Alaska on July 19th, 2011 "Where a good tan is hard to find"

Only 19 days for us & I still haven't pulled the luggage out yet.

This week we're preparing for one of our twin 18yo sons to leave the nest/fly the coup/bye bye gone. :sad1: This Sunday on the 26th he will be picked up @ our home by a Marines staff sgt, driven up to Denver where they will check him in. On Monday he flys to California for a 3 month Marines Boot Camp @ Camp Pendleton. He leaves as my little boy but will come back (albeit briefly) as a man who finally knows how to clean a toilet. :thumbsup2

I dread the day my boys leave....so I feel your pain mom.....which son is this? So thats how you get them to clean a toilet....:lmao:

I have yet to pull my luggage out also...but have put down yesterday all I still have to do....it helps when it is visual to see what still needs to get done. OUCH!:upsidedow

DW is already training DS7 to clean the toilets. :rotfl2:

Oh believe me I tried but that is one job that he just doesn't get from my training. I guess he is going to need someone in his face yelling at him & down on the floor in the you know what before he really gets it.

Now he's been doing his own laundry since he was 13 so I've been able to teach him some things over the years.

That is so great that he is enlisting, he sure will come back a different man!! Good luck saying goodbye!

You are so right Kim that he's going to come back a different man. It's great that he'll finally have focus & goals & I'll be so proud of him. Saying goodbye just doesn't seem real right now, but I know come Sunday it's going to hit me like a ton of bricks. We've also been told that when they come to pick him up we must have already said our goodbyes. So it's they knock on the door & boom he's gone. I think it's going to leave a sinking feeling it the pit of my stomach.

I guess it's kind of a blessing that I have this wonderful trip in the planning to somewhat divert my attention. Just think, Allen & I & all of you will be floating on a magnificent ship seeing some of the best sights we've ever seen, doing very enjoyable things, having fun, while Jeremy will be struggling, grunting, working his butt off, & be made to cry by his sargeant. Paybacks are Hell sometimes. :lmao: But seriously I do think it will be good for him & exactly what he needs & in return I will be doing alot of praying :grouphug: because I know it's only by God's grace & mercy that he's going to make it through!

This is Jeremy, the one who we didn't know if he was going to actually graduate till 48 hrs before graduation ceremonies. The one who never volunteers for housework when I ask, my ultimate couch potato that I love very dearly.

And you will be thinking about him every second of your trip :sad1: has he always wanted to go
into the Marines? And isn't he a twin? What is his brother going to do?

If it makes you feel any better my BFF son will be applying to the Navel Academy back east and if he gets in and can't see why he won't because he's all that and more...she won't see much of him at all for 5 years.....I think I would just fall apart if that was to be my son.....

Kudos to your son joining...it takes quit a man to serve our country....you can be very proud of him.....and I would shake his hand and say thank youihe were in fronton me:thumbsup2

Holy Shnikees! And I thought I had some rewards!

It was a lot of work ...lol...

Yep he's a twin, the other one is going to be going to community college here. So we'll still have him & the 17 yo around still. Well I am really surprised that I'm not falling apart at least not yet. I'm sure I won't be thinking of him every second of the trip especially when we're having the couples massage & in the hot tub on the veranda in the spa drinking sparkling wine & strawberries! I am proud of him & am looking forward to his boot camp graduation camp pendleton . . . . . . I have a DVC villa booked @ Disney's Grand Californian a few days before. Goin to sneak in a trip to Disneyland. :rotfl:

LOL - I wish!!! We don't even have a verandah stateroom. The hot tub on the verandah is is one of the spa villas that we get to use for about 20 min during our couples massage.

Ooh, I wanted to request our server, too! Can someone walk me through the process? Who do we call - our TA (DU) or DCL? And what/where is Wavebands again? Thanks!!

If you used a TA to book your reservation then that TA will need to contact DCL to add your request for a specific server. pixiedust: Here's to hoping your request is granted!

From the DCL website:
WaveBands, located on Deck 3, Forward in the Route 66 area on the Disney Wonder, is a stylish club that resembles the interior of a transistor radio. During the day, WaveBands provides entertainment and fun interactive activities for the entire family. At night, the club caters to adults only, offering dancing, games, karaoke and 2 full bars serving mixed drinks.

Does anyone have any good tips about Shutters. I'm sure we will be spending a bundle there :goodvibes

Can't believe how time flies ... It's less than one month away !!!

Hi All!

Boy, do I have a lot to catch up on... I missed the thirty day dance, I missed most of the requesting a favored server discussion, but most of all I missed yet another Pirate or Elizabeth Swan... curses, foiled again!

Sharon: Congrats on your son making such a brave and grown up decision. I am very proud of and grateful to every person who decides to join our Armed Forces and serve our country. :worship:

When my oldest DSS enlisted in the Army his dad and I were both quaking in our boots about what his future might entail but when all was said and done, it gave him opportunities he wouldn't ever have had otherwise (good and not so good) and it truly allowed him to spread his wings and take flight (literally and figuratively :-).

As for the server question, one of my traveling companions on our Alaska cruise did the most recent PC Repo and enjoyed her serving team so much that she requested them again. She was assured by DCL that our entire group (we are all linked) would indeed enjoy their assistance on this upcoming trip as well. She is traveling concierge so perhaps that has some sway and of course, as you more seasoned DCL travelers know far better than I do, what they tell you at DCL and what happens on the ship can indeed be two very different things.

