Some of my group will be using a tent in July. Does anyone know of a good economical air conditioner. Most of what I see in portables are around $400

We just use an old window unit air conditioner some one gave us...put it on the floor half in and half out the back door, zip the tent door down around it as far as it will go, then stuff a piece of old tarp in the gap. It drains outdoors.

We are going to the Fort in July with our kids. They will be staying in a tent. Teresa and I will be staying in a teardrop camper that has AC. Don't see how the kids can survive without some kind of AC. How did the window unit work? How big was the AC unit?

Lots of people use a window A/C and just set it outside with a duct running through a window or other opening in a tent wall. A search on this forum might turn up some pictures of setups that work.

1. How did the window unit work?

2. How big was the AC unit?

1.You just have to figure out how to vent the hot air out of the tent and/or the cool air into the tent while keeping the front or "inside part" out of the rain and letting it drain if it has one..

Here is a commercial product. http://www.acboot.com/work.html

2. Well the smallest window unit you can find from normal sources is 5,000 BTU's and I can't imagine, even with tons of loss, that you would need anything bigger.

It was just a small window unit...our pop up is small, too, so it worked fine. We were not there during the day, but it kept us cool at night.

Thanks JanL. We spend most of the day out in the parks. It would be nice to have the AC when you sleep at night or to be able to take a little bit of the bite off the daytime heat if you wanted to come back and take a nap during the day.

Unless you have a tarp for shade, the a/c probably wouldn't be able to keep it cool during the day (April thru October).
