Airmiles Armchair Chatter

Currently sitting in the emergency department. First step is a new set of X-rays. The nurse said after that it’s likely that they will order an ultrasound but that could take 2 weeks to get an appointment.

So yesterday’s adventure….
To try and be brief. Everyone but the TSA at MCO are butt holes (trying to keep it PG …insert stronger word). In a nutshell, people were rude, unpleasant and just plain mean. DD was repeatedly yelled at by the westjet employee that took her through to the gate. The woman did not speak English and was angry that DD does not speak Spanish. Same woman crashed the wheelchair twice. TSA were awesome and could not have been nicer. Worked with her to accommodate what her abilities are and aren’t. They helped with her bags and electronics. Even told off the Westjet woman. A lot happened and there were many moments that DD was left to struggle on her own with crutches and luggage. Even once at the gate she was left in a bad position. It blows my mind that no one stopped to even ask if she needed help.

Ugh that's awful. So many airline stories of people with disabilities being highly mistreated by staff. If you have it in you, you could file a complaint with Westjet first, and if their response is insufficient, the US Department of Transportation or the Canadian Transportation Agency. I think your DD is deserving of some kind of compensation for this, and at the very least, it would place the event on the record.

I do intend to write a letter to Westjet for sure. I need to cool off about it first. The lack of basic compassion for another person is just so infuriating. NO ONE should be made to feel like they are being judged or they are a bother, especially in a time of need. The whole story is pretty long. A couple things happened at the port but at least there she had no concerns about being helped, her friends were with her and the woman that deals with crew departure made changes on the fly to get DD what she needed. From the second the van stopped at the curb at MCO things went downhill....the driver had been told to take her to the counter, he said he didn't have time and just left her at the curb. Mean while this guy had been pulled from one of the other ships that was not in port that day, so what was it he had to be doing?

After a day in emerg, DD was set up to go back on Tuesday to see an orthopedic surgeon. They did the xrays and that looked ok on primary exam but they were going to be sent to the radiologist for a closer look. LOL....the doctor had an accent and DD did not fully understand what he said. He said he wanted to immobilize her knee but she somehow thought that he was going to brake it. The look on her face....

What are you and your families doing to soften the blow if economic times ahead may be difficult?

I have been stock piling my preferred Laundry soap
because it was a great price at Food Basics....$2.99 ...regular $8.99 I have about 9 months worth.

A lesson learned.
I paid off all my credit cards and am going cash/debit when possible.
I remember in the 80's my Zellers credit card was so high (over 5,000) and I thought I'd never pay it off. The interest rate on our home was over 17% and we had a line of credit ---- the new home we moved into laundry machines broke within the first month.

Not spending my Tax return this year and keeping it as a emergency fund.

Please share.

I'm pretty frugal as a rule. Much like you, if I see a great deal I stockpile. Hubby has learned to live with it. We just purchased a new car and paid cash, part of which was our tax return so no saving that. No way was I going to pay 4.99% on a car loan.
I use my credit cards for everything but when I get home I immediately pay them off. I always round the payment off to the nearest $5. That way I have extra money on the card when something unexpected comes in, like my yearly travel insurance which is no longer inexpensive.

I remember the early 80's. Mortgage rates went to over 20%. Lots of people were losing their homes, it was a sad time. If you had money to invest you could get 18% return but most were just trying to keep their houses. Our mortgage was at 10% and we managed to get through those years without having to renew, thank Heavens.

With all that said, I feel having this group will help us through any economic times we may have. The information shared is invaluable and we seem to have become more a family than a group of strangers. I appreciate each and every one here. I hope we continue to share our good times and our bad. I hope we continue to stand together and as a very wonderful member of this group always says, Hugs!

We're pretty frugal but for my cruising, and I have 4 booked in the next two years. All are 3-6 weeks long and expensive, but I save religiously to be able to afford them. I don't know how much longer we'll be able to cruise, so it is a priority to me.

I use my credit cards for everything but when I get home I immediately pay them off.
I do the same. Maybe I'll do your trick and start rounding up. :)
Before these threads, I used to visit the No Buy (January...February...March etc) threads on the Budget board.
I actually tidied my freezer today. I definitely do not need to buy any meat for a couple of months! The pantry is pretty well stocked as well. I can't wait until the spring markets open with some fresh fruits and vegetables.

I have decided to purchase only what is needed. No more purchasing something I could use down the road just to get the AM. Eg. My son needs a paper shredder. Perfect, I can use that Airmileshops offer and get 100AM easy. The shredder was only $70 (on sale) and try as I might I couldn't bring myself to find $30 worth of other things I really don't need right now just to get $10 worth of AM. Like I said the other day, I'll take the $10 (100AM) I would have received and just put that into my holiday savings. Over all I'll be $20 ahead.

Groceries is an area however where I will stock up on things that come up on sale. We have a freezer full of well priced meat and frozen fruits and vegetables and a our pantry is well stocked with basics.

One last thing I'm doing to soften the blow of higher prices is going back to basics of making food at home (cutting back on using ultra-processed quick food). Making my own jams when the fruit is in season. Thinking about making my own pickles this year. Baking muffins etc. I've started channelling my great depression raised mother again and am simplifying our lives.

Since the TP crisis of 2020 I've had a stock pile of a lot of things. We actually put in some industrial shelving down in the basement storage room. Early last fall I decided that it was silly to have so much in reserve. I started just using and not replenishing. In the last 4-5 weeks I've started stocking up again. I've probably got a years worth of laundry products. LOL...I drink a lot of carbonated water so I've now got 5 cases of that plus the 2-3 cases that are open in the garage (AKA the winter cooler) and I've got 5 cases of Diet Coke plus 3 cases of caffeine free. That's a lot of pop but in my defence is was really on sale.

We had a lot of years when the kids were young that money was very tight. Competitive dance cost a lot more than hockey. I have always shopped for only what is on sale. If it's chicken this week, well guess what, that's what we are eating. Even now I very rarely buy something that is at full price. I price match a lot to save going to multiple store. When DH became border line diabetic and had to change his diet our weekly grocery costs went up about 40%. Turns out that carbs are cheap. I've decided that this week and next I'm going to really bump up my stock pile and then leave it be. I need to fill my freezer too.
If times get really tough...I can share the Tofu recipes :rotfl:

For my business, I've just ordered a lot of products and I think I'm going to call and double my order. My most expensive products come from the US and there are no alternatives. If the prices goes up 25% I have no choice but to eat that cost.

In general, we are pretty fortunate to be in a position that I don't think we will be affected. Our house will be paid off in a year. I need to buy a car right now but with DH being in the auto industry we have access to the best used cars. I have not had a brand new car since the 90's. My current suv is a 2006 and I've had it for 14 years. So I've decided that I'm getting the dream car this time and I've got 90% of the cash for it, so I'm ok with financing that last 10%. Work wise, nothing will change for me. For DH we figure that he will be fine as people should look to fixing the cars they have rather than buying new ones. The only possible hitch on his end is that his company just started into a multimillion dollar reno of their facilities. At this point they have been under construction for several months so there is no turning back.

PS....I've got an about a years supply of dog food too. When it goes on sale for 20% off plus 10% from Rakuten.....
