My husband and I have tooled around with the thought of staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. I thought I would get some of your thoughts on this resort. I have a few questions for you as well.
1. How is the transportation? Does it take forever to get everywhere?
2. Is it worth it to stay here if not booking a savannah view room?
3. Has anyone had a standard or water view room, and if so, how were the views?
4. Do you feel this would be a good resort for couples? (Its just my husband and I, no kids yet).
5. How is housekeeping, bell services, front desk staff? I have read some not so nice things about the staff.

Any other thoughts or opinions would be appreciated as well. I thank you in advance for your help!

You'll love it! I went last June/July with my SO,no kids. We absolutely LOVED it! Even in the summer(week before and week after the 4th) we had no issues with the transportation. We had a rental car,but hardly used it. As far as the food court,in our opinion, not very good. Kind of pricey but without kids, you can get by for sure. We had a standard room, and for us it was fine. The pool was awesome! Make sure you make PS for dinner at Boma or Jiko.
We're planning a return visit next summer!!

We have stayed at AKL, the Wilderness Campgroung Cabins, the Swan and The Coronado. Of those, the AKL is our favorite (we are returning for 8 nights in Sept/Oct). We have stayed in pool view and this time we are booked for a standard (parkinglot!). The savanah view is fabulous, but not essential to a great experience. The atmosphere is great, the food is the best at DW, the pool area is very good and there are a number of low key animal activities onsite (also very good concierge levell!).

The only soft spot is transportation. On our stays, the buses have run often and effeciently-- but you can't walk anywhere off resort. You always have to board a bus and ride. For great transportation options, I would choose the Swan (walk into Epcot, launch to MGM, bus to MK,AK).

We just got back and it is wonderful. The bus service was good. The we never waited more than 15 minutes for a bus the whole week. The only really long ride is to MK.
Definitely worth staying if not booking a Savannah view. We had a Standard view and it was very nice. Perfect resort for couples. Think strolling hand in hand through the Savannah or sitting in the hot tub together. Mousekeeping was very good too. Bellservice and front desk were friendly and efficient.

We stayed there is april and I think it is only ok. There are a lot of other resorts that I would rather have stayed at. We were really excited before going because our son is a huge animal LOVER but I thought things could have been better for the price.

1. How is the transportation? Does it take forever to get everywhere? The buses are pretty fast about coming but yes it does take a while to get to certain places.

2. Is it worth it to stay here if not booking a savannah view room? To me persoannly I don't think I would stay there without being in a savannah view room that was really the only good thing about the hotel.

3. Has anyone had a standard or water view room, and if so, how were the views? N/A

4. Do you feel this would be a good resort for couples? (Its just my husband and I, no kids yet).Yes it would probably be fine for couples.

5. How is housekeeping, bell services, front desk staff? I have read some not so nice things about the staff. The staff were all polite not overlly friendly or anything. We did have to change rooms three times to get one that was satisfactory to us and no one offered to help move all of our stuff which I think they should have.

We went last June for 7 nights and it was perfect. We loved everything about the place. The decor is great and the structure is impressive. I'll go through your questions-

1. How is the transportation? Does it take forever to get everywhere?

The buses where always around. We had a rental and loved having it. You can find great deals for your trip. I found it very easy to get around the world with the rental. I have heard many people say it is the best bus service of any of the resorts because it is dedicated only to AKL so they don't stop at any other resorts like some of the others do.

2. Is it worth it to stay here if not booking a savannah view room?

I booked a water view room and asked for a room with a patio. We loved it. We were near the exit out to the pool and a nice short walk to the Mara for breakfast. I liked the location. Also we were able to see the animals from many various places so we didn't feel like we missed out on anything.

3. Has anyone had a standard or water view room, and if so, how were the views?

Our water view room was on the ground floor and had a small little patio. Most of the foliage was grown up and dense enough you could see out real clear. It was nice and cool all day long in the shade. I'm not sure they should call these room water view anymore because most of the view is obstructed but we like the cozyness of it. And the location for getting to the pool and Mara food court. I have seen many pictures here on this sit of water views and they look really nice. I would try to ask not to be in the center area (I'm not sure what part exactly) because those rooms are above the restauraunt and you look down at the black roof. I would want to be off to on side of the pool or another.

4. Do you feel this would be a good resort for couples? (Its just my husband and I, no kids yet).

We went with our 2DD's but we saw many couples and the restaraunts and bar are very nice and a great place for romance.

