Does anyone know if you can use the vera bradley large duffel as a carry on? The size of the duffel is 22 inches. The airlines are 21 inches. Has anyone ever tried this? Can this qualify for the carry on size. Any expierences our helpful.

Don't cram it full. As a fabric (flexible-sided) bag, it should easily fit in the space provided, as long as you leave 'squishing' room. Generally, it's linear inches that matter - height plus width plus depth can't exceed a certain number, within reason. Say it's sixty inches, that doesn't mean you can carry on something that's five inches deep and five inches wide and fifty inches long :teeth:

Linear measurements are generally used for checked bags. Airlines are starting to have specific measurements for carry on bags. They don't want bags that only fit in the bin lengthwise.

PP is correct, your bag should be OK as long as you can easily squish it to under 21" Pack it full and you may have to check it.

OP asked for experiences. You might get better information if you had indicated what airline you'll be flying.

Last time I checked JetBlue allowed larger bin bags then most airlines.

This is from the Delta Web Site:

Carry-on Baggage
Our goal is to provide a convenient and comfortable trip and help everyone get on and off the plane quickly so you can be on your way.

You may bring one carry-on bag and one personal item onboard at no charge, plus one extra smaller item like a coat or umbrella. All items must meet the size requirements for carry-on baggage, so they can easily fit into the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.

Approved Personal Carry-on Items
1 purse, briefcase, camera bag, or diaper bag;
or 1 laptop computer (computers cannot be checked and must be carried on);
or 1 item of a similar or smaller size to those listed above.
All carry-on items must be easily stored in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.
Additional Approved Carry-on Items
A couple of other items are okay to bring onboard. They do not count toward your personal items. Keep reading.

To be prepared for any kind of weather, you may bring a coat, jacket, or umbrella.
Enjoy food or drink purchased after clearing the security checkpoint.
Go ahead and shop. One box or bag of duty free merchandise is allowed.
A special item like a stroller, child restraint seat, or assistive devices such as wheelchairs or crutches.
Carry-on Items: Baggage Size and Weight Restrictions
When oversized bags don't fit in the overhead bins, delays happen. Fees will also be applied to the oversized bag if it has to be checked. In order to avoid delays as well as fees, follow these size and weight requirements:

Baggage may not exceed 45 linear inches (length+width+height) or 115 cm.
Baggage must fit easily in our SizeCheck® unit (approximately 22"x14"x9" or 56x36x23 cm).
Fees apply if your bag is too large to carry on and has to be checked at the gate.

Good Luck all.
Joe

I have used my Vera Bradley large duffel as a carry on bag on several recent flights over the past 2 years and never have had a problem. I have used it on Allegiant, United, American, and Delta. I don't over stuff it and it has always fit nicely in the overhead bins. I like it because it has no rigid sides and can be moled in to fit a tight squeeze.

It is also easy to fold and place inside another bag so that I have plenty of room to bring home all of my purchases. :laughing:

What about the 22" Vera Bradley rolling duffel? I'll be flying Air Tran which allows for a bigger carry on than most airlines. I bought this one in Blue Rhapsody a few months ago when VB was running that big sale on their luggage:

I still have the regular VB duffels in both the small and large size in both Raspberry Fizz and Mediterranean Blue, but want to use the new wheeled duffel. I also have the large Blue Rhapsody backpack to use as a personal item to match it.
