airfare pricing

this is probably a silly question, but do airlines update their prices at a certain time of day? I realize they may go days or weeks without updating a certain fare, but I am just wondering if I should look for certain times in the morning or evening instead of checking all day long

I have heard it is in the early morning hours....4:00 a.m.-ish. Makes sense to me.

I don't know about the exact time they change fares, but I have been watching the days of the week carefully. Monday-Wednesday seem to be the cheapest days, the fares start rising by Thursday. The weekends is when I have seen the fares go up the most. I make it a practice to watch the fares and I usually will book on a Tuesday. I have been doing this for quite sometime now and have seen it be true with at least UA and AA.

From past experience they constantly make small changes in flight times and $ amounts.
There are only major changes when a NEW flight/airline posts it's schedule. Hence all, including me are waiting for Southwest and JetBlue to post their April schedules.

I susbscribe to the free 'airfare alert' service @ Travelocity.com.

Once you select the cities that you'd like to keep an eye on whenever the airfare is changed (let's say LA/Orlando---LAX/MCO), and choose when you wan to be notified (in my case, if the airfare goes up or down by $25.00 or more), they'll send you an e-mail.

They'll also provide all of the flights between those two cities from lowest airfare to highest. Once you find the flight which is most convenient for you, then just go to that airline's website and buy your tickets.

it depends on the airline..
some airlines use sophisticated software programs that automatically and continuously change the fares based on the number of inquiries for a specific flight..
in other words, if you inquire about a flight and get one price and then inquire again a few minutes later, it's possible that you will get a higher price on the second inquiry simply because of your two inquiries.....