Regarding the Thirty Day Dance... whilst you were all boogieing your brains out :cool1: the DH and I were off on our 8th anniversary Bye-Bye. Our actual anniversary is tomorrow. We headed off to the Owen's Valley to explore Bodie (the State Park and Ghost Town) and to hunt down additional cemeteries to add to our forthcoming California Cemetery Guide website.

We had a lovely weekend, the weather couldn't have been better, the views of Mount McKinley and the Sierra Nevada's couldn't have been better and, because of the elevation of Bodie (8370 feet) I got to do a bit of testing of our Alaska garb. Temperatures were in the 80's in Bishop but it was 52 degrees when we arrived at Bodie at around 11 AM. It warmed up to around 60 or so but I found that I was just fine wearing my new layering clothes. Yeah!

Of course I also discovered that I will need to get new shoes before we set sail. My Target brand Skecher's Shape-Up's knock offs gave their all on this one. And, since my hiking boots are decidedly not comfy (not sure if it is because they aren't broken in enough or if it is because they aren't quite right for my weird feet but the upshot is the same), it looks like I will need to look into getting replacements.

On another front, while I was composing this opus, I stopped for a second to go pop the laundry into the dryer only to discover that our garage door was wide open and our most adventurous, youngest (just about 1 year old), and decidedly indoor (though not by his choice :-) cat was nowhere to be found. Where we live (in the shadow of Mount Baldy) there are lots of critters that love the taste of tender kitties. Coyotes, Owls, Hawks, Mountain Lions and even the extremely occasional but still very threatening Bears have all been seen prowling about our neighborhood. Not to mention the fact that we live near two blind curves which prevent drivers zooming up our street from having much, if any advance notice as to what or who they may encounter in the street. So, my heart was pretty much in my throat.

Fortunately, Jasper (the cat) actually comes when he is called (amazing, I know...) and after a relatively short amount of bellowing on the entire family's part, he came running home. With the exception of having even grubbier than usual paws, none the worse for wear. We will all have to be even more careful to make sure that he doesn't repeat this little stunt.

As for cruise planning, I am starting my packing list "Officially". As someone who can tend toward the OCD end of the spectrum where trip planning is concerned but who also has been known to, after painstakingly listing every last article, alphabetically, leave critical components home (evening gown hanging on the outside of the hall closet door before our last Disney Cruise, anyone?). I tend to live and die by my packing list.

And, since I pack for both the DH and myself, and since this cruise has additional components which I didn't have on our last cruise (FE's), there is a whole lot to remember. I am confident that you can all relate...

Truth be told, since some of the things that we will be taking with us on the cruise won't be items that we will need before we depart, I may actually start putting things into the suitcases in the next day or so.

As for those cursed Pirates and Swans... I really need to be quicker on the draw here, either that or I need to donate the ones I have garnered to so worthy soul who will be able to put them to better use than I seem to be able to do. The little dears are getting bored hanging around with the same two or three of each other and are decidedly lonely for the others that have come before and since. :rotfl: Still, the race isn't over yet and an underdog could still pull out a stunning upset... or the horse could talk.

Take care all, help lots of people and have a "Wonder"ful day!

Hi!

Consider planning to purchase the photo CD. I hear tell it is $299, but it will have all the photos that the ships photographer's take of your family (including the "Lifestyle" - on the all white background and "Holiday" pics if you schedule either shoot). Any special borders or treatments that are added to the pictures after they have been shot will not be on the photos on the CD, however you can purchase the prints which will show those special effects at half price.

You can also purchase photo credits before you sail on the DCL website (under Gifts and amenities). I don't know if you get a break by purchasing them ahead of time. Oh, and they also take photos on some excursions so those may end up in your package as well.

If you do decide to get the CD, which you don't have to purchase ahead of time, or if you are even thinking about it, then my advice is to hit every photo op that you can get to so that you get the most bang for your buck.

Oh, and be sure that you scan the photo rounders to make sure that all your pictures wind up together and nothing gets missed.

I know that three hundred dollars is quite a large chunk of change to drop for pictures, but if you were to go to a photo studio you would easily spend that or more just for the sitting and additional money for prints.

And speaking of prints... if you do purchase either the CD or any other photos from DCL be sure you get a copy of their copyright release otherwise you could run into difficulties if you want to get duplicates done by a photo lab (even Costco, drug stores and the like ask for them).

I hope that helps. I will look forward to seeing what the even more seasoned travelers in our group have to add.

Take care, help lots of people and have a "Wonder"ful day!

I guess it doesn't matter if you call your TA or DCL. I wound up calling DCL directly last night, even though I booked with a TA. They added the server name to our reservations, so we'll see what happens.

If I remember correctly, when we get the dining tickets, the server name won't be on them, just a table number...correct? So, I guess I'll still need to go to Wavebands if I want to verify that the request was granted. Also, again if I remember correctly, we don't get the dining tickets until we get in the staterooms, so we can't check with Wavebands until after we're able to get in the room.

What we do have them do is take pictures with our camera also....that would be with the characters and professional photographers in the atrium.....the ones you can't do are the ones of your family when you are not all together.

:cool1: DOING THE FOUR WEEK DANCE :cool1:

Are you leaving early also? I forget who is heading out in 4 weeks ..I count 5 weeks till the cruise...
