I just made a cake for my friend's b-day and it hasn't turned out the greatest. For the icing, the recipe recommended melting the icing first and just pour it over the cake. Well, it made quite a mess but there's nothing I can do about that now. I've cleaned it up as much as I can. Anyway, I was thrilled to be finished and went to put the lid over the cake. Well, the cake is too big. The lid touched the top of the cake and made even more of a mess. I fixed it up with more icing the best I could (looks worse now!) and I tried to put foil on top (with toothpicks in cake) but the foil still got onto the cake and stuck (so I put more icing on)!!! Oh this cake is pathetic! :p

Anyway, how can I store this cake in the refrigerator? We're not eating it until tomorrow. There's a pudding layer in the cake so it must be refrigerated. Any ideas on what kind of lid to use? The lid that goes with the set isn't deep enough and the alluminum foil just made a big mess. Eek! I KNEW there's a reason I don't bake!!

Thanks!!

Go to a bakery, get a fabulous cake, feed yours to the dog. Been there, done that! ;)

Do you have a big tupperware or metal bowl you could put over it?

What shape is your cake? Is it round or is it the 13x9 rectangular shape?

When I make my standard rectangular shape cake I put the cake on the lid of my rectangular rubbermaid tub lid, using that as my platter and then use the tub part as my lid.

No advice...just chiming in my support...you are such a dear friend for BAKING a cake for a friend!! If any of my friends could even REMOTELY bake and they went to the trouble of baking me a cake...Oh , I'd LOVE it!:)

I'd put the cake in the frig until the icing hardens and then cover it with plastic wrap.

Ok, here is my advice:

Cover the cake w/ foil for about 2 hours. Meanwhile, go buy some whip cream, a large hershey bar w/almonds and a brick of cream cheese. Chop the candy bar in a mini chopper.

Whip the cream cheese, add the whipped cream. Add the crushed hershey bar. Frost the cake. (Thickly to cover up mistakes.) Put toothpicks in the top and foil on top of that. Refrigerate overnight. Viola'!!::yes::

Wishing everyone a "magical" day!

Thanks to everyone for your ideas and for the chuckle! Maybe I can salvage this thing yet!! ;) Thanks again!

one thing Ive found to help keep foil off of a sticky substance is to put toothpicks in on the edges and center to lift the foil off a bit so it doesnt stick

good luck!

Any updates?? I have been thinking about your poor cake....lol Wish I had some about now.....

I second buying a cake.

Wow, thanks everyone! Well, here's the update. I've been cooking ever since I first posted! I'm making a full dinner (for 6 people) and I like to do as much the day before as possible. The cake is a Boston Cream cake so there's vanilla pudding in the centre. Anyway, I REALLY considered throwing the silly thing away, but after all the work I put into it, I couldn't bring myself to do it. Instead, I've decided to "dine out" on it so to speak. The story is rather amusing when I think about it. My dh came home and giggled when he saw it, but said it's not TERRIBLE! :p Now, what does that mean??? ;) As someone mentioned above, maybe this sorry looking cake tastes great! Hopefully my guests have a sense of humour! Oh......if only I had a digital camera, I'd show you all a picture!

I decided to leave it in the fridge, uncovered, until the icing hardened a bit. I thought that with the icing hard, I could do the toothpick trick and put foil around the tooth picks. Well, my patience must've been wearing thin because when I tried that, I STILL got foil to touch the cake and it stuck......ripping off MORE icing!! I decided to give up the foil idea and I rumaged our cupboards and found an enormous bowl that JUST fit over top of the cake. I'm just going to forget about it until tomorrow. I'll try to remember to post after dinner tomorrow. Someone remind me if I forget! Thanks everyone for your support and encouragement! I came very close to just tossing it out the window and taking the next plane to Disney!! :earseek: Hmmm, maybe that's not a bad idea afterall! :teeth:

How about putting some toothpicks in so that you can keep the saran wrap off the frosting, that is what I usually do..

Wait, I just read you tried the toothpick trick... I would try it again and use plastic wrap rather than foil.. eeek.. good luck.. :D

CJK,

I hope your dinner goes well. That is so kind of you cook dinner and dessert for your friend's birthday. I'm sure she'll be thrilled with the cake!

I couldn't help but laugh when reading of your problems covering the cake. Sorry...but I can totally relate! I can't keep the foil from sticking from the icing on my cakes. Your story brought back memories of some of my "cake disasters." But like everyone said, they still taste great! Boston cream cake sounds wonderful!

Best of luck tomorrow! :wave2:

bake all your cakes in a standard (13x9) cakepan. Have 2 of the pans, same size. Bake a cake in 1 pan, then frost it, then use the other pan upside down to cover it. The edges should line up, and then you can use aluminum foil or saran wrap to wrap the 2 pans together.

What a dear heart to do this for your friend! Believe me - she will appreciate all the love you've put into doing something special for her. :goodvibes

Don't stress - we'll all been there honey. Brought back memories of my infamous pineapple upsidedown cake breaking in half!!

My mom made a chocolate layer cake for my dad's birthday one year. It ended up looking like a "great chocolate mountain cake."
