I want to visit my daughter who lives in NY and she suggested using Airbnb where I will
stay at someone's house/apartment.

It's a lot cheaper than staying at a hotel.

Has anyone ever tried?

I've used it twice in Philly and it was successful! Just be sure to look into the neighborhood in which you'd be staying before you book. Read the reviews. That kind of thing. :)

Did it for the first time on a vacation condo rental. I was pleased overall. I rented the whole condo not a room.

We just did it last night actually. I made sure to use an airbnb..... I don't remember the term they use but it is like an ebay power seller or whatever. Basically, someone who had been doing it for quite some time and had a lot of positive reviews.

It worked out beautifully for us. Like the PP, we rented a whole condo rather than just a room. That would be weird I think.

I haven't done it yet. While it can be cheaper than staying at a hotel, I feel like the risk of a disaster is significantly higher staying at an AirBnB than a hotel or a bed & breakfast.

I think that's true if you don't do your due diligence beforehand. I've used airbnb quite a few times, and never had any sort of problem. I look for people who have quite a few positive reviews, no "notices" that stays were cancelled at the last minute (you see this sometimes in the comments), high response rate (how quickly they get back to you), etc.

I DO think you have to be more careful before booking than you would with a hotel (although even with hotels, I read reviews, look up location, etc), but if you do that, I don't worry one little bit about problems developing during my stay.

That being said, I also would NEVER do an airbnb that involves me sharing a space with anyone. That is just an "ew" for me. I will only do those where I get the entire apartment, or home.

We usually rent through HomeAway or VRBO; haven't tried airbnb yet. But, yes, we always rent a house when we vacation (except Disney) and have never had a bad experience.

We are a family of 5, so it's easier than finding a hotel to accommodate more than 4. And it saves us money because we can bring food/cook. We have also enjoyed renting in a walkable place (St. Augustine, Wilmington, etc) where we can walk everywhere we want to go from the house.

Edit: Just realized that you may have meant staying WITH someone, rather than renting their apartment. I have never done that. Only rented where we had the whole house/apartment to ourselves.

Yep, several times including Mexico, will be staying at another one in Mexico in June. No issues and saved us a lot of money. I've also used VRBO for years. We like having a condo/house, etc. vs. a hotel room if staying for more than a night or 2. I don't mind sharing the common rooms but sharing a bathroom is where I draw the line.

A couple of years ago I stayed the night at an AirB&B in Denver. It was weird being in a stranger's house, but the room was very nice (even though it just someone's spare bedroom) and in a nice neighborhood. And I paid about a third of what i'd have paid for a decent hotel room. All told, no complaints.

that is amusing- technically perhaps but there are hundreds for you to choose from- I stayed at a nice one in Chelsea for a few days when I needed to be in NYC for a few days and didn't feel like commuting back and forth. Many people I know use airbnb in NYC.

LOL. I know nothing about it. Been to NYC once. But when on the trip advisor forums planning the trip it was brought up daily.

I'm not a gambler. I wouldn't take the chance myself especially since we had the kids with us.

In the end we were rarely in the room anyhow so having a apartment wouldn't have mattered. Your in NYC who spends time in their hotel!

Yes I find it "amusing" to have all the facts when making a decision.

To get technical, the OP didn't actually say NYC specifically. She just said 'NY' - it's a big state. ;)
