Do they have an age requirement for the Castaway Cay 5K? My son would like to run at the end of the month, he will be 13. He would be the only one in our party running. We have been to CC quite a few times and not worried about him getting lost. I could not find anything on if they would let someone his age run by themselves.

Officially Age limit ten years old. It's an adult activity, but children younger do it.

They run fast. If your worried about him getting behind or lost, can he buddy someone?

I wouldn't worry about him. There are lots of people (us included) who do some running but lots of walking. He should be just fine. There are water stops along the way if he gets thirsty. He can't get lost and we have often seen cast members directing the flow. He will enjoy the medal he gets at the end of the run.

We cruised this past May. My son, 11 at the time, basically ran the 5k by himself. I started with him but couldn't keep up (he's a runner). I only did half of the 5k. I met him at the finish line. I believe an adult in your stateroom will have to get off the ship with him because if his age. Don't know for sure if someone will "have to" participate with him though. He'll be fine.

How did you only do half? I have this vision that the course is a big loop of sorts that you run once. Am I totally off-base?

This is the route of the 5K. It starts at the bike rental, goes to the runway, goes through the bike loop, to Serenity Bay, back down the runway, through the bike loop again, then back to the bike rental. The water stop is where the bike loop meets the runway (so you go by it four times). There are enough people on the course so there is no risk to him getting lost or left behind (I know you were not concerned with him getting lost, but you can see there is even less of a risk). I am a walker, but there still a number of people who finished after me.

Go to Guest Services to get the ticket to run. I can't imagine, but if they say an adult also needs to do the course with him, get a ticket for yourself too (but you don't need to run!). There is no cost to the tickets. You and he will need to meet with the participants that morning and then escort him off the ship since he is underage. I would also recommend you escorting him to the bike rental, since everyone is walking and it is easy to get disconnected from the other runners. Only if you want, you could go to the water station, and just wave to him each time he passed you by. But he would be fine doing the actual 5K by himself.

How strict are they on the age 10 issue? My son wants to run with me when we go next July. He is very tall and has run 5Ks with me before, but he will only be 9 (and 2 months!) when we go. We saw the 5K in a blog post before we saw the age restriction and I don't know if I have to break it to him that it's a no, or if he might be able to join me and earn his own little medal! I read that we have to sign up in advance so they'll clearly be able to see his age in our reservation (and I have no intention of making any falsifications on our reservation!).

Anyone can run the course - it's not like it's closed. But for a bib and the medal each participant must be the minimum age. You sign up beforehand and get tickets like an excursion so they would not be able to just put him in.

You could probably just sign up for it yourself and give him the bib.

Ah perfect thanks - didn't even think of that! Will definitely sign up my husband to "run with me" and give my son the bib!
