If I buy an airline ticket for my mother and it turns out she can't use it, is it possible to give the ticket to my daughter? :confused3 They ask for a lot of info about each passenger, including birthdays, etc. so I didn't know if it could be transferred to someone else.

Depends on the carrier. On most, no.

Actually southwest, and maybe Jet Blue allow it.

You're aware that you have to produce a government-issued photo ID.
This could be a driver's license, passport, state ID card if someone is
a non-citizen.

Southwest, and others, may allow you to return the ticket but it must
be re-issued in the travler's legal name.

Hope that helps.

Jet Blue does not let you change names on a ticket. Policy:

Name Changes

Name changes are not permitted. If you will not be traveling and would like
someone else to use your ticket, you may cancel your reservation for a fee of
$30 per person and the remaining amount will be placed into a JetBlue credit
good for one year. Save $5 when canceling your reservation online.

I couldn't find SWA's policy, but I'm certain that you cannot change the name on a ticket either; you cancel and get a credit which can be used by someone else.

Don't buy an airline ticket for anyone unless you are certain that they can use it.

No airline lets you change the name on a ticket.

You are correct. On SW you can transfer the credit to anyone.

As far as I know (and I think this is what ducklite was trying to say) only SW lets you do that. All of the "majors" will let you cancel and give you a credit (less thier change fee) but the credit MUST be used by the ticketed passenger regardless of who purchased the ticket. So if I purchase a ticket for my mother on Delta only she can use it or any credit resulting from a change.
