advice on tipping

Hello,
from reading this board, I tipped on our recent stay. I left 4.00 along with a note asking for extra coffee. To my surprise, there was a whole bag of coffee when I returned. We enjoyed having the extra pot during our afternoon break each day. We found that we also received extra soap and shampoos, which we used as part of a souvenior.

BTW, we do tip at other hotels too, but only at the end and only if we are staying for an extended period of time.

Just another reminder, you usually have different housekeepers on a daily basis, so tipping daily is recommended. I don't think the housekeepers split up you tip at the end of your stay.

I always thought anyone that provides a service should be tipped.

Anyways...What about tipping on the dining plan? I think it says tips are included? Ill want to tip and my DH will not!

As far as tipping on the dining plan....what others have said is that the wait staff does get a 15% tip, but they felt that the wait staff did not go out of thier way as far as customer service because they knew they were not going to get a big tip....so maybe if you get great service you can talk DH into giving a little extra.

I just wanted to say we've been saving a long time to go to Disney.As you all know it takes alot of saving! I really don't like leaving tips for anybody, I am a housekeeper at a nursing home, we are NOT allowed to take tips and I feel I work just as hard as the next person who gets tips.(maybe I'm bitter ) My DH does disagree with me so if he pays the person will get a tip. Sorry no offence to anyone

Tipping is not really a matter of whether or not a service working is "doing their job" or not. Rather, some services are priced based on the expectation that the cost of service will be shared between the employer and the recipient of the service, based on the principle that the recipient of the service is in the best position to determine the level of quality delivered, and thereby adjust the compensation appropriately.

Not all service positions are structured like this. Generally, throughout the US domestic travel and hospitality industry, the service positions that are "tipped" (including restaurant servers, valets, bell staff, taxi drivers, etc.) versus "not tipped" (including cashiers, mechanics, etc.) are consistent -- with one notable exception: Housekeeping. Mind-blowing but true, roughly half of hotel housekeepers are in tipped positions, and about half are in not tipped positions. At Disney hotels, housekeeping is not a tipped position -- no gratuity is necessary for the mousekeepers.

well i just got back. we tipped $2 each day.

i was sad though, because we never got any extras i read about. no towel animals or anything.
