I haven't seen a thread about this, but I thought this was interesting. I'm not Mormon, but I would have been a little  if I was.

Sharpton Criticizes Romney, Romney Replies
By KATHERINE AMENTA -- WMDT 5/10/2007

Just weeks after Al Sharpton criticized Don Imus for his politically incorrect remarks, the tables have turned on Sharpton. During a debate on religion and politics with atheist author Christopher Hitchens, Sharpton made a comment about republican presidential hopeful, Mitt Romney. Romney's a Mormon.

Sharpton said, "As for the one Mormon running for office, those that really believe in God will defeat him anyway, so don't worry about that. That's a temporary situation."

Wednesday, Romney responded.

He said, "I don't know what exactly his intent was but his comment was a bigotry comment. It shows that bigotry still exists in this corner. I think that's the most unfortunate comment to make."

Sharpton says his remarks were taken out of context and he was actually trying to say that other believers would not vote for Romney for purely political reasons.

Hmmm. I think Sharpton made a politically incorrect remark. I think his statement definitely implies Romney and other Mormons do not believe in God and I don't think Sharpton or anyone else can make that judgement. Only an individual can assess whether or not they believe in God. It's too personal of a belief.

I heard about this this morning. Ed told me and my jaw dropped. It just confirms my dislike of Sharpton..That comment was way out of line..

Let's beat down sharpton now. Really, he has it coming to him. He's constantly making bad remarks and living to criticize everybody else. I'm as white as you come but if I wasn't I'd want to smack him for daring to speak up for people and lump me into it.

Al Sharpton has and always will be the biggest ****.
He probably turn it around and say he was forced to say it because he's suffered so much this past years. :rotfl:

Al Sharpton offended Mormons by saying those that 'really believe in God' won't vote for him. He implied that Mormons don't really believe in God which is kind of like saying Catholics aren't really christians. If someone said that about my faith, I'd be offended.

However, I believe that Romney will have a hard time holding on to the evangelical part of the republican vote simply due to the fact that the evangelical voting block voted for Bush in part because they perceived him to like minded. The fact that he identified himself as a "born again christian" was a big draw to many evangelicals. If that's the point Sharpton was trying to make he did it offensively.

I think the reason this hasn't gotten the right wingers all up in arms is because there is a huge elephant in the room they don't want to talk about and that is the views and beliefs of the religious right regarding the Mormon religion.

I am certainly offended but what else is new from Al Sharpton?

Of course you are, but Rush's racist song that he's playing on his radio program is just a joke, right?

For the record, they were both wrong, but if I had to make a call I'd say that Rush's scores higher on the vile-0-meter simply due to the fact that the ditto heads actually agree with him and don't quite get the fact that his whole reason for doing what he does is to make a pretty darn good living off inciting such hateful beliefs.

You won't find too many liberals who agree with what Sharpton said or think he should have said it.

.

You are right, It is just a joke. It is called satire, a parody, humor. Obama wasn't offended, why are you? Romney was offended and Sharpton wasn't joking.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Sharpton is a horse's behind, but given the Mormon church's incredibly racist recent history, I can sort of see where he's coming from.

IMO he's an idiot, and it was a very offensive comment, but I have actually seen basically the same thing posted here. Called them cult members as well.

I agree with peachgirl on how this will be ignored by leaders of the religious right. Hard to out something when you don't totally disagree with it.

Anytime Al Sharpton is involved in anything, I generally ignore it because I consider him to be a ******* of the highest degree.

Sharpton should know that if you want to "live by the sword" you better be prepared to "die by the sword."

Sharpton is doing some dancing over this, at least as per today's NY Times-trying to back away from the original statement.

It's funny, because last month I saw him on Oprah, and I got some respect for him for his stance on some of the lyrics in rap songs. He talked about how the language reduces respect for women and drags the community down. Then he turns around and does something like this.

Al Sharpton still thinks Tawana Brawley was telling the truth. I don't listen to anything he says.

It was a racist joke, but you think it's funny so all's well.

Obama chooses not to make a political issue of it while Romney does. Neither reaction changes what each incident is, but it does show what a class act Obama is. He doesn't want race to be the issue in his campaign no matter how many times he is attacked.

Perhaps a blackface minstrel show would be a fun evening of entertainment for you as well. After all, it's just a joke, a parody, humor..at least to some apparently.

And you can ignore the elephant too, but it's still there. The religious right agrees with Sharpton and in truth have even more offensive beliefs than he regarding the Mormon religion.

Sharpton and the religious right on the same page....it's definitely the end of the world as we know it!

I was wondering if anyone would post about this and if people would be up in arms about Al Sharpton's remark. It's a relief to see that people can recognize bigotry for what it is- whether they agree doctrinally or not with Mormonism.

I also happen to agree with Peachgirl. The religious right won't say anything and that just sickens me.

Bigotry, I'll give you bigotry. Just 30 years ago, mormans taught that individuals of African decent were cursed and doomed to hell. It wasn't until September 30, 1978, anyone that descended from Ham (Genesis 9:18) could not receive the priesthood of God, because Ham and his posterity were denied that right when Noah, his father, cursed him (Genesis 9:25).

In 1978, that 'curse' was removed and the priesthood was extended to all male worthy members.

Today and for many years, African Americans have been Mormons, but I guess all those prior to the lifted of the 'curse' went to hell.
