Hi

Not sure who to turn to with this so i'm hoping someone on here will know and be able to point me in the right direction.

Basically I rented a 2 bedroom cottage in Devon. The cottage had its own website, lovely photos, seemed very idyllic, heated outdoor pool etc. To cut a long story short the property was in the middle of nowhere, almost 1/2 mile of rough steep drive with huge sharp stones - not even a dirt drive - dirty pool, not heated, freezing cold, dirty bathtub with non-working shower and to top it off the woman next door who owns it walked past the house and actually looked into the sitting room when we were in it!

It was horrible, Matilda had 2 massive strops because she couldn't understand why she couldn't go swim - we didn't want her to turn blue. Quite rightly too as I wanted to have a strop too.

We complained the next morning (we arrived at 6pm the night before) and said we were not happy and that it was not as described and the woman said fine, she'd refund us the 6 days but didn't have that much cash at home and would sort out a transer and so we packed up and left, absolutely gutted.

So, since this has happened i've emailed with our details, no response. Emailed the next day, no response. Have rung, answering machine. I know its only been 2 days but i'm getting quite stressed about it as the house was quite pricey. If they don't refund us the money what recourse do we have? We rented directly from them, I paid by credit card for protection but she could only take credit card payment via paypal and I have since found out that my credit card company doesn't cover you if you use something like paypal. :guilty:

I really hope someone can give me some advice about this, I really want to get our money back not just because of the huge disappointment of losing out on our holiday but i'm going to need it for my make-up holiday next year...three guesses where we're going ;) I'll give you a clue, its not a field in Devon...

TIA

 OMG Eloise, it sounds like it was a nightmare. I wish I had some advice for you, I guess I would threaten them with solicitors if you didn't receive your money back asap

 So sorry that your holiday was ruined hun

How dreadful. :sad2: I hope you took lots of photos. I'd suggest you go to the Citizens Advice Bureau.

Good luck

Well they have kept to their word and refunded us the money so that is a relief. We're having an enforced 'staycation' now which isn't as fun as being away but we're making the best of it.

Thoughts of Florida next year make me smile :)

I did find out that Paypal will not guarantee any payment made for services, only goods which are posted so I won't ever pay with a credit card via paypal again for services, too risky.

how awful, glad it was sorted

Glad you got your money back. :thumbsup2 I hope you still manage to have some fun at home.

Thank goodness you've got your money back. Hope you can make the best of your week.

glad you got your money back, but how disappointing for you all.

Not really sure how exactly to advise you, apart from to recommend doing some googling for other peoples experiences & contacting the CAB. Just wanted to empathise with you, as it is difficult when you are dealing with a private individual as opposed to a faceless company :sad2:
I hope you get a happy resolution soon.

Eloise, that place sounds liek an absolutely nightmare. I'm so pleased you got your money back - and thanks for the advice on paying for services (rather than goods) by Paypal, I would never have realised I might not be covered. Hope you manage to enjoy the rest of your week :goodvibes

...three guesses where we're going ;) I'll give you a clue, its not a field in Devon...

TIA

does it begin with Or and end in Lando ???

delighted to hear you got r money back

but it is so maddening that people are getting away with this kind of thing

So pleased you got your money back - what a relief that must've been. Enjoy your staycation :goodvibes

so sorry that happened to you hun, thats outrageous that they advertised it like that

so glad you got your money back

that happened to us once when i was younger. the place was advertised as a delightful holiday cottage by the seaside. it was by the seaside but i wouldnt exactly want to spend a holiday there and it definitely was not delightful. we did stay there but the place was disgusting i have never forgotten it
