Airfare from DTW for fall 2013??

We are looking to go late Nov. 2013 and I'm wondering if I'll get better airfare prices if I book when dates first come out? But looking at Oct. 2013 it's already $330 on Delta!!! Curious what anyone has paid so far?

Keep in mind if you are going late Nov 2013 that Thanksgiving is on Nov 28 in 2013 so you can expect flight prices to be very high!

Oh not to mention Disney will be very crowded around Thanksgiving.

I would wait until the discount airlines: Airtran or Southwest (out of Flint, not a bad alternative to DTW depending on where you are coming from) before booking.

If you have not used the Delta Amex gold card, you could sign up and get the 30,000 bonus miles to help toward a free ticket. We fly out of Detroit for all our trips and generally have never paid over $500 for 5 tickets. We have also flown spirit, and airtran, but now we pretty much stick with Delta.

How in the WORLD do you only pay $500 for FIVE tickets on Delta...or any airline?!? So you're saying the 30,000 points won't even quite get me one free ticket? I booked early last year for our August 2012 trip and still paid $1700 for six tickets....looking already at fall (rates aren't out for aftr Thanksgiving yet...the week we want to go)...tickets are over $300 each!

I've found Delta to be high when the flights first come out. I priced a ticket PIT-SNA for next August and it was over $800! I flew them in September PIT-SNA and it went down closer to the date. We decided to add an extra night 2 or 3 months before, I had a ticket with miles. I cancelled it, paid $150 to redeposit the miles and then rebooked, it was 7,500 less miles.

For my dates in April/May:

Southwest has a nonstop from Flint to Orlando.

Airtran has a nonstop from Detroit to Orlando.

Airtran has a nonstop from Grand Rapids to Orlando (don't know where you are coming from.....)

So jealous! For my trip this past August Delta was the only airline that offered nonstop.

I signed up for the card and then my wife signed up for the card so there is 60,000. We then both signed up for the business card and we received another 60,000. With that and some rewards from other credit cards we normally do not pay over $500. We will fly delta down and airtran back home if we can get better prices buying one way tickets . we have also used spirit several times with the $9 fair club. It is all a big game and you just have to know how to play the game. As long as you can keep everything straight you can generally come out ahead.

I talked DH into running the Wine & Dine Half-Marathon next November. Whether or not we go will hinge on a few things since this has to be a SUPER budget trip.

First, we *must* get a value studio at AKV...it's the only way we'll have enough points for our family trip in 2014.

Second, since the registration fee is cheapest when paid before the end of May (and it's non-refundable), we will have to secure our airfare before the registration fee increase. My limit is $300 r/t per person. Due to scheduling, it would be far more convenient to fly out of Grand Rapids, but I am willing to consider Detroit if the price is right. I've looked into Flint (we like AirTran) but the times have never lined up in our favor. Basically, as soon as I find a flight that is below $300, I'll book it. If it doesn't materialize before the end of May, then someone will get their value studio.

Starting April 14 (I think), Airtran will no longer be flying out of Flint and Southwest is taking over the route. They are still flying out of Grand Rapids through the current open schedule, that is where we are flying out of in April as I had free tickets that had to get used.
