’t know what happened to him. So I left to get back on the ship. When I got to mom’s room, they said they let him on with his Drivers License and now he had left to go find me. I just waited in the room for him because I knew I would miss him again if I went looking for him. He showed up and we had a good laugh about him getting left in Juneau. We stood out on the deck for awhile and watched float planes land in the water in front of us while they boarded the rest of the passengers and got ready to leave. We got dressed for dinner as it was formal night and went to dinner. After dinner, Kevin Hues was doing Part 1 of his comedian show, we left DS with my mom and DH, my dad, and I headed to the theater to watch his show. He did such a good job, I am not sure I laughed that much in a long time. After the show we wandered around for awhile and then went back to our room to grab DS and go to bed. This was one of my favorite days so far.

Next day Ketchikan….

I am enjoying your Trip report. Keep it going. We're scheduled on the Disney's Alaska cruise in May 2011. Our first Alaska cruise, but third disney cruise.

Again thanks.

Hi jisom12, glad you are enjoying my report. I know you are going to love Alaska...wish I was going to be taking another Disney cruise soon, but haven't got one planned at the moment. I would really enjoy Disney in Alaska. I will try to post the rest tonight, I have it written, I just have to insert the pics into it as I post...we had so many pics, it is hard to pick which ones I want to post. Keep checking back....more to come very soon.

ohh brings back memories of my 2005 alaska cruise. Something to remind Dcl cruisers about, the misquitoes are HUGE and HUNGRY, repelent is a must. also dress in layers and expect rain.

Thank you for this trip report! I love the detail you provided. It will be helpful in planning our trip (and convincing my parents to go on the cruise) :goodvibes

Are there more days of the trip to come?

Thank you for posting this, it's great. We are going on the Disney Alaskan in May, and it's so hard to get info right now. Thanks again.

When I was in Alaska, the locals jokingly called the mosquitoes the "State bird" of Alaska! They are THAT huge!

Sorry guys, I didn't realize people were still reading. I will get on the ball and finish up this weekend. I still have Ketchikan, day at sea, and Vancouver to post.

Ok, moving on....Here is Ketchikan day...

Day 9 – July 10
Ketchikan

I woke up to another gray and misty morning. We headed down a channel towards Ketchikan. We were supposed to dock unit 9:30 a.m. and we had nothing planned for our day in Ketchikan.

Looking off our Balcony, we saw this guy on a bouy.

Again we opted for horizon buffet for breakfast, and headed off the ship. Right out front on the dock was a little building where you could go buy different excursions. We had seen the Duck tour parked out front and thought we would go ahead and try it. We went and purchased our tickets, and then walked around until it was time to head back over to the duck to go on our tour.

DSCF5205.jpg

DSCF5208.jpg

It was an hour and a half ride that took you 45 minutes on land, then you drove into the water for 45 minutes at sea. DH really liked this tour, but I thought it was kinda goofy. It was hard to see out of because the windows were so high up, and though they told us some about Ketchikan, there were a lot of silly jokes….I guess I should have expected that as I was on a Duck boat tour. It was fun to drive right off land and directly into the water, but it moved very slowly once in the water. We took the tour where we found out about Married mans trail and some other stuff, but if I were to do it again, I think I would have booked a different tour to see more of Ketchikan. By the time we were done it was about lunch time, so we went back on the ship to grab some lunch and drop off some souvenirs. Then it was back to go walk around. We made our way thru town and then down to creek street.

I loved walking by the shops that were built on docks, we saw the funicular, but we were starting to get tired, so we mailed some postcards and shopped around a bit before heading back to the ship. I think next time I would also take the funicular up, and walk back down married mans trail. I really did like the town of Ketchikan and would have enjoyed exploring it some more. It was dinner time again, so we dressed up and went to dinner. The ship pulled away as we were at dinner, and we watched as we left Ketchikan from a dinner window. It was funny, but as we were leaving the sun came out again. After dinner it was Kevin Hues show part 2…again hysterical. The boat was starting to rock again this night, so more Bonine and off to bed. Tomorrow was our last day on the ship, and it was a day at sea.

The trip is almost over next up day at sea before dismembarking.

Day 10 – July 11
At Sea

Ok, I tried my hardest to sleep in this morning, but no such luck…I just couldn’t do it. So up for coffee I went. This was my last day, and I still had 8 coffees on my drink card to finish up, that is a lot of Mocha’s to drink in one day. I very leisurely drank my coffee with my mom and dad, and waited for the curtains to open in my stateroom. The boys were extra sleepy today. The weather outside was really windy, and the boat was catching a lot of motion. After everyone was awake, we had our standard breakfast and then back to the stateroom to start packing our stuff up. It was nice to have a whole day at sea right at the end to leisurely make sure everything was together. We got most things packed away, then I took DS back to the swimming pool so he could get one last day of swimming in before we disembarked. I got to sit and read my book and relax. We were there for quite some time and then headed back to the stateroom. Since we had such a late breakfast, we let lunch pass us by. It was very scenic this day headed up to Vancouver, and I was really surprised at how close the ship was to the shore as it sailed up the waterway. A couple of times I noticed it swaying pretty hard to one side, I wasn’t sure if this is because the water was so rocky, or if it was because we were turning rather sharply. Anyway, we kept looking for Orca’s, but never did see anything. Later that day, we decided to go to the art auction, because on our last Disney cruise, my husband won the actually chart of our voyage, in fact he couldn’t get it till the morning we were docked and getting off the ship. It is hanging in our kitchen and is quite the talk piece, it is a great memory of our cruise. Anyway, there was one of the princess cruise hanging outside the buffet, and it was also to be auctioned off at the last art auction. We were thinking that you would get the actual navigation chart, like you do on Disney, but here they auctioned the one that was hanging, which obviously wasn’t the original, because they would have needed that to be navigating the ship. So, we watched them auction it off, and then went back to continue watching our journey towards Vancouver. We went to the dinner that night, and took our extra tips to the waiters, as they were pretty awesome. Now, here is where I will insert my rant about Princess tipping. Princess does auto tips, they charge each person in the stateroom 10.50 per day and take it out every night. Then they take it and distribute it among all the staff…now in my opinion, this method is awful! I had no idea how much the servers would be receiving of my auto tip payments, or the room steward, or ….the list goes on. At first I thought this would be ok, but when it came down to it, I had no idea how much to tip extra for these people that I felt were doing an extraordinary job. I always tip xtra for those people on Disney, but somehow it seems different when they are not getting the full amount…it was just weird to me. If princess was paying them less than what I expected I would have liked to have given more to make sure they got what I thought they deserved, if they were getting a higher amount from the already taken tips, I would have adjusted my extra tips accordingly. In my opinion this was a HUGE flaw on Princess’s part…
