I will be taking my first flight next week, I was wondering Will the X-ray effect my credit card? Also my brother-in-law flew last week, he said his buttonfly jeans set off the metal detector, will regular zippers on jeans set it off?

Your credit cards will be fine. Zippers are fine.

If your brother's jeans tripped the detector, I wonder what he had inside his jeans. LOL

That is absolutely the first time I have ever heard that explanation.

Watch what kind of shoes you wear. I was at the airport in November and was wearing dress shoes, innocent looking enough I thought. They set off the metal detector, I ended up having to get the full body wanding (including pat down by a female officer because of the metal buttons on my top). They took my shoes, then showed me on a separate scanner that they had metal in the bottom.

The brother had button front jeans, not a zipper.

I set off the metal detector last February. The only metal I had on were two barettes, a watch face and the buckles on my sandals.

Shoes are a problem. If they have ANY metal in them they will set the thing off. (Maybe they put metal detectors under your feet now) Also, my large hair barrett would probably set it off.

My best advice is to STRIP! If it has metal on it take it off! Remove your shoes unless you are 100% sure they have no metal including the forms inside (LOTS of shoes have metal on the bottom), remove your costume jewerly including hair decorations, remove your belt. When getting dressed avoid wearing denim shirts or other shirts with metal closures. If your jacket has a zipper take it off!

They make you take off coats & some jackets. If you have anything small in the pockets, I would take it out and put it into a bag or a bin they supply rather than risk it slipping out & getting lost.

Also, watch if you have alot of change in your wallet or purse. My purse got pulled once in Orlando because I had accumulated alot of change in my wallet and they could not see through it on the x-ray.

Going through security at Bradley in Hartford my tag watch and italian charm bracelet set off the scanner. They are stainless steel. I was pulled from the line, had to take my shoes off (no metal shanks, just had to take them off) and be wanded. No big deal, except I was traveling alone with my 7 year old DD, who was not alowed to come into the search area with me. I could see her but she was a little too far away for my liking. So, on the trip back, we stripped the metal, shoe charms from her (I would have wigged if they had to search her....wigging just thinking about it!) and put my watch and b.let in the bucket. I was a little concerned about letting my watch go alone too, LOL. We have been through alot together!
Oh, another thing, those of you who bring quarters for penny presses, watch those rolled coins, the screeners don't like to see that on the scanner either!

Thanks for the advice, I have never flown and would like everything to go smoothly. What about your cash, should I just leave it in my pocket or in my purse? If I was pulled out for a secondary seach(I heard these are also done at random) It would scare me to be out of sight from my belongings.

As I have said before, just put everything in a zip-lock baggie. I wear no jewelry when I travel...just my rings and watch. I always take off my shoes. My coat goes thru with my handbag. I always keep my roll of quarters in that baggie. If the screeners can see thru the bag they are happy. Even my change goes in there!! I just do it before hand. I do have to say that this is a lot easier when I fly in August! Flying in Dec. is a real pain!!

Just wear loafers and put them in the bin before you go through; if you are not wearing your shoes, they cannot set off the detector. Traveling in jeans isn't a good idea, anyway, they are not especially comfortable to sit in for long periods.

Keep a ziploc in your carryon's outer pocket, and while you are in the security line, put your watch and the contents of your pockets into the ziploc, and put that in your carryon. One thing that you SHOULD keep in an easily accessible pocket, though, is your license, you will be asked for it at least twice. (Put all your things back where they belong once you reach the gate area; you especially don't want to risk losing your license en route.)

For any of you that have one out there make certain to not go through the detectors with a money clip. I didn't think about it because mine is covered with leather, but I forgot about the magnet that keeps it closed.

I set the darn thing off and couldn't imagine why. As soon as I pulled the money clip out the security agent told me what happened.
