I refuse to let anyone or anything destroy or limit how I live my life. Not only does this have psychological repercussions, I believe it also helps those who seek to change our way of life. I will not yield and give them the victory. You either believe your fate is already chosen, you accept fate as it happens and move on the best way you can or you give up and allow your fate to be determined by someone else. As for me...I'll be on a plane with my family headed as scheduled for Disney in November. I've increased my 401K and recently invested in more stock. Everything that makes us America needs our support. From those who have suffered tragedy to our economy, our military and our country. Retreat or persue. My basic philospy is, I don't worry about things I can't control and I strive to improve the things that I can.
As a country we have become complacent. The time to change is now. We control our destiny. Each one of us is responsible for the outcome. We are to blame for our shortcomings.
Anyway, having gotten that off my chest...what is the wait times when checking in at the airports.

Large airports are seeing very long delays because of the changes in security yesterday. DIA officials say plan on arriving 4 hours early.

Smaller airports probably are not seeing as long delays; call the airport to be sure.

it depends on the time of your flight. if its during peak hours of travel(mainly businessmen hours) then it will be a long wait. for instance here in pit they just started a new check thru security procedure to get thru security and its close to a 2 hr wait except for very early in the am or late at night.

I've been hearing that the airports have been nearly empty (certainly my experience two weeks ago). I'm trying to square this with horrendous wait times.

Has flying volume picked up to near-normal again? What's causing such extreme delays? Is it at the check-in desk or at the security checkpoint?

I flew out of Detroit Metro on the 18th to MCO, arrived at the airport at the suggested 3 hours early and got right thru, it was 7:30 am, we had a 10:30 flight.
When we left orlando we had a 11:15 flight and arrived at the ariport at 8:30, again no lines and got right thru, both flights were on time in fact both arrived at destinations early. Actually other than more visable security and had to show ticket and ID to get thru to gate nothing was too different.

Can't figure out the rhyme or reason for this! Sometimes it is taking 3 hrs, sometimes you are getting right through!. The flights are picking up- in fact the flights I am trying to take in 2 weeks to Orlando are already full.

As firefighter mickey stated, right now at DIA, they are recommending 3-4 hrs. They have to hire more security, and they are almost handchecking EVERY bag- so I guess it depends which airport you are flying out of!

Now this is clever - I read today that DIA has implemented an express lane (so to speak) at the security check point. If you have no carryons, or only a small carryon like a purse or briefcase (not a laptop computer though), you can use the express lane. This coupled with people asking you to remove all your change and such from pockets before you get to the detector has done a good job of speeding things up some.

I flew from St Louis Lambert Field last Friday evening. My flight left at 5:25 PM. I arrived at the airport at 3 PM. I got in line immediately to get a boarding pass. I got to the window at 3:45 PM. Then they hand checked all my luggage and wiped it for traces of explosives for another 5-10 minutes. Then I got in line for the security check. It took 40 minutes to get to the security check-in. They wiped my computer for traces of explosives. It took about 1.75 hours to get from the drop off area to the gate.

It was quicker leaving from my home airport on Monday morning, but it is a smaller airport. They still hand checked all my luggage, including my purse and computer, and wiped them for traces of explosives. They scanned my body after I walked through two security gates. They said it was a random check. Every government employee I have talked to has gotten this higher level of check. Didn't make a difference if it was an electronic ticket or paper ticket.
