Airfare from DTW to MCO

We are flying from Detroit to Orlando on March 5 and returning to Detroit on March 13. I have been checking airfare for months and the prices are awful. The cheapest I have been able to find is $230 RT. The flight down is with Delta/NWA and has a plane change in Atlanta. The flight back is non-stop.

The fares don't seem to be going down at all. There are six of us on this trip and I'm not sure how long I should wait to book.

Anyone have any suggestions or tips?

I usually consider anything around $275 non-stop, $225 connecting, to be a fair price for get-away-from-a-Michigan-winter travel. They can be lower, but at times they are a lot higher.

If those flights are at times you like, I'd consider them. AirTran might get you there and back on non-stop flights for a fairly competitive price. You might also check FNT, which has one non-stop flight on AirTran each day.

Finally, Southwest has some direct flights down and back with a stop in Nashville each way, but with a fairly quick turnaround. Total flight time is about 4 hours each way. I just got late February flights down and back for $159 or so on the day they opened winter. Normally, we prefer to pay a little more for non-stop flights, but that was such a good deal that I took them.

I would be happy with the fares you've found. We're going the first week of April and those same routes are double your fares. Southwest isn't out yet for April, so we're waiting.

Same here....April 3-9...

Right now, we're planning on driving. There are six of us, including my parents, so we will all fit in the Suburban. My parents have offered to split all of the travel costs 50/50 and that makes it a lot cheaper for us to drive. DH and my dad do NOT want to fly, at any cost, but mom and I would prefer to fly with the two kids. We may end up flying down (3-4 of us) and then all driving back together. The airfare has to come down quite a bit to even consider it, and I am not holding my breath.

Don't know if you are flexible with days but leaving March 4th and returning March 12th is $64.00 each way with Southwest or total with taxes of $170.40. There is 1 stop each way.

Our days aren't flexible as we are going on a cruise that leaves Port Canaveral on 3/6 and doesn't return until 3/13.

We decided not to take any chances and just book the flight on Delta/NWA for $230.
