I am not into Harry Potter at all, but I am traveling in November with 5 who are HP fans, so we are taking a day a Universal/IOA to take in all things HP.

Any advice for a muggle who would be visiting for the first time?

Will you have park to park tickets? Will you have express pass?

Are you planning to hang with the 5 or are you willing to go off by yourself?

It is kind of difficult to give advice based on what you have written.

I'd say biggest piece is if you are going for one day make sure you have park to park tickets. The Harry Potter areas are split between both parks and you have to have p-t-p tickets to ride the Hogwarts Express which travels between the two areas. Also the HE is a different experience each direction so make sure to ride it twice for the full experience.

I am not particularly interested in HP - seen some of the movies - but just not my thing

That being said I do enjoy the HP areas in both parks so I would say just follow along with your friends and enjoy it.
The other option is yes just go off on your own if you get bored of it - there is plenty to do on your own and unlike Disney you really don't need a plan.

You don’t have to be into a theme to appreciate it. I’m sure there are parts of Disney that you aren’t necessarily raving about but can certainly enjoy when you’re experiencing them.
Watch the first movie. Watch it come to life in the parks.
Maybe look up all the spoilers/ Easter Eggs (sticky above) and treat your visit like a scavenger hunt to find them. :)

I am not into Harry Potter at all

could mean...
A) I've never read/seen it
B) I've seen it, but I'm not attached to it
C) I actively disliked it

So my advice is...
A) Watch at least movie 1, or listen to the audio book.
B) Just go along. - It's very well done, even if it doesn't mean anything special to you.
C) It's definitely OK to go off on your own and explore other areas.

I really dont have a big interest in Harry Potter either. When i went for the first time i thought Hogsmead and Diagon were cool but i didn't get alot of it, while my fiance was freaking out about all the details. I watched all 8 after that and while i still really don't care for it, i can appreciate the smaller touches now. I would at least watch the first two before you go, that should be all you need.

I think I may have seen part of one of the movies... I haven’t read the books.
