I am wondering what documents or if I will need any when we travel with our son who will be 2 at the time. I know I have to buy him a seat on the plane but does he need an ID or anything?

As long as you buy him a seat you won't need an ID or anything.

If he/she is a "lap child" then you need to bring birth certificate or shot record etc.. to "prove" the birth date.

Exactly what the PPs said. I fly twice with DD when she was 2 and didn't need anything either time. When she was almost three, the TSA guy checking our ids asked her what her name was, but she was shy and didn't reply. No biggie! Enjoy your trip. :)
