Airtran question

Well, I guess it is, and not industry-wide - the last time I flew (it's been a while!) the regs for the airline we used stated that you could carry on a piece of carry on luggage, a purse, and a personal item. Or something like that. From what I gather on the Airtran website, now it's only 2 items? Meaning, using my carry on luggage, I will have to consolidate my purse & my personal item?

Yes, two items only. You are allowed one carry on that must go in the overhead bin wheels first. You are then allowed one personal item that must fit completely under the seat in front of you. If you have a purse it must go inside one of those two items.

Well dang. I'm beginning to feel like Robin Williams in the movie Toys, when the rooms get smaller and smaller. We're being allowed less and less.

Yes, only two bags. I take a 21inch wheeled carry on and then a Vera Bradley laptop bag. I do carry a smaller purse with all my IDs and etc in it, but I stuff it in the Vera. Better to have all that stuff together than have it roaming around in Vera.

And actually AirTran and SW are more liberal with carryons. Comparing the requirements for Delta carryons is even smaller. Mine I would have to check if I flew Delta!

Hey, some airlines (Spirit), the only free item you are allowed is one personal item that fits under the seat. If you put anything in the overhead, you are charged.

Last time I flew Airtran-- the weight had to be a total of 40 pounds. I was over by 5.
so be careful. and NO liquids or gels in that carry on either

Liquids and gels are allowed up to 3.4 oz and fit into a quart size bag.

they have to be in the bag---not the carry on bag. the quart bag needs to be carried seperatly

You have to take the quart size bag with the liquids & gels out of your carryon to be scanned at security. Then you can put it back in, it does not have to be separate after security.

I just make sure there is enough room in one of my bags to shove my purse inside. And that is the bag that goes under the seat in front of me. No way am I having it out of my reach.

I have this great lightweight nylon bag that I use to take everything down to the pool. When I fly, I use it for my travel papers,book, magazines etc, etc, etc,. I also stuff my purse in there for the flight. Works great! Fits under the seat and is easy to carry.

We flew down a couple of weeks ago. With taking off shoes, piling coats, laptop and whatever into the bins at security, we both forgot to take our 3-1-1 bags out of our carry ons. Neither of us had a problem or were rechecked! It was nice.

When traveling the less the better. I go down to the smallest practical purse I have. And try to put it into the carryon bag that is going underneath the seat. I try at all costs to not use the overheard bins. I'd rather pay a luggage fee.

And don't be surprised that after everyone has boarded they start asking people to check their carry ons. The problem has become, that because airlines are charging so much for checked luggage more and more people are taking the maximum they can as carry ons, thus taking up so much room that there isn't enough room for everyone's carry ons. If they start asking people to volunteer to check their carry ons, they will not charge you.

Thanks so much for your concern. It has been a while - maybe in 2008 or 2009? It was when Spirit still flew direct to Orlando from Atlanta. Once I scored 9¢ airfare, another time $9 airfare. Spirit is a bare bones provider, but it was awesome!

We normally drive, but I scored $90 round trip airfare and my annual pass is burning a hole in my pocket. I will finally see the Castle lights!

On the other hand, I haven't rented a car, except locally when getting my car serviced, since floppy disks were actually floppy! No worries, using ME this time, as usual.

Thanks everybody! I have my baggie ready, and I've measured my carry-on and my larger bag (that I measured, too!), and I have a small baggalini that I can wear several different ways that I use at WDW and can stuff into my large bag when the time comes. I'm not bringing a laptop, but I am bringing my regular old Kindle and my smartphone - do I need to do anything special with that? And I'll wear easy on/off shoes . . .

I'm packing light as far as clothes go, but for the trip home I'm concerned about including any presents I might buy in my luggage and going over the weight limit. I may just have to deal with the cost of shipping a box home. It irks me!

With it being just me (kids, I'm looking at you!) I can get by with so much less. I don't mind flying, but geez, I still remember when flying was a treat, not something to endure.

Actually the first time u do all carryons is the hardest. After that first trip the next will be less stressful. You gain all the tools and expierence and you won't go back to checking bags again.
I do it not to save money.. but for the piece of mind not to have to worry about lost damaged luggage!
I went from a huge suitcase at 45 lbs for a week at disney and now all in a carryon and laptop bag. If I can do it.. any one can!
