Advice? Last minute Hurricane cancelation sob story

Excited to hear it worked out! Just make sure your friends double check their account and that it is indeed done correctly. Sometimes those at the resorts aren’t as familiar with the DVC points system and have been known to make errors...not on purpose!!

Glad you got refunded your dining plan. I would also urge the owners to reach out to Member Services to have those points put into something other than holding if they were in fact put into holding. Wishing you the best.

As a follow up, this morning the MK was quite dead. Before lunch time, thanks also to the extra magic hour and early opening, I did every ride in the park (except a couple I didn't bother with) and many repeats. Sorry you didn't come, but you did the right thing if you felt it was a risk for your family.

Glad it worked out. I can understand why you cancelled. We were at Boulder Ridge last week and we just got home yesterday(Monday). The whole situation certainly added some stress to the trip.

@amradio

If the points are in holding remember that they need to be used before the end of the current UY. On top with holding points you can only book 60 days out.

Get you friends to confirm that points are in holding or not. If they are in holding they might be able to get MS to move them into regular points.

FYI - if they put your friends points into holding, they may not be able to use them (they have to be used for a trip less than 60 days in advance). So please don't be upset with them if they can't use them and they ask you to still pay them for the points. But you DID get the DDP refunded so that's really something.

Since it was a Dorian-related cancellation, MS should remove the points from holding if they weren't already removed. If this happened to your friend, I would advise them e-mail MS to correct it.

"If you must cancel your reservation due to Hurricane Dorian, all Vacation Points and Reservation Points will be returned to the Membership in the way they were utilized for the reservation.

If you used Vacation Points to make reservations at a Disney Vacation Club Resort, then your reservation can be cancelled online. Once cancelled, please email Member Services to have your Vacation Points removed from the holding account. Be sure to include the following information in your email:

  • Your name
  • Reservation number
  • Description of your request
Member Services will make the necessary adjustments within 4 weeks. For all other types of reservations, please call Member Services at (800) 800-9800 or (407) 566-3800. You must be at least 18 years of age to call."

Just FYI your friend’s points being in holding are next to worthless to them because of their short lifespan, need to book w/in 60 days (when very little is available,) etc.. Even if they can have them moved back to non holding status they may still be worthless to them, depending on their use year, whether they were borrowed or banked, etc..
DVC is basically booked solid from now through early next year, so if their points expire in that time period (depends on use year) having them put into holding or even returned to status quo is worthless since there is no place to book to use them. Remember also that your friends paid maintenance fees on those points.
I assume that you plan on not asking for a refund of what you paid for the points from your friends since you made the decision to cancel. Perhaps your friends can work with you to reschedule if possible w/in whatever time constraints are attached to the points?

Update: yes, I was unaware of the holding situation, but we are on very good terms with these friends: they are planning a trip with these points this fall and they will swap us for a similar value next year. They are usually planning their next Disney trip, so it turned out ok. I’m glad to know how these policies work for future reference.

@amradio So pleased for you that all worked out well :) It's a shame you missed out on your vacation but from your posts it seems it was the right decision for you at the time.
Have a wonderful time when you eventually reschedule your trip :)

This thread is a good example why looking for a contract with a UY that works well with one's travel date is a good thing.

Unfortunately buying your own perfect UY does not take into account if you rent or give points to friends and family which travels outside the "perfect" travel window for each UY
