Just got back from spending 8 nights at AKL in a Pool view room. I hope I don't come across too negative, my wife sometimes says that I do that but here it goes.

I thought the Lodge was a little too dark for my taste. Service was fine and timely. The only problem we had was at checkin. They tried to give us a room with bunkbeds and after spending only five minutes in the room we knew there was no way we could take 8 days of fighting with our two year old and her climbing up to the top bed. A trip to the front desk fixed that and we got a room with two queen size beds, but the room wasn't ready so we had to wait about 3 hours. A great lunch at the Rain Forest Cafe made it all worth while. Funny that the 1st person we spoke with at the front desk didn't ask us our preference knowing that we had a two year old. Oh well at least they fixed it.

I found the pool a little more crowded than I would have liked but that's really my problem to deal with. Not much of a people person but I had a few nice conversations down there. My kids loved it so that's really all that matters any way. The animals were great and there were plenty of places to view them if you didn't have a room that overlooked the savana.

We made the mistake of stopping in Cocoa Beach at a resort hotel. We got a two bedroom size room with a full kitchen and living room for two nights. It was great! So when we stayed in that tiny room at AKL it took a little away from the magic. So like I said the room was small for a family of five but worked out ok. I probably would have stayed in the room more if it were a lot bigger which probably would not have gone over too well with the wife and kids.

Didn't think too much of Universal but it was ok. At WDW I always make it a point to go on the Swiss Family Robinson tree house which drives my wife crazy. She just doesn't understand that the SFR movie was one of my favorites as a kid and that tree house has been there for many a year. I remember it, Tom Sawyer's Island and the Haunted Mansion very fondly when I was a kid. I can't tell you how many kids and some parents keep commenting about it being Tarzan's tree house but I just smiled since I knew the truth. We probably did more at MGM than we've done in the past it was pretty cool.

The bottom line is that we love Disney but another stay at AKL will probably not be in our plans for the for seeable future. I never figured what a problem it would be not to be able to have a straw and lid for a cup of coke. Forgot the sippy cup in Cocoa Beach and the little one still has not mastered the art of taking a drink out of a regular cup. Oh well, can't wait to get back to OKW and a larger room.

I was thinking about doing couple of night at AKL on our next trip :guilty: I may have to rethink my plan. Thanks for the trip report.

:rolleyes1

Yes.

Funny, we absolutely loved AKL.

We had a room that looked at the animals and it was truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Yes, the lodge was dark but that added to the ambience.

If you have been to VWL and liked it, I think you will like AKL.

If you are the type to say VWL is too dark, then forget about AKL.

Once again, different strokes........

Thanks for the AKL review. Did you use points for AKL?

We stayed at AKL shortly after it open. I am not an animal person at all, & I loved it there. We had a standard room, but we had several opportunites to see the animals & get photos. The pool was not crowded when we visited, but then again it was new & we were not there in the summer.

I agree that OKW is the way to go!!

Thanks for the review. As a family of 5 we like our space, but I think we'd like to try AKL as a "once in a lifetime" experience, and then get back to our spacious villas :flower:

Well let's say we got a deal. I had a reservation at OKW for the same time frame but someone had over 300 distressed points tied up in the concierge collection (hope I spelt that right) and I got 8 nights for $1,200.00. I just couldn't pass up that deal but kind of wish I had. No big deal, there's always next year :). It was my wife's choice to stay at AKL and she and kids enjoyed the resort very much so what I'm saying about the resort is only my opinion. Nice place, rooms too small for a family of 5 and too dark.

Yes, the ambience was there for sure! Everything about the place was dark, dark colors, dark trim, dimily lit hallways and rooms. I won't go so far as to say that I did not like the resort but the theme was just not for me. Having said that, it really is a beautiful place if you like the feel of a dark forest. I perfer a more open forest with plenty of meadows or even beaches and palm trees. Again all my own opinions and one last thought, I also did not care for the African Art. I'm not going to say that I don't like it, I just don't care for it one way or the other.

To all who are reading this thread, please do not form an opinion based on my comments. But if you are thinking of staying at AKL on a future trip and what I have said concerns you then maybe you should take a hour out of one of your days during your next trip and take a bus over to visit the place. There are plenty of spots to view the animals and you can judge for yourself. This way you can really make an informed opinion.

This is what we did when we stayed at Cocoa Beach. We drove down A1A to Vero Beach and walked around the resort. It was really nice and would be a place that I would like to vist for a few days or a week. Not sure about the wife and kids but it was more to my likeing than AKL.

Great Report! Thanks for sharing; we, too just returned from a 7 night vacation at Universal. We, too, was looking forward to home. After spending so much time at Universal, I was rethinking our trip to WDW next summer, but you were able to get my spirits back up. We have stayed at POR and CBR and were thing of staying at Coronado Springs this time, any suggestions?

When we went in Dec. 2004 (I know two trips in just 7 months :)) we had some friends and family stay at the Coronado Springs while we stayed at SSR so we got a chance to see the rooms. They're fine for a family of three or four but still it's basically a two bed hotel room. Depending on how large your group is and what accommidations you are comfortable with, I would suggest you look at renting DVC points if you are not a DVC member and stay at one of the DVC resorts. I like Old Key West but there are many others and you can usually get a week at half the cost of the rack rate. See the Rent/Trade board on this forum for more information:

PS I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about renting since I have been on both sides of the aisle. Send me a PM if you like...

Do a little more research before you cross AKL off your list. It is the favorite WDW resort of everyone in my family. Also, be sure to make some requests when it comes to room location. We had a very dark 5th floor standard view room on our first night in May. This was mostly due to the enclosed bottom portion of our balcony and the overhanging roof. Our savanna view for the remainder of our trip (AND on previous trips) was NOT dark at all. AKL is just so unique. I think the theming is outstanding!!

We stayed here right after it first opened and loved it...BUT I have to say, my big first impression was TOO DARK FOR ME. This was just a few months after it opened, and I remembered thinking, as this ages it will get really dreary looking because of the "darkness". Loved the room with the bunks ( i have 2 boys who it was age appropriate for) and loved the pool view, the pool and the restaurant. I agree 100 percent about the crowds..I am not a people person either and almost all of the Disney properties are just too crowded for me. My families number one is always Swan/Dolphin, which is totally different from AKL. But having said that, for a good enough price, I would go back! :earsgirl:
