Advice needed on UY.

I’m hoping to get some advice from my DIS friends.

I am trying to make a decision on whether to change my UY or not. (I know I can’t change it outright, but I’m talking about buying a contract with a different UY and selling my current UY contract somewhere in the future.)

Here’s my situation. We bought a BVW contract with a Dec UY. We originally wanted a Sept or Oct UY, but no contracts with those UY’s were available when we were ready to buy and a contract to our liking was available with a Dec UY, so we purchased it with plans to add on more points later. At that time I did not realize that if I buy another contract with a different UY, that contract will have a different account and those points could not be combined. So now I want to keep all of my points in a single UY, therefore I need to decide if I want to keep my Dec UY or change. The reason I originally wanted a Sept or Oct UY is because lately we have been traveling mostly at Thanksgiving or Mardi Gras. My thinking was a fall UY would cover both dates for banking purposes, but I have come up a theory that may have changed my mind about keeping the Dec UY.

I’d like to run that theory by the experts on the board and see if you all agree with my thinking. In the job I currently have, we have been extremely busy since hurricanes Katrina and Gustav. Any vacations I schedule are subject to be canceled because of workload. The only time I can schedule a vacation and know it won’t have to be rescheduled (for work purposes, anyway) is Thanksgiving.

So here’s my theory. I am now thinking that a Dec UY would work for me because if a situation arises where I have to cancel a DVC vacation during the year, I know I can always use those points at Thanksgiving time. (assuming availability). So Thanksgiving would be sort of a ”safety net” I could use to avoid losing points that would otherwise expire at the end of my UY. If I had a Sept or Oct UY, those points would expire before Thanksgiving.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for reading my long post and any help would be appreciated.

What will your schedule be like on your next job and the one after that? Did you know that you can transfer points between your own contracts?

Two big problems I see with using Thanksgiving as a fallback for a December contract.

I think (I'm from the northeast, forgive me if I'm a little bit off) most hurricanes occur in August and September. That is already past the 100% banking deadline for your December contract. So if a hurricane occurs during August you can't bank and you might not be able to book for Thanksgiving either because it is such a busy time at WDW and it is only three months to the holiday.

You'd be better off without a December contract with your circumstance so maybe you should just plan Thanksgiving anyway and hope you don't have to cancel that.

All that being said, will your vacations be the same today as they will be ten years from now? Maybe what doesn't work so well now, will work well in a few years.