5. How is housekeeping, bell services, front desk staff? I have read some not so nice things about the staff.

All of the staff were great. Everyone from the bellhop we met at our car door when we pulled in all the way through to the people in the gift shop who taught us alot about pin trading and even gave my DD's some special pins on our last day. The housekeeping people were great. We had special things done with our stuffed toys or towel animals made every day except one. We asked for extra pillows and a blanket to use as a shade around the bottom bunk and they were all delivered in quickly and with a smile. We had no negative things with the staff.

Any other thoughts or opinions would be appreciated as well. I thank you in advance for your help!

I have not stayed at any of the other resorts but I believe for the $ you get a great value. I think you will love this place.

Good luck, YO

DH and I (no kids yet either) went together for our first anniversary in March and loved it. He was more excited to stay there than I was but I loved it as much as he did.

1. We only took the bus to MK and back but we only waited a minute or 2 and we there in about 15 minutes. The con is the resort only offers buses and you need to take one to go anywhere else. But the resort offers a lot.

2. I don't know. We stayed in a savannah room and loved it. The resort has a lot of places to view the animals if you're not in a savannah room.

3. N/A

4. Yes!

5. The person checking us in was great and so were some other people we dealt with, but I can't say I was thrilled with the rest of the staff. One person at the front desk gave us some incorrect information about buses. The staff at Jiko was awful, but the staff at Boma was fine (not as nice as normal though). Mousekeeping was good (no towel animals though).

Although we disliked Jiko and some of the staff, it wasn't enough to make us dislike the resort. We loved it. AKL offers a lot and was great. Try it and if you don't like it you don't have to stay again. Try the night vision goggles. Hope this helps.

Just out of curiosity, what was so bad that you'd have to change your room three times?

AKL is our favourite resort... the staff, housekeeping etc have been wonderful to our experience.

I have have never booked a poolview or std view room so I can't answer your question there, however I have read that many people recieve upgrades as there are far more savanna view rooms than standard or pool.

There are many places to see the animals from if you do not have a view from your room.

Boma and Jiko are excellent restaurants and although there are lots of families I think this hotel would be perfect for an adult couple.

Thank you for all of your thoughts. I think we will go ahead and plan a trip to this resort. I love African Art, so I am very excited to see this resort. We have never stopped there on any of our trips. :wizard: :teeth: :wizard:

After our May trip, AKL remains our favorite resort. It is just so unique. I can't wait to take my in-laws with us in Oct. To answer some of your questions:
1. We found the bus transportation to be as good (sometimes better) as the other resorts. Still, you must allow a considerable amount of time to make connections for meals at other resorts. (This is the same for most other resorts.) Having a car when we took the kids in May was a definite plus. However, dh and I did just fine without last fall, managing to eat at WL and O'Hana with no difficulty.
2. & 3. My dh thinks a non-savanna room is fine. There ARE plenty of places around the resort to view the animals. This resort is so incredibly well-themed, and we really spend very little time in our room. Still, I was less than impressed with the dark standard view (translation=view of the cars at they left the covered area out front) room we had on the 5th floor on our 1st night. I would request ANYTHING other than 5th floor!! Fortunately, we moved to a savanna view room for the remainder of our trip. I LOVE the savanna view. The kids were less impressed with seeing the animals from our room than I thought they would be. We've never stayed pool-view, so I can't comment much on that. I do think it would be nice, since the pool area is so well-themed.
4. My dh and I spent our anniversary at AKL last year. You will see plenty of couples AND families. I did notice during our stay in May that all of the rooms around us were occupied by families with young children. I wondered if they intentionally grouped us this way???
5. With only a few minor exceptions, we have found the staff at AKL to be outstanding. Last fall, we raved about this after our stay. During our May visit, I noted that the CM who checked us in was pure business. She did her job but provided no "magic," so I really shouldn't complain. I was irritated by a CM who answered the phone one of the times I called to see if our room on our 2nd day was ready. I was extremely friendly and polite, but he was clearly irritated with me for calling...and I had been told at the front desk to call and check!!! It didn't help that our room wasn't ready until after 4. Housekeeping did a fantastic job on our room, even leaving intricate towel animals on 3 days. (No towel animals last Oct.) However, I don't like how the housekeeping carts and dirty dishes/trays are left in the hallways all over AKL. I don't remember seeing this in the past. It really detracts from the "show." All the other CM's, including the staff at Boma, have been absolutely great, taking time to chat with our little ones and asking about our stay.

As you can tell, we love AKL and can't wait to return.

