Ak will be open to 8pm a couple of the days we'll be there at the end of August. Will this be late enough to see some of AK in the dark? Googling sunset times says that it will set around 7:45 that week. Does this mean thats when the sun will start to set or when it's totally dark? I would love to be able to see some of AK in the dark!

The sun will be going down, but it won't be dark at that time.

The time of sunset is when the sun drops below the horizon. It is not the same thing as when it is "dark". This page may help...or further confuse the issue. ;)

As noted above, there is the period of twilight between sunset (when the top rim of the sun drops below the horizon) and full darkness. The length of twilight varies due to several factors, including atmospheric conditions such as cloud cover. On your AK day it definitely won't be dark at 8pm.

You can try to get a dinner reservation in AK as late as possible. That way, by the time you exit the park, it would be way after the park closing time, and AK would be all dark.

We did that a couple times in March and we love it. We got to walk out the park when it is literally empty and took a few night time pics. It is amazing.

We booked the latest possible reservation at Yak & Yeti last August in the hopes of seeing AK in the dark, but even though we lingered over dinner, it was still just dusky when we left. I don't think it's possible to be in AK when it's "dark" in the summer unless it's a later than usual close.

I was hoping the extended hours to 8pm would be a later enough that usual close, but I figured it still wouldn't be enough.

Thanks anyways guys!

AK in the dark is unusual and an experience and is why I recommend evening EMH hours during those times of year that will get you a ride on EE in the dark, totally worth it.

You could try booking Harambi Nights. Not sure it goes into August - but check. It starts Saturday nights at 7:00 pm.

AK doesn't have evening EMH anymore. It seems like the only way to see AK in the dark is to visit at a time in winter or spring when sunset is earlier but the hours are extended.

AK doesn't have evening EMH, but during deep winter if they stay open until 6pm or later, it's often completely dark before closing time.

March 2013 we got a double dip of AK in darkness. Sunday March 3 AK remained open until 8pm for some reason. It was a cold day for Florida, completely dark by 630pm, and virtually empty for the last 90 minutes.

Then on Monday March 11, AK had an EHM opening at 7am. This was the day after daylight saving time began, and still completely dark at opening. It was great riding Everest while the sun was rising about 730am.

If you can luck out and get to AK in the dark, I highly recommend it.

There is nothing like EE in the dark!!! Total winner, as is the rest of the park, when you see all the "secret" lighting! DInoland is way cute!!!

Sounds like there's a bit of "Kingdom Keeper" fun to be had! :)

Disney After Dark ;)
