Hi all I have a question about insurance. Alamo made me get the added insurance because Florida does not except Ohio insurance which was an additional 70 dollars is this true or did the guy just add it on thanks KimOhio

I'm no expert by any means, but I think the guy was jerking you around. I would call my car insurance company and check AND I would check with the credit card company you used for the car to see if they offer insurance - apparently a lot do.

Like I said - I could be wrong...but I am interested in seeing what the experts here say!

Sounds like a lot of bilge water to me.

Check with your own insurance company to see if your policy covers you when you are driving a rental car, and when you are driving out of state. That's all that matters. And check to see what your deductable is when driving a rental, it may be different than when you're in your own car.

As long as your policy covers you when you're renting a car in Florida, you're covered, and you're entitled to refuse the insurance from Alamo.

Unfortunately KimOhio...Alamo jerks a lot of folks around...esp regarding insurance. You should have been covered without their help.

I'm sorry you had to deal with this.

Esmerelda <NOT an Alamo fan here...

Can I ask where you rented your car from with Alamo? I used the Dolphin counter and insurance was never even mentioned!! And I was ready for that issue to come up...sort of loaded for bear. But, it was never mentioned. I found Alamo, at the Dolphin anyway, very good to use.

goofy4tink,

I think (correct me if i'm thinking wrongly) that the Alamo on-resort is under less pressure to rent, and has a much lower rental 'turnover' - that is they are much quieter, and likely not expected to sell extra insurance as much. No doubt, they would happily sell you it if you asked!

The Alamo at International Airport is notorious for pushing extra insurance for no reason - likely a combination of staff incentives and high expectations from the parent company. They get rude when you decline and some use underhanded tactics like 'accidentally' printing off the agreement with insurance added, hoping you'll just sign without looking....

we rented at the airport then drop it off at the dolphin. He tried to get us to get personal insurance and everything else we told him no the only reason we signed up for the insurance he scared us and said we would have to pay everything out of pocket it the car got wrecked. I know it becuase I checked with my insurance company, but he said it did not matter in FL because they are a no fault insurance I am going to call alamo and check with them if not I will call the cc company and maybe they will take off the charge. Thanks guys

More than likely the only thing your insurance wouldn't have covered is the charge for loss of use of the vehicle but more than likely your credit card would cover this so they ripped you off.

They must work off commission when it comes to insurance...

That is the most loaded bucket of mouse poop I ever heard. I have rented a car with Alamo 2 times and declined ins. both times and I'm insured in ohio. and my ins co told me I was covered and if you want to know something else. I was put in situation where I had rental car and took it out of state from MI ( no fault State) to Ohio and was told my MI ins covered me in OH.

We are with State Farm in Ohio for 31 year now and they always tell us just to have one of cars sit at home unused and we are covered in our rental car. We always use a credit card that covers you by the credit card company also if you charge it.

I called alamo last night and they credited me the $66 dollars and apolized saying it was not their policy for that type of behavior they were quiet nice about it too thought I would have to fight to get the credit.

they cannot force anyone into buying the insurance, thy offer ir and you can decline, they may not accept your insurance if an accident happens, but it is still optional of wether or not you want to take it.

Thanks, that's kind of what I thought the situation was. Based on what I've seen reported here, I don't think I would ever use the Alamo counter at MCO, but wait until I got to WDW and pick up the car there.
