Has anyone here ever booked one way flights there and back on different airlines? I'm just wondering if I'd have any unforseen problems if I do it this way. I was looking at the times and fees and Southwest there and Airtran back both fit into my arrival and departure plans and price wise there's not much of a difference.

For our last cruise we flew Southwest down and Airtran back. We picked Airtran back because you didn't have to worry about checking in at the 24 hour mark, we could check the bags on the ship and and it worked out a little lesse expensive that way. It worked great and we had no problems.

With some carriers, the one-way cost will be higher than half the round-trip cost. As long as that isn't the case, then there's really no problem with booking this way. If you use Southwest, just be sure that you note your return confirmation number as it will be different and you'll need it to check in, unless you buy Early-Bird Check-in.

Don't forget that Southwest allows you up to two bags each for free, and Airtran charges $15 ea. for the first checked bag and $25 ea. for the second, so pack accordingly if that's the way you go.

I see you are from Ontario (though it sounds like you are driving to the US and flying from there).

If you are flying across the border, it is a good idea to have a copy of your return ticket (a print out of your e-ticket), just in case they ask for proof that you plan to return. I've never been asked by US immigration, but I have been asked when traveling in Europe and I have been asked by airline agents (they check your passport and stuff when you check in - they don't want to have to fly you back if your destination country doesn't let you in!).

You should be fine. TSA might me more likely to do a full security check on you. Apparently it's more common for them to do that for people with one-way tickets instead of roundtrip tickets. :confused3 Of course, take that with a grain of salt since I haven't had it actually happen to me. ;)
