Thanks so much for the replies!
I did book a standard, it was the only thing available at AKL at the AP rate. The trip was a spur of the moment surprise for my DD (she thinks I'm taking her along to a work convention in Ohio) - I just happened to see the AP rates online so I was glad to get anything. WL is our favorite, so I've been checking constantly for something to open up there, but it's booked solid. No big surprise, seeing as WL is so popular around Christmas. But, AKL is working out to not much more per night than a mod, so I'll take it even with a parking lot view!
We've stayed at POFQ and CBR and enjoyed both, but I'm looking forward to trying something new. I'm just not at all familiar with the rooms there, so I didn't know if it was something to consider. If construction isn't an issue, I may just leave it with no requests.
I just got back from a quick stayed booked at the AP rate - standard view. I asked nicely at check-in if any savanna view rooms were available (I left it open as to whether I would pay extra). The woman said they were pretty full, but she would check. Came back with a gentleman who typed in a few things and we had our savanna view at no extra cost. Yes, it was on the sunset savanna (Ostrich Trail) where you could see the construction cranes - my DD and I laughed that we saw animals every day - the cranes! Yes, the people pens were below us. But, we saw animals every day - giraffes, ostrich (only savanna where you can see them), an African Crowned crane, ankole cattle, the ridgeback hogs (who loved it there), etc. The giraffes came to nap over there and the crane stayed almost 100 percent of its time at the watering hole. We really enjoyed it more than some other savanna view rooms we had.
Oh, we were on the 3rd floor, close to the lobby too, room 3124. And, yes, if you had your sliding glass door open, you heard construction noise during the day but it wasn't bad.
Because of the construction, they aren't selling all the rooms on that side so just ask nicely and you could be very surprised!
