Airtran A+ Rewards Business Class Upgrade question

Thanks, Dan! I called AirTran for clarification of this "voucher" and the lady did tell me not to wait until the 24 hour mark but to call at midnight.

I do have a couple more questions about upgrading, though.

DH will be upgrading on points. Does anyone have experience with upgrading some people with points and other people on cash? Can they generally upgrade everyone in one call?

We paid to choose our seats in coach. If we upgrade will they apply those funds to the upgrade fee immediately, or no?

We used a gift card to pay our seat selection fees, and we have $22 left on it. Is there any reason we wouldn't be able to apply that balance to our upgrade fees?

Thanks for any insight! Last year we just upgraded when we checked in online, paid the fee with the credit card, and that was that. This year the upgrade seems much more complicated.

When we used our a+ vouchers to upgrade they were only good 24 hours in advance, not when the flight was booked.
You have to call to use them at the 24 hour mark. If I remember correctly I called a few hours before the 24 hour mark and they let me upgrade using the rewards.

So I usually call Thurs. at 12:00 AM for a flight leaving Friday. Even though the flight doesn't leave till 7:00AM.

In 2009, I used 4 credits from my account to upgrade my ticket from DTW-MCO. I was also allowed to redeem my DD7's 4 credits for a voucher to upgrade my friend. I also redeemed 4 credits from DD5's account to upgrade myself on the way home. The credits were expiring within a week so it was a nice surprise that they let me use them to upgrade my friend too.

Again, this was in 2009 so I don't know if it is still possible.

I would like to know about the bolded as well. I have an upgrade voucher I would like to use for myself, and pay for my DD9 to upgrade as well, but I don't want to use my voucher if an upgrade is not available for her. Can you do both at the same time with the same call?

When I phoned AirTran yesterday the agent I spoke with said she personally would allow me to do it, but she couldn't guarantee that other agents would allow it. I was hoping to have some actual accounts of whether or not it is generally allowed or generally not. All 3 of us are on the same reservation.

For us, we would probably go ahead and upgrade my husband so he can check 2 of our bags for free. If DS and I can buy upgrades at the 24 hour mark, great, if not, well, it is what it is.

Well, I hope I get lucky after midnight tonight and whoever I speak to is willing to do it for me! I am alone with DD9 and don't want to be split up from her. If they can upgrade me with my voucher and let me pay to upgrade her when I call, great. If not we will stay where we are. I will probably check again when we get to the airport when we check our bags if they can't over the phone.

With points, I know you can do the midnight call. If not on points, do the 24 hours before flight.
