AKV social hour

We will be at AKV in 9 days .Today we received an email from DVC about a members only social hour on Mondays and Wednesdays. Has anyone attended this event? Also is it worth our time to plan on going? We have been to the Welcome Home Wednesdays at the Boardwalk but have not heard about this one.

It is an event where you must pre-register. It is held in a smallish room where there are really nice appetizers and basic non-alcholic drinks plus a rum-fruit alcohol punch. There are DVC hats there, and there are separate kids activities downstairs. It is about an hour long. There is a draw at the end for $200 or $300 gift card. In between the food and the draw the guide circulates and makes small talk. I think there are games, too. I went and I don't regret it, but it wasn't something I would go out of my way for.

What time is this event held? We will be there in 3.5 weeks. It sounds like something we may want to do.

I attended this last Wednesday (on Halloween). Frankly, except for the free food, I thought they could have done a better job. Our "mingling" consisted of writing down the name of our favorite Disney character, then other people asking questions, a la "What's My Line". I would have much preferred a more DVC-themed event. Maybe "Our members are from X# of states and countries, where are you all from?" "How many home resorts?" "How long have you been members?" Maybe some DVC trivia played. And at the end there was a single drawing for a $100 gift card. Maybe because I walked away empty handed, but I wish they'd had more prizes, and again DVC themed-maybe some DVC bags' towels, hats, pins, etc. But it was free food, including alcohol, free use of Simba's cubhouse for those who had little ones-you can't complain TOO much. But if you want to go, sign up early. I was at AKV in September, but the mingle was already full. And even on Halloween, they were turning away people who tried to sign up that afternoon.

My wife and I went Columbus day week....they had good appetizers and an assortment of drink choices...we also played the "Favorite Character Game"
...actually two groups of about 12 people....$100 dollar Gift cards drawing at both....I won one...THIS WAS THE BEST MINGLE EVER!!!! Really it was ok..but nothing to plan your day around! My Wife did say she enjoyed it more than the Welcome Home Wed @ the Dance Hall on Boardwalk and was glad to see no DeeVeeCee, but was disappointed no hats or such given out.

We got hats when we signed up. They were cute and are supposedly exclusive to those attending the event.

I do agree that trivia or facts about DVC would have been more interesting or even just chatting with other members, instead of the character game.

Is this something they're doing at each DVC resort or is it only AKV? And is this something they will do going forward or is this offered only during the timeframe they are not offering Welcome Home Wednesdays (which I believe is only the month of November)?

We went in Aug and I totally agree with you!

And at the end there was a single drawing for a $100 gift card.I think the guy who won the $100 gift card at our "mingling" of 10 people or so was the only one who found it worth the time!

There was wine offered at our mingling and a few nice appetizers. Did it once, no point in doing it again. They should have more prizes, instead of a $100 maybe a $50 and 2 $25 or additional give away stuff!

Can you just sign up when you are there? Or do you need to get an email like the OP described?

It is put on by DVD the marketing unit for DVC. AKV is the resort that they are actively selling so they are trying to put owners in a good mood to buy additional points.

Thanks for the info everyone. I think we will try it if nothing else to get a break from the parks. I cannot wait to get to the land of pixie dust and magic.

I received a card in the mail 3 weeks before heading to AKV giving the details of the "Mingling" and it said you could register with the front desk. We did so as we arrived, Monday's mingle was full so we opted for the Wednesday one!

They told me that technically you're supposed to sign up in person when you check in, but I went to a DVC kiosk in one of the parks beforehand (I was doing a split stay, and I was at BCV at the time) and they were able to register me.

I think it was 5:00 - 6:00 but they wanted uerr here at 4:45. You had to be there to be eligible to win the drawing.

You have to register in person, the email is just a reminder. Also you have to be staying at either Kidani or Jambo House.

I would not take time away from anything else to do it.
