Have you considered a self-inflating air pad? We tent camp and I got tired of hauling a bulky, heavy air mattress and pump around, so did some research and learned about these. I bought a couple of Cabela's self-inflating pads. A bit pricey (well over a $100 for a nice one), but sooooo comfortable it rivals my real mattress at home. Relatively compact (1/3 the size of a sleeping bag), only weighs a few pounds, and takes less than a minute to set up.
Last summer I picked up 3 more but cheaper and of a different brand (basically good enough for the kids who don't care about comfort as much as me). I want to think I paid between $50 and $60 a piece for them through Dick's Sporting Goods.
They'll last forever and I can always bring them along for hotel visits when the bed configuration isn't quite right.
