I have taken many trips over the years using my DVC membership and have always enjoyed my accommodations, which usually is my home resort of VWL. This past summer, we decided to take a shot at booking AKL concierge for our stay 1/6 to 1/11. I called the about 2 days after concierge level was available to all DVC members and was astonished to get my booking for the entire trip. This stay was so memorable compared to others.

We arrived Sunday at 9pm. The valet greeted us and I said I would take our 2 bags myself since I knew the room would be available. The valet realized a few seconds later that we were Killamanjaro Club and would have no parts of us carrying our own bags. He passed them to a bell person who gave us a welcome packet with all sorts of info and escorted us up to the 6th floor concierge level.

The bell person took our bags to the room as we sat down at the desk for our check in. Later, when we walked in the room, lights were on, the bed was turned down with robes laid out and mints on the pillow and the TV remote tucked under the sheets. But at check-in, the CM gave us a brochure and explained what foods would be out in the lounge at certain times of day. He was very friendly and offered to make ADRs and ticket purchases, but we declined and went to the room, which we were told was a Savanna view. We were shocked to get one at 9:30pm at night.

We walked in the room and it took me 15 minutes to realize it was a HA unit. The differences were subtle and very usable for us. The kitchen countertops were lower, but we did not cook once. We used the fridge for bottles of water and that was it. The shower was walk-in and wide. We loved it. The only downside of the shower was the showerhead was a bit too low, but 5 minute showers were not going to ruin the rest of our day. Here are some pics:

This was room 6202. Do not hesitate to take this room because it is HA. The view offsets it. We had great animal views from the room. The last pic shows a feeding spot that the animals go to frequently.

Service on the club level was flawless. I read of inattentive CMs. We were completely pampered from the CMs at the conceirge desk, the lounge attendants and mousekeeping with daily room cleanings, towel animals and nightly turndown service.

The new valet service is incredible. You cannot tell the difference between them and the way it was before. It may actually be better.

We thoroughly enjoyed the lounge. I often got Evian throughout the day as well as fresh iced tea. The continental breakfast was enough for us. The 5pm appetizers with beer and wine was our favorite part. And I loved having an Amarula and decaf to finish off my night before bed.

I reiterate. Try this. We love AKL as much as VWL. We will be back here soon.

I have a 2 brm from Aril 18-27 in the club level at AKV I can not wait do you have any pictures of the Club and the offering on it??

If you mean the food, no pics. Breakfast had cereal, oatmeal and an african oatmeal, bagels, plenty of fresh fruit like melons, bananas, berries, muffins, scones, 3 different juices and yogurt.

During the day, coffee, tea, bottled water, iced tea and lemonade are always available, plus cookies and some other munchies. At 5, they put out beer and wine, hot appetizers which rotate every couple of days. We had small spare ribs, stuffed pastry puffs, various cheeses with crackers and hummus also, caprese salad, marinated olivesand more I can't remember.

After 8pm, they put out cordials like cognac, Baileys, Amarula, and Grand Marnier to enjoy. You can ask for beer and wine any time if it is not out. The put out mini desserts too.

I will mention that we normally stock up our fridge with water, beer, wine and some snacks to get us by during our stay. With what they offer, we did not even go to the store. I did not even use the coffee maker, since I could just walk out and get a fresh cup.

Hey, neighbor! My DH and I will be there in a studio April 16-21. We've stayed concierge before though so we already know it is great.

:thumbsup2 \

Great report and great pics!

This is the room we had over our Christmas stay!

Im glad you liked it, I thought there should have been a tub in the unit.

It was just DW and myself, no kids. We would have no use for the tub. And DW has used the whirlpool tubs at other resorts maybe 3 times in 8 years. I prefer the large stand up shower personally.

It's great to hear your report! We added on at AKV and I want to try a concierge villa on a future trip. My DH wasn't sure what the big deal was about.....I'll show him your post! It's nice to have the option of a concierge room. Did you take advantage of any of the special safaris??

Thanks for the report neighbor!

We probably should have tried one of the safaris, but we declined. After staying there and seeing how much time the animals spend at the savannas, I would try the one that tours the AKL savannas, which I believe is the sunset. I would love to see that and dinner at Jiko isn't so bad either. We ate there twice. You have to try the short ribs, they are incredible.

I loved staying concierge at BC & WL in the past and was going to miss it (concierge) with joining DVC. Glad to hear to good things about AKV concierge, I'm looking forward to trying it :)

Thanks for the review! It's good to hear that you enjoyed concierge level, and that the HA access unit wasn't really super noticeable. I would miss the tub a bit, but the large shower is nice. We've got a 1BR concierge villa booked for this December, and we're really excited about it!

Looks VERY nice!

One thing: I saw pics of the walk in shower...was there no jacuzzi tub because the room was HA? Or was the tub/shower seperate?

No problem with water all over the floor from the shower? That's the only thing I don't like about HA rooms at some hotels. Otherwise, I'm with you. I much prefer a large shower to the whirlpool.

What a lovely report.

Looks great.

There was no tub in the unit. It really did not bother us. As I said, DW has used it 3 times in 8 years and 12 trips.

The water in the shower went right down the drain in the shower. A trickle or two may have run out, but nothing that a 2 second swipe with a towel did not fix.

Does anyone know of recommend tipping guidelines for the concierge staff?

I must confess, I did not think about tipping outside the usual CMs. I took great care of mousekeeping and of course bell staff and valets(many times, many many times). I only used the staff and the concierge desk for check in, park tickets and 2 ADRs. Should I have tipped them? Man I am embarrased being that I am a bartender and work for tips.

Supposedly it is not a tipped position. I've read in the past that they're not supposed to accept cash tips unless pressed and even then it is pooled. Some people have reported giving concierge staff small gifts. I know we gave a small box of chocolates one Christmas morning although not at AKL.

I suppose we should start asking at AKV and find out the true skinny.

dizfanz, thanks so much for posting. We'll be in an accessible 2BR in May and so I think it's safe to assume we'll be in your room and the lockoff studio that connects to it. I was nervous after Liferbabe's:goodvibes report but feel much better now. The wide open kitchen will work well for us. The view of the animals looks like fun. Thanks for all the pictures.