We had a great stay at AKL. We had a savanah room, so I can't answer how pool or standard views are. I can tell you that there are plenty of look-out spots to view the animals. They even have telescopes set out.
The bus service was excellent. We only had to wait longer than 5 minutes one time (for Downtown Disney), and that trip took almost 30 minutes to get there. But for all other destinations, it was maybe 10 minutes.
This hotel has a great atmosphere, great restaurants. Lots of quiet little romantic areas to enjoy the scenery.
Housekeeping was very good. They cleaned our room by 12pm every day! I do have to say that the hotel staff were not very friendly though. It's not that they were rude, but they just weren't friendly. Example, they didn't say hello to us unless we said hello to them.
All in all, I loved AKL and would definitely stay again! :flower:

We absolutely love AKL, it's our favorite resort. Here are my feelings on your questions:

1. How is the transportation? Does it take forever to get everywhere?

Nope, in fact to me this is one of the plusses of staying here - it has it's own dedicated buses. I hated staying at resorts where you have to sit on a hot crowded bus that's stopping at 2 or 3 other reorts first.

2. Is it worth it to stay here if not booking a savannah view room?

I think it is, just for the atmosphere.

3. Has anyone had a standard or water view room, and if so, how were the views?

Every time we've booked a standard view, we've been upgraded to a savannah view. Not that it will definitely happen to you, but there aren't that many standards, so you may get lucky.

4. Do you feel this would be a good resort for couples? (Its just my husband and I, no kids yet).

I think so, especially dining at Jiko, and even Boma. We found it very romantic when the kids were off doing there thing at the pool just finding one of the lookoout balconies that have comfy rocking chairs and just enjoying each other and the animals.

5. How is housekeeping, bell services, front desk staff? I have read some not so nice things about the staff.

We didn't have any problems with housekeeping or bell services. The front desk staff was nice and efficient, but not gushingly friendly. But they upgraded us, so why would I complain! The other CMs there were fantastic about talking about where they're from, answering questions about the animals, etc.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

1. How is the transportation? Does it take forever to get everywhere? ... The transportation is fine, if you have nothing else with which to compare it. We had our car, but we used the bus service for the first few days. While it was slow and could use improvements (they could have more buses waiting for the crowds after Wishes at MK each night, for instance), I would say that overall, it is not bad at all. After the first few days, we had to drive somewhere, and found that it was actually more convenient with our car. So after that, we just drove to the parks. Again, because we had our car and were lucky enough to receive parking privileges, so we could park close to the park entrances, it was easier for us to drive. If you had to rely solely on park transportation, however, it is not a bad deal at all.

2. Is it worth it to stay here if not booking a savannah view room? ... Yes. We stayed in a standard-view room in May. Giraffe Trail, fifth floor, overlooking the front of the building. There was a clump of tress right outside our room, so we had a view of treetops; no parking lot or asphalt views for us. Our balcony was open-railing, and we still found it pleasant to sit outside most evenings, even with no animals to watch. Savannah view would have been at least $80 more per night, and we stayed eight nights, and I just could not justify the extra $700-plus (including tax) charge, especially since there are so many places to view animals around the hotel.

3. Has anyone had a standard or water view room, and if so, how were the views? ... Please see above. Again, the animals outside a savannah-view room, IMO, is simply an added luxury. It's not like our room was missing a toilet or a bed or another necessity. We did not "miss" anything at all without the savannah view. You just need to determine whether the higher rate is worth it for you. For some people, yes, but for us, no. To each his own!

4. Do you feel this would be a good resort for couples? (Its just my husband and I, no kids yet). ... Yes, we saw plenty of couples there, along with families with kids. I would say it's a lovely place for any sort of family, whether they have children or not.

5. How is housekeeping, bell services, front desk staff? I have read some not so nice things about the staff. ... The person who checked us in was professional, but not friendly or eager to offer up information. One woman at the guest services desk was very nice, while another was just cordial, but not overly friendly. Mouskeeping was great -- we received no towel animals, but we did not expect to get any. They did arrange our girls' stuffed animals in fun "situations" most days. They never vacuumed the room, however; I noticed crumbs sitting around for days. I had mentioned that we were celebrating my daughter's 3rd birthday while we were there, but we did not receive a card or anything. (Note: If you are celebrating something and would like to receive a "signed" card, I would not only mention it while making ressies, but also mention something at check-in, just to be safe.) The CMs who were around answering questions about animals were very friendly, except for one woman from S Africa who gave me lip because she thought I asked a dumb question (I wanted to know how close the climate in FL was to the climate of the animals' natural habits in Africa). I told her that it's because of these "dumb" questions that she has a job. :teeth:

All in all, it was a nice trip. We would not stay there again, simply because we like to try different resorts. And honestly, if we had to pay rack rate ($239 per night during regular season for a standard-view room), it would NOT have been worth it at all, IMO. But you are paying for the Disney experience, along with the room and its amenities, and since that you can't experience the AKL anywhere else in this country, then it was a very worthwhile experience.

