Airfare to London: OMG!!!

Thanks, Lewisc. I'll check those sites out. I never purchase from those sites, though. I just use them for research, then go to the airline's website to actually buy.

And it would take me way too long to get to either Cleveland or Chicago. I doubt the airfare would be low enough to entice me to all that driving on top of flying!!!

Sayhello

ETA: I did check. Currently the airfares from Cleveland are the same as from Columbus. And, except for Aer Lingus, the same is true for Chicago. This is quite a pain!

Consolidator fares shown on Momonda can't (usually) be purchased directly from the airline. edited to add Momonda doesn't only display consolidator fares.

I got a wonderful Christmas present yesterday.

I woke up very early to make our traditional Christmas brunch, and just happened to get on Orbitz to check on tickets to Europe for our Baltic cruise this summer. I saw the flights we wanted had dropped about $150/per person (equates to $600 of savings for our family of 4), so I decided to book (since Orbitz allows you to cancel within 24 hours with no penalty). I was so excited since I've been watching these for months and it hadn't budged.

When I checked a couple hours later, the price went back up. Thank goodness I happened to check airfares at 6am!! :cool1:

Congrats!!! That's great. I'm sure you're relieved!

Unfortunately, if getting lower fares requires me to be up at 6am, I'm doomed, because it ain't gonna happen! ;) :rotfl:

.....

FYI, you can cancel any airline ticket within 24 hours of purchase with no penalty (exception on some airlines for tickets purchased very close to travel date).

Yep same as people flying to the states.

Fortune.
Plus august is the six weeks summer holidays in the UK.

Which I agree with, but last year I flew to London during August (just a week later than the ticket I'm buying this year) and the airfare is up by $500!!! That's a bit much for an increase! Sigh...

That's only a legal requirement for tickets bought directly from an airline. Some agents also allow penalty-free cancellations within 24 hours, but they're not legally obliged to do so. So read the fine print carefully.

if time isn't a complete factor, look to fly into LHR from a euro city. last time I did it, it was US to Dublin to LHR and I saved about 450 bucks. you can look at berlin or Amsterdam or other landing points in Europe.

Did you try booking on Star Alliance partners directly? I really like Lufthansa!

Also, not sure if this is true or not, but try from a different computer maybe, they track activity and may be giving you higher prices.

Thanks! So far, Lufthansa has had pretty much the same price, also. Really, the only airlines that have been lower than $1725-ish is Aer Lingus and Icelandair, both of which do not fly from Columbus, OH, and would require me to buy a separate ticket to get to a large airport like JFK or BOS.

I've done the clearing cache and deleting cookies thing, and logging on with a different computer, and the prices are all still the same. Don't know if it really makes a difference or not, but it definitely hasn't in this case.

If you want to go Star Alliance, I recommend sticking with United not Lufthansa. If you fly UA, you will get advanced seat assignment, (on Lufthansa, lower fare classes don't get advanced seat assignments); on UA you can buy up to economy plus, and Lufthansa is a stickler for enforcing the weight of carry on bags (UA doesn't care if they meet size requirements). I have had Lufthansa take away my carry-on to be checked; very annoying.

Forgot to say You will have loads of time to make connections

to & from Uk or Europe at Dublin Airport

You might not be able to book a Through Ticket onwards

BUT book a separate Ticket from Dublin to ???? Return with Aer Lingus

( This just Might be in Euros cost )

& on the OUT at Columbus Try and have your luggage booked through

to Final Destination & the same on way back

Thanks, Woodview. But I'm flying to London, not Dublin. I'm trying to avoid having to book separate tickets. But I'll take a look at this option.

Thanks, lost*in*cyberspace, this is *very* good information!

Again, trying to avoid booking separate tickets. But thanks for the option!

Don't give up hope yet. I have been watching on Kayak for Pittsburgh to London, round trip, for July/Aug. For me too, the fares have been steady at around $1700, but today I see American has dropped to $1242. Hope your Columbus fares drop soon too.
Good luck!

Sigh. I see that I got notification this morning that American was down to $1520 on my route, but it's back up to $1758 now. I guess it was just momentary. :(

Thanks for letting me know!

On our FB page for the Baltics cruise someone posted about a special deal going on yesterday with United and Delta for some cities. In the morning you could fly from SFO to Dublin for $300 round trip. By time I checked it was "up" to $700. I still almost bought them, but I realized a spur of the moment trip to Europe probably wasn't the wisest choice with my big Europe cruises this summer. I don't think the fares were good though the summer or around Spring Break but I think they went through May.

Yes, I saw those. But they didn't cover my trip. I was jealous!
