I have taken many trips over the years using my DVC membership and have always enjoyed my accommodations, which usually is my home resort of VWL. This past summer, we decided to take a shot at booking AKL concierge for our stay 1/6 to 1/11. I called the about 2 days after concierge level was available to all DVC members and was astonished to get my booking for the entire trip. This stay was so memorable compared to others.
We arrived Sunday at 9pm. The valet greeted us and I said I would take our 2 bags myself since I knew the room would be available. The valet realized a few seconds later that we were Killamanjaro Club and would have no parts of us carrying our own bags. He passed them to a bell person who gave us a welcome packet with all sorts of info and escorted us up to the 6th floor concierge level.
The bell person took our bags to the room as we sat down at the desk for our check in. Later, when we walked in the room, lights were on, the bed was turned down with robes laid out and mints on the pillow and the TV remote tucked under the sheets. But at check-in, the CM gave us a brochure and explained what foods would be out in the lounge at certain times of day. He was very friendly and offered to make ADRs and ticket purchases, but we declined and went to the room, which we were told was a Savanna view. We were shocked to get one at 9:30pm at night.
We walked in the room and it took me 15 minutes to realize it was a HA unit. The differences were subtle and very usable for us. The kitchen countertops were lower, but we did not cook once. We used the fridge for bottles of water and that was it. The shower was walk-in and wide. We loved it. The only downside of the shower was the showerhead was a bit too low, but 5 minute showers were not going to ruin the rest of our day. Here are some pics:
This was room 6202. Do not hesitate to take this room because it is HA. The view offsets it. We had great animal views from the room. The last pic shows a feeding spot that the animals go to frequently.
Service on the club level was flawless. I read of inattentive CMs. We were completely pampered from the CMs at the conceirge desk, the lounge attendants and mousekeeping with daily room cleanings, towel animals and nightly turndown service.
The new valet service is incredible. You cannot tell the difference between them and the way it was before. It may actually be better.
We thoroughly enjoyed the lounge. I often got Evian throughout the day as well as fresh iced tea. The continental breakfast was enough for us. The 5pm appetizers with beer and wine was our favorite part. And I loved having an Amarula and decaf to finish off my night before bed.
I reiterate. Try this. We love AKL as much as VWL. We will be back here soon.
