AK Boneyard?

Can anyone out there give me an idea as to what to expect at the "boneyard" in Animal Kingdom. I have two kids 2 and 5 who are nuts about dinosaurs, and love playgrounds, so I am thinking this will be a big hit. However, how much time should I expect to be there? Is this something they will come out of filthy? What about supervision? Are adults not allowed in? Any info would be appreciated!! Thank you!

Our kids love this area. It's hard to say how much time to allow. It all depends on how much fun they are having. We have stayed 45min. before we had to get the kids to do something else. They have never come out dirty. The dig site isn't sand, I can't explain what it is made of. They may be a little sweaty from running around, but that's it. Also, the dig site is in the shade, so it's nice to sit in there in the afternoon. Have fun!

My DH took our DD16months to the Boneyard while I took dd8 and ds5 on Dinosaur and he was able to stay with her. They only stayed in the playground part but she loved it. When we were finished with the bigger rides my dd8 and ds5 just had to play too. We didn't take the bridge over to the digging part but I would probably plan on spending some time here. It seemed like a lot of fun. Since I didn't spend much time there myself I didn't notice if kids were getting dirty from the dig. I am sure someone else will be able to help you on that. A must do for my DS8 last two trips. He loves it. He's a bit tall for his age, so a few tighter squeezes for him, but still had fun and I enjoyed the rest. I have to beg him to leave, so time is how much you are willing to give them.

The dinosaur bones aren't in sand, it is a substance that looks like tiny pebbles. It is very easy to brush off of your children. My 3 usually spend about an hour there. We have to make them get out.

Same with my 9 year old, i have to drag her out of this and the honey I shrunk the kids playground at MGM. Now there is a rumor of a Hundred Acre Woods playground in Fantasyland, i'm doomed.

I believe a CM told me that the "sand" was called Texas grit. It come off very easily, and doesn't leave kids dirty. Adults can easily access the area.

I kind of wondered about this, but I finally tried it on my last solo trip. No problem! I guess that with all the people running around-big and little-it's just naturally assumed some little one's with you. And when you first walk in past the CM (that was my biggest fear-what if I had to explain to the CM when I walked in alone, that in my "quest" to see everything at WDW, I just wanted to see it)? But, fortunately, I guess the CM figured the rest of my family was in there somewhere, and I might have stopped off for a restroom break, drink, or ride. And I gotta say, all I could think of when I saw the Boneyard was "Boy, wouldn't our kids have loved it when they were younger!" It looked like so much fun.

I had my 2 nephews in the Boneyard in 2000, they were aged 9 and 10 at the time. They absolutely loved it and it gave us a nice rest in the shade while they played. It like palaeonontology and they could brush the 'sand' off the dinosaur bones, the bones are fixed into the ground. As the boneyard was quite busy after a little while they gave up on the bones and started burying each other up to their necks. This was quite difficult as any little movement made the 'sand' fall off unlike real sand. It just falls off, does not stick at all. I took a tiny bit of the sand (naughty and have it in my album with the photos, its just a teaspoon full really, at the time I put it into an empty film canister.

Another parent here who had to drag my kids out of there!!! The girls had a blast "digging " up the bones! They didn't get dirty at all.

Depends on the kids. When ours were small they spent a LOT of time there and we had to drag them away.

We just did this a couple weeks ago with our boys-ages 5, 3 and 11 months. They could have spent endless hours in there, especially the dig site! As already posted, the dig area is little pebble-like stuff and it's not nearly as messy as sand. We let our boys take their shoes off, as most of the other parents did. They did not get dirty at all, and I am the type who would definitely notice that. I'd say save atleast 30 minutes to let them play. We went there twice over our 12 night trip for about 30 minutes each time (in addition to time spent in the play area!) Great fun for them, and a chance for dh and I to sit and rest.

Thumbs up for the Boneyard. My DD9 loves it, she can't walk by without begging to go in. My only complaint is that there are not many benches for weary parents to sit on. Other than Dinosaur and the ice cream place, there is not much else in Dinoland that I like.

This place is great for kids that need to lose some energy and are in a stroller all day. The only thing is to keep a eye on your kids. All the kids start looking alike and there are tunnels that are very hard for adults to get into. I have 3 kids and me and DH were scattered everywhere to keep a eye on them. Other than that it is a good place again.

One thing I really like about the boneyard is that there is only one way in/out.
I stay at the exit while my husband goes in to find DD9 when we are ready to leave.

I wouldn't think so. My son looks two years older than his 8 years and he did it.
