Alabama DVCers? -- Got 15?

Hi MScott,

We have a lot in common (except the Roll Tide part):sad2:
DH grew up in Savannah, TN (1hr north of Florence). We lived in Memphis for years and finally said "Enough!":scared1: We have been back in Shoals for almost 7 years :thumbsup2 . We're trying out DVC at Boardwalk Studio in April (almost to the 30 day mark!:cool1:) and are so excited to have Boardwalk view too :woohoo:

My dad has a lot of family in Savannah. He actually grew up around Walnut Grove, right at the state line, and my mom is from Central, which is 'on the way' to Savannah from Florence.

We miss Florence so much, but there just aren't any jobs there for us right now. My dad just got diagnosed with cancer, so we'll be home a lot more, and I think that's just going to make things worse!

I'll forgive you for not being a Bama fan...since my loyalties are split as well. I am a huge Alabama football fan, but during basketball season, I cheer for the Memphis Tigers. My car has UA AND U of M stuff all over it, I look schizophrenic!

Hey Misty! Good to see another Florence native on here! Just in case you don't recognize me, it's Amy K from Wilson c/o '92!

I love getting updates about this thread! I miss living in Alabama and you never know who you might bump in to on here! I hear ya on the job thing in Florence -- unless you want to work in a restaurant, your kind of out of luck. We have been living in Atlanta for almost 5 years but we usually go back to visit our families every 6 to 8 weeks.

Sorry to hear about your dad -- I will keep him in my prayers!

Very sorry to here about your dad. Hwy 72 gets very old driving back and forth:sad2: It was just our luck that we moved to Florence about the same time they finally :headache: got the 4 lane expansion finished.

Yes indeed... Memphis is a BIG difference from Walnut Grove and Central. ;) We visit my InLaws in Savannah fairly often. I don't think I could live there, but it is nice to visit. (have to be close to Target :goodvibes )

Good Luck to your Dad and your family!

Hey, Amy! I knew I couldn't be the only WHS grad smart enough to Dis!!

Glad to see you and Mark are doing well! We went to Florence this past weekend, and some of my girlfriends were saying how Florence basically closes at 9pm during the week and 11pm on weekends.

It's always going to be 'home' to me, and I would love to move back, but we simply won't absorb the paycuts we would have to take.

Thanks for your prayers for Daddy...he starts chemo on Monday and he is very positive right now. I hope that sustains him through treatment.

See you around these parts sometime soon!

Hey Alabama folks!

It is so wonderful that we have such a great and active Alabama thread!

If anybody has any new information about WDW or non-WDW trips taken using DVC, or hey even just cool trips taken from Alabama I'd love to hear about it.

We are expecting a Alabama DVCer to go to Destin and stay at Club Interwest using points sometime during Spring and bring back a trippie.

Finally, Spirit Airlines released some great spring airfares over the past few days through Atlanta. They had nickel and dime fares yesterday, but still have fares that are 5 and 10 cents per mile throughout the Spring. I tried every way that I could and still couldn't swing it. Why do I keep kicking myself about not buying APs? Park tickets were the deciding factor. :sad1:

Hey Mickey's Apprentice,

We are going to DLR in July for a 4 night stay at the Disneyland Hotel using our add-on developers points. One bonus - No $95 booking fee!!!

We are then going over to Costa Mesa for the National Juvenile Arthritis Conference (DD4 has Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis or JRA) for 3 days after that.

She doesn't know that we are going to where "Sleeping Judy" lives...

We'd love to have the details and a trippie afterwards. Are there good flights from BHM to LAX, etc?

BTW, I'm not that familiar with Sleeping Judy? :lmao: :lmao:

Have a great trip!

Hey, Alabama people-is anyone familiar with the Robert Trent Jones golf trail and specifically about booking it thru Fairways Golf? DH booked a trip thru them for the first week in May, and now he's not getting phone calls returned, nothing. He's got his flight booked on his own and may have to book all his hotels and tee times himself if they don't respond in another week or so. My question is this-at this late date, what are his chances of getting tee times at the RTJ golf couirses? What are some of the more/less popular courses? I think he was looking at the central Alabama ones mostly, as well as Cider Ridge and Limestone Springs, I think. If anyone can PM me with any info, I'd really appreciate it. He's really gettin nervous with the lack of response from Fairways Golf.

Actually, we aren't finding any deals at all on airfare either out of BHM or HSV (where we will be on the 4th). Everything is in the $400 pp range...

As to "Sleeping Judy", that is what our DD4 calls Sleeping Beauty, and it is so cute that we don't correct her much...

I sent you a PM.

Don't know anything about Fairways Golf, but you should be able to get onto any of the RTJ courses on fairly short notice in May. I would definitely play Capitol Hill, Greenville, and Grand National (Opelika), so Montgomery would be a good base. Don't bother with the Birmingham courses (Oxmoor Valley and Ross Bridge) on the trail. Ross Bridge, though they host a Senior PGA event, is way overrated for what you get. Silver Lakes between Anniston and Gadsden is nice and I also hear good things about the Florence courses.

If you are going to play in the Birmingham area I would concentrate on Limestone Springs, which you already have on your list, and Farm Links in Sylacauga, which is IMHO one of the best courses in the state. It's an all day type deal where $125 gets you unlimited golf for the day, your lunch, and all non-alcoholic beverages and snacks on the course.

If you can get to the Gulf, there are many good courses in the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area (Kiva Dunes, Peninsula, Craft Farms, Lost Key) that can easily fill up the better part of a week.

Lastly, if you know someone high up and can get on at Shoal Creek (private), that is the best course in the state (Golf Digest Top 100)...

Thanks for the info on Farm Links. Unlimited golf for the day-right up DH's alley! Grand National and Silver Lakes are two he mentioned wanting to play. He'll be so glad to hear that there's hope for him getting tee times. He's overseas now, so it'll be mid-April that he can make tee times for the first week in May. He was really nervous that he might not be able to get on the courses.

:cool1: We are here in Huntsville. Thanks for starting this!!!

Hey Alex's Mom.

I just listed you on page 1.

Have you heard that Allegiant airlines is stopping its HSV to MCO flight?

There's always Birmingham, Nashville, Atlanta, or I65 South, I guess.

I'll give a second vote for Farmlinks. It was built by Pursell Industries on the Pursell's personal property as a research and demonstration golf course. Pursell produces and sells fertilizer. There are no homes on the property so they used the best lay of the land for building the course. There is one par 3 hole that is a 5 story drop from tee to green. It is a unique golfing experience. The best course I've played anywhere.
