Airline recliners!!

Well, I guess I'm rude then, but I don't care. I recline my seat as soon as I'm allowed. If I don't, I get the most terrible back pains with half an hour. Sorry can't help it, my back is just crooked.
Also, I don't really see what the problem is, like Wayne said, if you recline your seat too you still have the same amount space. I've also never had a problem with people who recline their seat in front of me: the table stays fine and I can tilt the little screen. What's the problem?

We do try to get seat at the back so nobody is behind us. But this time I won't have to worry about anything... flying UC

Are you kidding? Seriously? You dont mind the seat in front of you being 2 inches from your face whilst trying to eat a meal? Or do you expect me to eat my meal whilst fully reclined, and in doing so making the person behind me also eat whilst laying back.
These people who are so inconsiderate to fully recline, without any thought to anyone else, during day flights, should be given their own cabins... where the seats are stuck on full recline, and they are fed by drips, as that's the only safe way to eat whilst flat on your back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I sincerely hope you're not on any of my future flights, UC or otherwise!

I don't think anyone is suggesting eating reclined. I know I wasn't. Although I have no problem anyone reclining rest of flight the seat should be upright for meals and I think the cabin crew should be very strict at enforcing it, even waking people if thats needed.
I never knew this was an issue for people until this thread. can't belive I have missed previous threads about it. I just assumed it was a feature of the airline and there to use as long as a quick check and go back slow never thought anything else about it. Done about 150 flights no-ones ever asked my permission, I never thought to ask anyone elses

I must admit I am a recliner, if I sit upright the whole way not do my my legs stick into the seat in front, but my travel sickness is double

if I lean back and try to sleep less chance of being sick lol

I didn't think you were sugesting it for a minute Wayne! But the reality is, and we've unfortunately experienced this more than once, some people recline for the whole flight, meal times included! To be honest, the transatlantic flight is the thing that puts me off going to Florida every year. I'd sooner spend 15+ hours in my comfortable car travelling to the south of France than spend 8+ on a flight! That said, Florida is still the best place to holiday in, so I just have to bite my tongue, and ignore the err, occasional 'person' who is less than considerate!

Well, considering your thoughts about me, I sincerely hope we are indeed never on a flight together. Your last comment was totally uncalled for.

First of all, you didn't say you put your seat up during meal times, in our experience, someone who puts their seat into full recline often intends to try and get some sleep, meal times or otherwise.
2. Seats dont go back a few centimetres, we both know it's much more than that... Even my children have struggled to eat (and they were only 6 and 7 the last time we went on a flight) when the seat in front was in full recline.
3. totally agree, getting seats at the back is the ideal place for people who want to recline all the time...
And as for you being thoughtful etc, that wasn't the impression I got from your original post, I apologise if I'm way off base... Perhaps I've just experienced too many inconsiderate, thoughtless passengers in the past.

i never ever recline my seat,no matter how long the flight.our furthest flight,has been to hawaii & i never even thought,about reclining.someone behind me,has paid for their little bit of space & i would never dream,of invading it.the space we have paid for,is limited enough,without having someone else,taking abit away.why should i recline & be inconsiderate,because the person in front of me,has been inconsiderate?
we are travelling to san francisco,in oct & are flying with united,the seats are in twos,by the window,so i have booked a 1 & a 2,so my husband,is infront of me & the grandaughter,that way,i know he won't recline.happy flight!!!!!!!!!!

It was a real struggle for her to get out of her seat to get to the toilet (my daughter was aged 9 at the time and had clear learning difficulties). We explained to the father what was going on and asked if he could put the seats up, not fully, just enough for us to get out. He clearly understood English but chose to speak in his native language (won't say what - don't want to offend anyone). !!!!

Needless to say the answer was no - and you've guessed it, fifteem minutes later daughter stood up and projectile vomited over said father and family. The father then processed to shout and scream at us - BUt did put up all four of their seats and for the rest of the journey kept a watchful eye over his shoulder

Sorry but he had it coming - he was warned

I have witnessed quite a few 'incidents' over reclining. Being confined in a narrow tube seems to bring out the worst in people (myself included - I freely admit to being unreasonably irritated when the person in front of me reclines).

It seems to me that if airlines removed the recline facility it would remove the cause of a great deal of 'air rage' in one fell swoop and leave the cabin crew free to perform the most important of their tasks which is supplying me with my drinkies

Everytime we go on a flight now we say very loudly to our daughter "Please tell me if you feel sick we don't want it all over the poor family in front now do we " !!!! Lucky our daughter understands that this is a joke just between our family. Does make other people think though.

I can see both sides of the 'reclining' argument. I think that people who recline on a day flight or during meal times are being a llittle thoughtless to their fellow passengers. However when it is a night flight I feel that this is a different matter. We have all paid for reclining seats so we should feel able to use them without being shouted at or having our seat kicked or thumped when we do.

Our last flight back from Florida was a night flight and once we were well under way I reclined DD (age 5) seat back so that she could settle down and get some sleep. The person behind started complaining and thumping at her seat. I explained that my DD was very young and needed to sleep and to please leave her alone. I too reclined my seat a little later in the journey so that I could sleep and again they started thumping my seat. I ignored them and went to sleep anyway. After all the row in front of us were all fully reclined and the passengers were sleeping.

When the meal was served the cabin crew did ask my DH to wake us and to put our seats upright which we happily did.

I was surprised to encounter this level of rage with seat reclining. As I had just assumed that if the seats recline then you have to just put up with it, I certainly wouldn't have bothered the passengers in front of me when they reclined after all they had the same right to use the facility as I do.

Totally agree! if it's a night flight (apart from meal times) you should be able to fully recline without too much worry/thought. To be honest, dont mind people reclining (maybe not fully) during day flights. It's just meal times people should show more consideration... And it annoys me immensely when people start saying if you dont like the seat in front reclining into your space, you can always recline yourself! Talk about a domino effect!!!!!!!

Just back from a short trip to Italy with Ryanair and the seats on the aircraft did not recline at all. It was only 2.5 hours though, and of course they have cost-cutting/profit maximisation off to a fine art and this not only eliminates 'air rage' but also means staff no longer have to remind people to put up seats for take-off and landing.

I'm definitely not suggesting this for long-haul flights though; just a bit of consideration for others.

They played a trumpet fanfare and made an announcement when we touched down ahead of schedule - apparently they have a close on 90% on-time record. Now if only Virgin could boast that, you could colour me happy!

Slight change of subject... do the seats at the back of each section, with no one behind you, recline as much as the others? It says on seat guru that they might not. I've never sat here on before and we're trying it on the way back this time so that we can be right next to the drinks when we get unbelievably thirsty half way through the flight.

We always go for back row of a section, then I can sleep all the way if I want and no need to sit up when food arrives. Only once I can remember being restricted, it hardly went back at all. All other times they have reclined at least same as middle seats and often more.
