Aerosol Hairspray Odd Question

The hairspray I use was only available in the aerosol can instead of the pump spray bottle, so I bought it. My question is can I spray the aerosol into my tiny pump bottle I use when traveling? I usually just pour a little into my small spray bottle when I have to fly so as adhere to airline rules of 3 ounces. So, if I spray from the aerosol can into the tiny pump bottle will I get the same result? Or, will the hairspray lose something from aerosol can spray to pump bottle, like it won't hold anymore, or some other chemical (no longer works as hairspray) type deal. Thanks for any help.

Um, no to which part? Please elaborate. Thanks.

Since the questions you asked were:

"My question is can I spray the aerosol into my tiny pump bottle I use when traveling?"

and

"if I spray from the aerosol can into the tiny pump bottle will I get the same result?"

I'm guessing the answer is "no" to both.

There is a Tresseme travel size pump hair spray. I get it at Walmart or Target in the travel size section. Very good stuff! N water, so it dries quickly.

No, you cannot spray from an aerosol can into a small pump bottle, it does not work

Thanks everyone. Looks like I'll have to get a trial size or get another large pump bottle of hair spray & keep on pouring it into my travel bottle.

It's not likely to work well. In a hermetically sealed can, it's probably formulated to dry really quickly once it leaves the oxygen-free environment in the can. Part of the alcohol is likely to evaporate, but I'd mostly worry about the polymers hardening.

Pump sprays are also formulated for the exact pump.

I suppose you could try. However, you'd probably spend so much time trying to spray out enough hair spray that it will dry out and/or harden.

BTW - anyone remember a hybrid pump/aerosol spray sold under the Vidal Sassoon brand? I remember this spray that wasn't pressurized on the shelf, but wasn't exactly sprayed. The basic idea was that it could be pressured by pumping it (sort of like a gardening chemical bottle), but then a button was pressed to spray it. There were concerns of the propellants in spray cans being damaging to the environment, but I think those types of propellants were phased out in the early 80s. The idea of the VS spray was that you could get an even mist like with a spray can, but still use a bottle that wasn't pressurized until you needed it. I also recall refills without the nozzle and pumping mechanism.

I remember that type of hairspray. My best friend in HS had it, along with one of those travel curling irons that took the butane cartridges.
:thumbsup2

Nothing funner than touching up the curls at lunchtime.
:)

I don't think the kind of hair spray I was thinking of is still on the market. However, I found an article discussing it.

Ecological Pitch For New Hair Spray

Procter, whose Vidal Sassoon brand will still market aerosol and non-aerosol hair sprays, has tapped into a German unit for pump technology that mists without a chemical propellant.

Air Spray, patterned after a brand sold by its Blendax subsidiary in Germany, emits 39 percent less organic compound into the environment than traditional hair sprays, Procter says.

To use Air Spray, consumers pump the cap 10 to 15 times to build up air pressure to power the spray. ``With a little effort of pumping, consumers are doing the environment a favor,`` says a Procter official.

I always recall the problem with regular pump sprays is that they tend to clog after stopping, especially with a weak pump. Most also have a spray head that's moving, so that affects the accuracy of where it's sprayed.

I could find one place that sells just the bottles, although I'm not sure if P&G licensed it or if the patent has expired. The cap serves as the pump, but then there's a spray nozzle.
