I'm trying to decide which AG doll to get my niece for Christmas. She likes the bitty baby twins. Can you fix the hair different ways or is it the kind that only looks good before you take the ponytails out? Maybe I should go ahead and get her one of the 18" dolls. For those of you who have experience with these which would be the best choice?

We have Molly, Samantha, and Julie - and by far Julie's hair is the best for styling. My daughter (age 6) loves to style Julie's hair in different ways! Make sure you get the "special" brush for the AG dolls, it makes a difference I think!

My unsolicited advice on doll hair care:

You should only use a wire wig brush on the dolls. Doesn't necessarily have to be the AG branded one, but any other type of brush will tear the hair. You also shouldn't let your DD use her doll's brush on herself, or her brush on the dolls. The oils from human hair aren't good for the synthetic doll hair.

I also agree Julie is a good doll for girls who like to style the hair. Her hair is long but super silky & smooth, and doesn't tangle easily.

We have both. DD7 got the bitty twin when she was 4 and she got Kirsten for Christmas last year. The one thing she doesn't like about her itty twin is it doesn't sit up on its own. The doll falls back into a lying down position. The larger dolls stand and sit on their own.

Oh, and their isn't much hair on the itty bittys. Probably will look funny if it is taken out of the pony tails.

I had Molly growing up, and my mom rebraided her hair a couple times. It still looks beautiful. I never put other styles on her though.

what about one of the just like me versions? You could pick one that most resembles her by eye color, skin tone, and hair color? DD has one of those and 'she' has hair that is long enough for her to style.

Ditto regarding the wig brush...:goodvibes

My DD has the bitty twins. To be honest the pig tails did not even make it through lunch at the cafe. Her hair is still beautiful every time we brush it. By far it is the best hair of any of her dolls so far.

Good Luck you can't go wrong with any of the American Girl Dolls:wizard:

Depends on how old your niece is. DD has 4 larger AG dolls (Samantha, Felicity, Elizabeth, and Emily) she also has the boy and girl Bitty's. At 8 I feel okay letting her brush and do limited styling on her big dolls. If she were 5 I wouldn't. They are such nice dolls and so expensive, they honestly require (at our house anyway) very gentle care. If I were giving her a first doll and picking from the 4 she's got I'd do Emily because she has hair long enough to style but short enough to be manageable. Also it's stick straight which is huge plus in keeping it neat. DD's friend got a JLY doll last Christmas and I saw it this summer. It looked terrible. Ratted hair and just very unkempt. So any of them *can* get awful looking if not treated well.

The Bitty doesn't have the best hair for styling but for a younger girl it would be perfect. When taken down it is a shoulder length, layered page boy cut. You can do a short ponytail, pull back the top section, do a small braid, etc.. To be honest - if she is under 8 or 9 and this is her FIRST AG doll and she hasn't got her heart set on a certain one I would go with BTs. Especially since for the price of one larger doll you can get two smaller ones (or just the girl and a couple of outfits......)

ETA - I third the wig brush, don't use anything else!

Thanks for all the input. I think I'll go with the twins. They are super cute and I'm sure she will be happy with them. I would love to take her to the AG store when she is older to pick out one of the bigger dolls.

Does anyone have Lanie? If so, how is her hair? DD wants a larger AG doll for Christmas or her 8th birthday - she already has two bitty babies and the twins. I like Lanie because she has hazel eyes. There are a couple of JLY dolls with hazel eyes as well. DD would love Lanie's curls, but they do make me a bit nervous.

Edited to add:

Do only the JLY dolls have access to Innerstar U? I know DD wants to go online with her doll, and there is a JLY with blond curls and hazel eyes.
