Aircraft hand baggage restrictions imposed after an alleged terrorist plot to attack airliners are likely to be eased next week, the BBC has learned. Larger bags will be allowed on board, and passengers will be able take some liquids through security from Tuesday, the government is set to announce.

The government's transport security division is holding talks with the aviation industry on Monday.

I can see this willl only serve to confuse people even more. Yes, you can take your toothpaste but that must be in a seperate plastic bag, yes you can take your violin etc etc

- as long as I can buy my perfume and cosmetics! ;) I was panicking about the bag size too the only thing I had was a tatty laptop bag which fit the size requirements. :goodvibes hopefully we will be able to take snacks and juiceboxes on too for the kids.

Good news !!!

Hi

I spoke to Virgin today. They said to me that we are not allowed to pack any liquids this includes, hair gel, toothpaste, shampoos etc..

Things will change again. Looks like they already are.

I so hope this is true, we dont want to go out and buy smaller hand bags, when we have ones already, but they are just over the size allowance, as of present! We fly in 3 weeks, so fingers crossed!!

We fly Virgin, so Im not worried about not being able to take drinks onboard, however the SIZE of hand lugguage doesnt make it safer to fly !!! After all coming back to the UK from USA there is no size restricctions!

Fingers crossed !

Good news but i've already gone and bought the new size bags talk about jumping in to soon well that's me

Really hope so, our camera bag is about 2 inches too wide!

You're not the only one. So have we!

I'm not making any plans until the day before we fly. Whatever the restrictions are, I'm happy - I just want to get there and I'll fit in with whatever restrictions are in place.

::yes:: :thumbsup2

I have to say I hope they keep some limit on the hand luggage size. I saw the size of bag they were planning on allowing on board and it's huge, if loads of people use them the overhead lockers will fill up before half the plane has been boarded.

Absolutely! I thought this was an ideal opportunity to set the size at a sensible level. A medium sized rucksack and a handbag/camara bag always seemed ample to me.

It really annoys me when I see people filling up the overhead lockers with these ridiculously large bags, which in some cases they even seem unable to lift without assistance, leaving no space for other passengers :(

I'm happy the rules look like they are about to be relaxed though :)

Quite. Not to mention the fact that they stand for ages, blocking the aisles and holding up boarding.
