Alaska 2020 Cruise

Hey all! We’re looking at cruising to Alaska next year and I’ve seen conflicting reports on weather. We were looking to go towards the end of May or middle of June. From what I’m finding it’s 50-60 degrees in May and 65ish in June - does this seem right? Is there a month you would recommend over another one?

Also, we’re looking into doing the Costco transition after we book, for the Costco Cash Card can you apply that to Disney gift cards and then use those to pay for your cruise?

June is definitely more likely to be warm than May, which is partly why May is also cheaper.

As for the costco cash card issue, no - because you don't get the card till 2-4 weeks after you sail.

We sailed the first week of June 2018 and it was chilly in Vancouver the day we left, but sunny and fairly warm upon our return. The times when we were at sea in Alaska and on deck with the wind blowing, it was very chilly. Nights were always chilly. Our port days were moderate: one was drizzly and cool, one was clear & cool, and one (Ketchikan, imagine that) was sunny and almost balmy.

I can't give exact temps as it was over a year ago, but I can say that you would have needed to pack layers to fully enjoy the outdoor time on that cruise. The temps varied a lot from the rare warm (60's to low 70's) to commonly chilly (low 50's plus a wind chill), largely based on what the variable daily weather in the region was doing, not just based on our latitude or the calendar.

We liked early June because the mountains were still snowcapped & that felt more like Alaska to us than fully green mountains would have. I'd go in May if our schedules allowed, as I'd love to see more snow and ice. We're Texans & rarely see that in person.

The only thing definite about Alaska weather is - if you don't like it, wait 10 minutes. Yes, the weather is extremely variable in Alaska at any time of year.

June may (or may not) be warmer than May. I've been in Alaska in May, June, July, and August. Hottest was one day in July. Coldest was one day in June.

Generally the weather has been in the mid 50s to mid 70s.

I’ve heard that may and June are good choices because there is typically less rain than in July/August, but that temps are cooler

We went the last week in May this year and had gorgeous weather. On glacier day everyone was up on deck without coats and it was sunny skies (so I'm guessing high 60s/low 70s). The other port days we only ended up needing a light jacket. It was chilly up on deck in the evenings. But have others have said, I think that it can really vary week to week. I would say pick the week that works best for your schedule because you never know what the weather will be.

Earlier is better because the snow on the mountains has melted less. Far more scenic.