1. How is the transportation? Does it take forever to get everywhere?[/COLOR] We did not experience the "forever get there" feeling. It is remarkably close to MK (more so that everyone thinks).
2. Is it worth it to stay here if not booking a savannah view room? We had a savanahh room, but a reg room is fine too. If you want animals, you can go to the observation decks for viewing.
3. Has anyone had a standard or water view room, and if so, how were the views?
4. Do you feel this would be a good resort for couples? (Its just my husband and I, no kids yet). Yes, Jiko is romantic and has great drinks for an intimate dining experience. The food and service is *****(5 stars).
5. How is housekeeping, bell services, front desk staff? I have read some not so nice things about the staff.
Never encountered a problem. Everyone was excellent.

Any other thoughts or opinions would be appreciated as well. I thank you in advance for your help!

I've answered your questions above. Go and have a magical time.

The general store and it's artifacts are wonderful. The pool and pool area are tops and from the bar you can see animals!!!!

We stayed for a week in April. Thus far, this is our favorite Disney resort. (Admittedly, we haven't stayed at the full gamut, but really enjoyed AKL!)

We did have a rental car, but did ride the bus to MK for early entry, and the bus from DD back to the resort. We found the bus transportation great, and we never waited longer than 5 minutes. It's nice not to share buses, and to have just the one stop.

We booked a standard view room, and that is what we got. We were initially bummed we didn't get one of those free upgrades everyone on the DIS always seems to talk about, but as the resort was 90% full the weekend we checked in, we were thrilled to get our other room requests! (Which were non-smoking, king bed, on 3rd or 4th floor close to the lobby on Ostrich Trail). We stayed on the Ostrich Trail in room 3125. Although the view of the parking lot was admittedly not ideal, we're not in the room that much anyway, so it didn't matter in the long run. There are lots of animal viewing opportunities all throughout the resort. We liked our room because it was very convenient to everything - you sometimes hear about those savannah rooms being a hike. We definitely got our money's worth out of the refillable mugs!

I did make the requests I did for our standard view room so as not to be on the side of the resort near the buses. I have heard that some of the standard view rooms near the bus stop can be a bit noisy with people walking by all the time.

We found this resort great for couples! It was just my DH and me - no kids yet, as well. We were celebrating his 30th b-day, and everyone was very friendly, and several people from Casey, our front desk CM, to the chef at Boma, went out of their way to make our time there special!

Some people find the resort a bit "dark", but I love dark wood, and it does kind of lend itself to the romantic feeling. Plus, the smell of the resort - it sounds corny, but it is so unique and exotic - I wish I could bottle it.

I must admit - AKL was DH's choice. I gave him the resort pick since it was his b-day trip. However, I was won over in short order, and even though we want to sample all the WDW resorts that interest us, I know we will be back (and often) to AKL!! HTH!

1. How is the transportation? Does it take forever to get everywhere?
Pretty Good, but it does take much longer to go anywhere else on property with the exception of The Animal Kingdom.
2. Is it worth it to stay here if not booking a savannah view room?
Hard to say. Depends on how much time you plan on spending at the resort. We had a standard room, but were given a pool view room. We found it much easier to view the animals from the trails.
3. Has anyone had a standard or water view room, and if so, how were the views?
Our view was ok. We did see the roofs of the buildings which did kind of take away from the view, but I guess it was better than one of the bus stop rooms.
4. Do you feel this would be a good resort for couples? (Its just my husband and I, no kids yet).
Well it depends. The atmosphere is romantic, but we found AKL overrun with small children and families. Since the resort doesn't have much outdoor public space it is hard to get away from other people unless you are in your hotel room.
5. How is housekeeping, bell services, front desk staff? I have read some not so nice things about the staff.
Our problems with our stay revolved around housekeeping and bell services. We had a housekeeper throw out something I'd bought and the receipts and instruction manual that went with it. (It was not in the garbage) Over the course of the week we found our room increasingly dirty. Like finding garbage shoved down behind the night table. Newspapers and dust bunnies shoved into the side of the tv unit. Stuff smeared all over the blankets. No remote. One night one of my pillows was gone. Kept us up till 3Am on our arrival promising a fridge delivery. It grew very frustrating after several days of this. I hope our experience was an isolated incident. It really put us off staying there again.
